Introduction
If you have ever asked yourself Why Is My Weed Eater not Feeding Line? you are not alone. A string trimmer that refuses to advance line can turn a simple yard chore into a frustrating ordeal. The problem usually stems from one of two feed systems: an automatic feed that relies on centrifugal force, or a bump‑head that requires a tap on the ground. Understanding how each system works, recognizing the most common failure points, and knowing how to fix them will get you back to trimming quickly and safely.
This guide walks you through the mechanics of both feed types, helps you diagnose the exact cause, provides step‑by‑step repair instructions, and offers preventive tips to keep the line flowing season after season. A comparison table highlights the pros and cons of each system, while a FAQ section answers the most frequent follow‑up questions.

How a Weed Eater Line Feed System Works
Before troubleshooting, it helps to know what happens inside the head. Both systems store a length of nylon line on a spool, but they advance it differently.
Auto‑Feed Mechanism
An auto‑feed head uses a spring‑loaded lever or a centrifugal clutch. When the motor spins the head above a certain RPM, the clutch engages and releases a small amount of line. The line is then pulled outward by centrifugal force, feeding itself without any operator input. Most modern auto‑feed heads also have a manual “push‑button” override for quick line release.
Bump‑Head Mechanism
A bump head (also called a “tap‑and‑go” head) relies on a simple mechanical release. The spool is held in place by a friction pad or a spring‑loaded pawl. When you tap the head against the ground, the impact momentarily releases the pawl, allowing the spool to rotate freely and pay out line. The amount of line released per tap is usually adjustable via a set screw.
Both designs depend on a clean, correctly wound spool and a functional spring or clutch. Dirt, worn parts, or improper line size can interrupt the cycle and leave you wondering Why Is My Weed Eater not Feeding Line?
Common Reasons Why Line Won’t Feed
Most feed failures fall into a handful of categories. Identifying the category narrows the repair dramatically.
Auto‑Feed Mechanism Issues
- Worn or broken centrifugal clutch springs.
- Clogged clutch housing with grass debris.
- Incorrect line diameter causing the clutch to slip.
- Broken or missing push‑button override.
Bump‑Head Problems
- Worn pawl or friction pad that no longer grips the spool.
- Spring fatigue – the return spring no longer pushes the pawl back.
- Excessive line tension from over‑winding the spool.
- Debris jammed between the head housing and spool.
Line Spool Problems
- Line wound unevenly or crossed over itself.
- Using line that is too thick or too thin for the head.
- Spool not seated fully on the drive shaft.
Engine or Power Issues
- Low RPM – the centrifugal clutch never engages.
- Clogged air filter or carburetor causing power loss.
- Electric models with a weak battery or faulty motor.
User Error
- Not tapping the bump head firmly enough.
- Holding the trimmer at an angle that prevents line release.
- Forgetting to press the manual feed button on auto‑feed models.
Diagnosing Auto‑Feed Problems
Follow this ordered checklist to pinpoint the fault. Each step includes the reason it matters.
- Inspect the line spool. Remove the head cover and verify the line is wound evenly, the correct diameter, and not tangled. A mis‑wound spool is the most common cause.
- Check the centrifugal clutch. Spin the head by hand; you should feel a slight resistance as the clutch engages. If it spins freely with no click, the clutch springs may be broken.
- Clean the clutch housing. Use compressed air or a soft brush to remove grass clippings. Debris can prevent the clutch from engaging.
- Test the manual feed button. Press the override while the engine runs at low speed. If line feeds, the auto mechanism is at fault; if not, the spool or line may be the issue.
- Verify engine RPM. Run the trimmer at full throttle and listen for the clutch “click.” If the engine struggles, address air filter, spark plug, or fuel issues first.
- Examine the push‑button spring. A missing or weakened spring will not push the line out even when the clutch engages.
If the problem persists after these steps, the head assembly may need replacement.
Diagnosing Bump‑Head Problems
Bump heads are mechanically simpler, but they have their own failure modes. Use this checklist.
- Remove the head cover and inspect the pawl. Look for rounded edges or metal fatigue. A worn pawl cannot grip the spool.
- Check the return spring. Pull the pawl back manually; it should snap forward sharply. A sluggish spring means the pawl won’t re‑engage after a tap.
- Examine the friction pad. Some models use a rubber or felt pad that wears down. Replace if it’s glazed or missing.
- Confirm line tension. Over‑wound line creates excessive drag, preventing the spool from rotating on impact. Unwind a few turns and retest.
- Tap test. With the engine running at operating speed, tap the head firmly on a hard surface. Observe whether line feeds. If it does not, the pawl or spring is likely the culprit.
- Check for debris. Grass, dirt, or small stones lodged between the housing and spool can lock the mechanism.
Once the faulty component is identified, replacement parts are inexpensive and widely available.
Auto‑Feed vs. Bump‑Head Comparison
| Feature | Auto‑Feed | Bump‑Head |
|---|---|---|
| Line advancement | Automatic via centrifugal force | Manual tap on ground |
| User effort | Low – no tapping required | Moderate – periodic taps needed |
| Reliability in thick grass | High – continuous feed | Medium – may need frequent taps |
| Maintenance complexity | Higher – clutch, springs, button | Lower – pawl, spring, pad |
| Typical cost of replacement parts | $15‑$30 | $8‑$20 |
| Best for | Large properties, heavy use | Small yards, occasional trimming |
Choosing the right head for your workload can prevent many feed issues before they start.
Fixing Auto‑Feed Issues
Most auto‑feed repairs are straightforward if you have the right parts.
- Gather tools. You’ll need a socket set (usually 10 mm), a small flat‑head screwdriver, needle‑nose pliers, and replacement springs or clutch kit.
- Remove the head. Unplug the spark plug wire (or disconnect battery) for safety. Loosen the retaining bolt and pull the head off the drive shaft.
- Disassemble the clutch housing. Note the orientation of the clutch shoes and springs. Take a photo for reference.
- Replace worn springs. Install new springs exactly as the originals. Ensure they seat fully in their grooves.
- Clean all components. Use a parts cleaner or warm soapy water, then dry thoroughly. Re‑lubricate the clutch pivot points with a light machine oil.
- Reassemble and test. Reinstall the head, reconnect the spark plug, start the engine, and run at full throttle. Press the manual feed button; line should advance smoothly.
If the clutch housing itself is cracked, replace the entire head assembly.
Fixing Bump‑Head Issues
Bump‑head repairs are usually quicker because fewer parts are involved.
- Safety first. Disconnect power source.
- Remove the head cover. Most models use a single screw or a twist‑lock cap.
- Inspect and replace the pawl. If the pawl teeth are rounded, swap it for a new one. Align the pawl with the spool gear teeth.
- Replace the return spring. Hook the new spring onto the pawl and the housing anchor point. Verify strong snap‑back action.
- Check the friction pad. Peel off the old pad, clean the surface, and press the new pad into place.
- Re‑wind the line correctly. Follow the arrow direction on the spool. Leave a 6‑inch tail for the first feed.
- Reassemble and test. Start the trimmer, let it reach operating speed, and tap the head firmly on concrete. Line should feed 2‑3 inches per tap.
If the spool itself is cracked or the drive shaft is stripped, replace the entire head.
Preventive Maintenance Tips
- Clean after each use. Blow out grass clippings from the head housing to prevent clutch or pawl fouling.
- Use the manufacturer‑specified line diameter. Mismatched line changes tension and feed timing.
- Wind line evenly. Cross‑wound line creates snags that stop feed.
- Lubricate moving parts annually. A drop of light oil on the clutch pivot or pawl pivot extends life.
- Inspect springs each season. Replace any that show corrosion or loss of tension.
- Store the trimmer dry. Moisture accelerates spring fatigue and metal corrosion.
- Check engine RPM regularly. A well‑tuned engine ensures the centrifugal clutch engages at the correct speed.
Consistent maintenance reduces the chance you’ll ever need to ask Why Is My Weed Eater not Feeding Line? again.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over‑tightening the spool. This creates excess drag and can strip the drive shaft.
- Using generic “universal” line. Diameter tolerances vary; stick to OEM specs.
- Ignoring the manual feed button. On auto‑feed models, the button is a diagnostic tool, not just a convenience.
- Tapping the bump head on soft soil. A firm, hard surface is needed for reliable pawl release.
- Running the engine at low throttle. Auto‑feed clutches need full RPM to engage.
- Forgetting to disconnect the spark plug before servicing. Safety first – accidental starts cause serious injury.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my weed eater not feeding line even though the spool looks full?
A full spool does not guarantee feed. The line may be wound incorrectly, the wrong diameter, or the feed mechanism (clutch or pawl) may be worn. Follow the diagnostic steps above to isolate the cause.
Can I convert an auto‑feed head to a bump head?
Most manufacturers design heads as sealed units; conversion kits are rare and often unreliable. It is usually simpler and cheaper to replace the head with the desired type.
What line diameter should I use for my model?
Check the owner’s manual or the label on the head housing. Common sizes are 0.065 in, 0.080 in, and 0.095 in. Using the wrong size is a leading cause of feed failure.
How often should I replace the feed springs or pawl?
Inspect them at the start of each season. Replace any spring that shows rust, deformation, or loss of tension. Pawls typically last 2‑3 years under normal residential use.
My electric trimmer’s line won’t feed. Is the diagnosis different?
The mechanical feed components are identical; the only difference is the power source. Verify the battery is fully charged and the motor reaches rated RPM before troubleshooting the feed mechanism.
Does pressing the manual feed button damage the auto‑feed clutch?
No. The button is designed for occasional manual override. Frequent use may indicate the automatic clutch is failing and should be inspected.
