Understanding Your Stihl Weed Eater
Engine Basics
Most Stihl string trimmers use a two‑stroke gasoline engine that mixes oil with fuel at a 50:1 ratio. The engine relies on a simple carburetor, a magneto ignition system, and a centrifugal clutch that engages the cutting head when the throttle is opened. Because there is no separate oil reservoir, the fuel mixture lubricates the crankcase, piston, and bearings. Understanding this design helps you recognize why clean fuel, a fresh spark plug, and a properly adjusted carburetor are essential for reliable operation.
Common Models
Stihl offers several popular lines, including the FS 40, FS 56, FS 70, and the professional‑grade FS 130 series. While the overall tune‑up process is similar across models, some differences exist in carburetor adjustment screws, air‑filter access, and cutting‑head mounting. Always consult the owner’s manual for model‑specific torque values and adjustment ranges before you begin.
Tools and Materials Needed
Gather the following items before starting the tune‑up. Having everything on hand prevents interruptions and ensures you can complete each step correctly.
- Socket set (typically 10 mm, 13 mm, 17 mm)
- Screwdrivers (Phillips #2 and flat‑head)
- Spark‑plug socket (5/8 in or 16 mm)
- New spark plug (NGK BPMR7A or equivalent)
- Air filter (paper or foam, model‑specific)
- Fuel filter (if equipped)
- Fresh 2‑stroke oil and gasoline (mix 50:1)
- Carburetor adjustment tool (often a small flat‑head or specialized Stihl tool)
- Clean rags, parts‑cleaning solvent, and a small brush
- Torque wrench (optional but recommended for spark‑plug and clutch bolts)
- Protective gloves and safety glasses
Safety Precautions
Before any maintenance, observe these safety rules to protect yourself and the equipment.
- Work in a well‑ventilated area away from open flames or sparks.
- Disconnect the spark‑plug wire and secure it away from the plug to prevent accidental starts.
- Allow the engine to cool completely if it has been running.
- Wear gloves and eye protection when handling solvents or sharp components.
- Dispose of old fuel, oil, and filters according to local hazardous‑waste regulations.
Step‑by‑Step Tune‑Up Procedure
Follow this ordered list to perform a complete tune‑up. Each step includes the why behind the action so you understand the impact on performance.
- Inspect and Clean the Air Filter – Remove the air‑filter cover, take out the filter element, and tap it gently to dislodge loose debris. If the filter is paper, replace it; if foam, wash in warm soapy water, rinse, dry, and lightly oil before reinstalling. A clean filter ensures the correct air‑fuel ratio and prevents dirt from scoring the cylinder.
- Replace the Spark Plug – Using the spark‑plug socket, remove the old plug. Check the gap (typically 0.020 in) with a feeler gauge and adjust if necessary. Install the new plug, hand‑tighten, then torque to the specification in the manual (usually 15–20 Nm). A fresh plug guarantees reliable ignition and smooth idle.
- Check and Adjust the Carburetor – Locate the three adjustment screws: idle speed (T), low‑speed mixture (L), and high‑speed mixture (H). Turn each screw to the factory baseline (usually 1 turn out from seated). Start the engine, let it warm up, then adjust idle speed for a steady 2,800–3,200 rpm. Fine‑tune L and H for smooth acceleration and maximum power without hesitation.
- Examine the Fuel System – Drain any old fuel from the tank and replace the fuel filter if present. Inspect fuel lines for cracks or stiffness; replace any damaged sections. Refill with fresh 50:1 mix. Clean fuel prevents gummed carburetor passages and hard starting.
- Inspect the Cutting Head and Line – Remove the trimmer head, check the spool for wear, and replace the line with the correct diameter (usually .080 in). Verify that the head spins freely and that the bump‑feed mechanism operates. A sharp, properly fed line reduces engine load and improves cutting efficiency.
- Lubricate Moving Parts – Apply a few drops of lightweight machine oil to the throttle cable pivot, clutch bearing, and any exposed pivot points. Avoid over‑lubrication, which can attract dirt. Proper lubrication reduces friction and extends component life.
- Test Run and Fine‑Tune – Reconnect the spark‑plug wire, start the engine, and let it idle. Engage the throttle through its full range, listening for smooth acceleration and steady high‑speed operation. Make minor carburetor tweaks if needed, then shut down and double‑check all fasteners for tightness.

Idle Speed
The idle‑speed screw (often marked “T” or “LA”) controls the throttle plate opening at rest. Turn clockwise to increase idle rpm, counter‑clockwise to decrease. Aim for the rpm range specified in the manual; too low causes stalling, too high wastes fuel and overheats the clutch.
Low‑Speed Mixture
The low‑speed screw (L) enriches or leans the mixture at part throttle. With the engine at idle, turn the screw in small increments (¼ turn) until the engine runs smoothly when you gently squeeze the throttle. A lean setting causes hesitation; a rich setting produces excess smoke and carbon buildup.
High‑Speed Mixture
The high‑speed screw (H) governs the mixture at wide‑open throttle. After the engine is fully warmed, hold the throttle wide open and adjust H for the highest steady rpm without sputtering. Over‑richening reduces power and fouls the plug; over‑leaning can cause overheating and piston damage.

Pro Tips for Longevity
- Run the engine at least once a month during off‑season to keep seals pliable.
- Store the trimmer with a full tank of stabilized fuel to prevent gum formation.
- Use only Stihl‑approved 2‑stroke oil; generic oils can leave deposits.
- Replace the air filter every 25 hours of operation or sooner in dusty conditions.
- Check the spark‑plug gap each season; a widened gap reduces ignition energy.
- Keep the cutting head clean; grass buildup adds drag and overheats the clutch.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced users can slip up. Here are the most frequent errors and how to prevent them.
- Over‑tightening the spark plug – Strips the cylinder head threads. Use a torque wrench.
- Skipping the fuel‑filter replacement – A clogged filter mimics carburetor problems.
- Adjusting the carburetor on a cold engine – Settings drift as the engine warms; always adjust at operating temperature.
- Using the wrong line diameter – Too thick a line stalls the engine; too thin wears quickly.
- Neglecting the clutch inspection – Worn clutch shoes cause slipping and excessive heat.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If the trimmer still behaves poorly after a tune‑up, use this quick reference.
- Hard starting – Verify fresh fuel, correct choke position, and a good spark plug. Check for a flooded engine (remove plug, crank to clear excess fuel).
- Rough idle – Re‑check idle‑speed screw, clean the idle‑jet passage, and ensure the air filter is not restricted.
- Loss of power at high throttle – Inspect the high‑speed mixture screw, fuel line for kinks, and the exhaust screen for carbon blockage.
- Excessive vibration – Confirm the cutting head is balanced, the line is evenly wound, and the engine mounts are tight.
- Smoke at idle – Usually a rich low‑speed mixture; lean the L screw slightly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I tune up my Stihl weed eater?
For typical residential use, a full tune‑up once per season (or every 25‑30 hours of run time) is sufficient. Heavy commercial users should perform the procedure every 15‑20 hours.
Can I use regular gasoline without oil?
No. Stihl two‑stroke engines require a 50:1 gasoline‑to‑oil mixture. Running straight gasoline will cause severe engine damage within minutes.
What spark‑plug gap is correct for my model?
Most Stihl trimmers specify a 0.020 in (0.5 mm) gap. Always verify the exact figure in your owner’s manual before setting the gap.
Why does my trimmer stall when I engage the throttle?
Stalling under load usually indicates a lean low‑speed mixture, a clogged fuel filter, or a dirty carburetor idle circuit. Follow the carburetor adjustment steps and clean the fuel system.
Is it necessary to replace the air filter every tune‑up?
If the filter is paper, replace it each tune‑up. Foam filters can be cleaned and re‑oiled several times, but replace them once they show tears or permanent deformation.
