Understanding Your Sprinkler System

Types of Systems

Most residential installations fall into two categories: spray‑head systems and rotor‑head systems. Spray heads emit a fixed pattern and are ideal for small, rectangular areas. Rotor heads rotate, covering larger circular zones with a slower precipitation rate. Some properties combine both types, using spray heads for flower beds and rotors for open lawn. Knowing which heads you have determines the run time needed for each zone.

Key Components

A typical irrigation network consists of a main water supply line, a backflow preventer, a control valve manifold, zone valves, piping, and the controller (timer). The backflow preventer protects potable water from contamination. Zone valves open and close individual circuits, allowing the controller to schedule watering for specific areas. Familiarity with these parts makes troubleshooting faster and start‑up smoother.

Preparing for Start‑Up

Inspecting the System

Before introducing water, walk the property and visually inspect every visible component. Look for cracked pipes, broken heads, missing caps, and signs of rodent damage. Verify that all valve boxes are securely closed and that the backflow preventer test cocks are accessible. Replace any damaged heads or fittings now; doing so after the system is pressurized can cause leaks that are harder to locate.

Checking Water Supply

Confirm that the main shut‑off valve for the irrigation line is fully open. If your system draws from a municipal source, ensure the water meter indicates flow. For well‑fed systems, check that the pump is operational and the pressure tank reads within the manufacturer’s recommended range (typically 40–60 psi). Low pressure will cause poor coverage, while excessive pressure can rupture fittings.

Step‑by‑Step Guide to Turn On a Sprinkler System

1. Close all manual drain valves. These are usually located at the lowest points of each zone. Closing them prevents water from escaping during pressurization.
2. Open the main irrigation shut‑off valve slowly. A gradual opening reduces water hammer, which can damage pipes and valves.
3. Activate the backflow preventer test cocks. Open the test cocks briefly to purge air, then close them. This step ensures the preventer is functioning and removes trapped air that could cause erratic head performance.
4. Power on the controller. Verify the display lights up and the date/time are correct. An incorrect clock will shift all scheduled start times.
5. Run a manual “test all zones” cycle. Most controllers have a “manual run” or “test” mode that cycles through each zone for a short period (usually 1–2 minutes). Observe each zone as it runs.
6. Check each sprinkler head for proper operation. Look for full rotation (rotors), consistent spray pattern (sprays), and absence of misting or sputtering. Adjust any heads that are misaligned or clogged.
7. Verify pressure at the farthest head. Use a pressure gauge on a test port or a hose bib near the last zone. Pressure should match the design specification (typically 30–45 psi for spray heads, 45–60 psi for rotors).
8. Inspect valve boxes for leaks. After the test cycle, open each valve box and look for water seeping around solenoids or fittings. Tighten connections if needed.
9. Set the seasonal schedule. Program start times, run durations, and days per week based on current weather, soil type, and plant requirements. Many modern controllers allow “smart” adjustments using weather data.
10. Document the start‑up. Record the date, pressure readings, any adjustments made, and the programmed schedule. This log simplifies future maintenance and helps identify trends.

Programming the Controller

Setting Start Times

Choose early‑morning start times (between 4 am and 8 am) to minimize evaporation and wind drift. If local ordinances restrict watering windows, program the earliest permissible slot. Stagger start times for multiple zones to avoid exceeding the supply flow rate. (See Also:How To Clean Sprinkler Valve)

Adjusting Run Times

Run time depends on head type, soil, and slope. A general rule: spray heads need 10–15 minutes per cycle, rotors 20–30 minutes. Use the “catch‑can test” — place empty cans in the zone, run the zone for a set period, measure water depth, and calculate the precipitation rate. Adjust run times until you achieve 0.5–0.75 inches per watering event.

Testing Each Zone

After programming, run each zone individually for its full scheduled duration. Walk the zone and confirm uniform coverage. Look for dry spots, overspray onto hardscapes, and heads that fail to pop up. Make note of any heads that need cleaning, replacement, or arc adjustment. Repeat the test after any modifications to verify the fix.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Opening the main valve too quickly. Causes water hammer and can burst fittings.
• Skipping the backflow preventer purge. Trapped air leads to uneven pressure and head sputtering.
• Programming all zones to start simultaneously. Exceeds supply capacity, resulting in low pressure across the system.
• Ignoring seasonal adjustments. Fixed schedules waste water in cool months and under‑water in heat waves.
• Neglecting to document changes. Makes future troubleshooting guesswork.

Tips and Best Practices

• Install a rain sensor or connect the controller to a weather service to automatically skip cycles after rainfall.
• Perform a full system audit at least twice a year — spring start‑up and fall winterization.
• Use pressure‑regulating heads on zones with high static pressure to prevent misting and extend head life.
• Group plants with similar water needs into the same zone (hydrozoning) to improve efficiency.
• Keep a spare set of common replacement parts (nozzles, seals, solenoids) in the valve box for quick repairs.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If a zone fails to activate, first verify that the controller shows the zone as “on.” Check the corresponding valve solenoid for a clicking sound; absence of a click suggests a wiring fault or a bad solenoid. Use a multimeter to confirm 24 VAC at the valve wires. For low pressure across all zones, inspect the main line for a partially closed gate valve or a clogged filter screen on the backflow preventer. Individual heads that sputter often have debris in the nozzle; remove the head, flush the nozzle, and reinstall. Persistent leaks at valve boxes usually indicate a worn diaphragm — replace the valve internals rather than tightening the bonnet repeatedly.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start my sprinkler system in spring?

Begin start‑up after the last hard freeze and when nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 40 °F. In most temperate regions this occurs between late March and early May. Starting too early risks freeze damage to pipes and heads.

How do I know if my backflow preventer is working?

During start‑up, open the test cocks on the preventer. Water should flow freely from each cock when the system is pressurized. If no water appears, the device may be stuck closed or installed incorrectly. Annual professional testing is recommended and often required by code. (See Also:Which Of The Following Sprinkler Heads)

Can I turn on the system without a controller?

Yes. You can manually open each zone valve using the manual bleed lever on the valve body. This is useful for testing or for properties without a timer. However, manual operation lacks scheduling convenience and is not practical for daily irrigation.

What is the ideal water pressure for residential sprinklers?

Spray heads perform best at 30–45 psi, while rotor heads prefer 45–60 psi. Pressures above 80 psi can cause misting and premature wear; pressures below 20 psi result in poor coverage. Install a pressure regulator if your supply exceeds the recommended range.

How often should I inspect my sprinkler heads?

Inspect heads at least once per month during the watering season. Look for clogged nozzles, misaligned arcs, and physical damage. A quick visual check while the zone runs catches most problems before they affect lawn health.
