Why Knowing How to Thread a Craftsman Weed Eater Spool Matters

Many Craftsman weed eater owners assume that rethreading the spool is a difficult, expensive task, so they throw away their tool or buy costly pre-wound replacement spools when the line runs out. Learning how to thread a Craftsman weed eater spool is a simple, cost-effective skill that saves you money and keeps your tool running at its best. Pre-wound replacement spools cost $4 to $8 each, while a $2 to $3 roll of trimmer line can be used to rethread your spool 10 or more times, saving you hundreds of dollars over the life of your tool. Rethreading also lets you choose the exact line type and thickness for your yard, whether you’re cutting thick overgrown weeds or maintaining a neat lawn. The entire process takes just 5 to 10 minutes, requires no special tools or mechanical experience, and is easy enough for even first-time DIYers to master.

Understanding Your Craftsman Weed Eater Spool Components

Before you thread your spool, it’s helpful to understand the two main types of Craftsman spools and the line specifications for your model. Identifying your spool type and the correct line size will prevent jams and ensure smooth operation.

Common Craftsman Spool Types (Bump Feed vs. Fixed Line)

Most Craftsman weed eaters use one of two spool designs:

• Bump feed spools: The most common type for residential models, these have a spring-loaded mechanism that releases more line when you tap the bottom of the weed eater on the ground. They’re ideal for long trimming sessions, as you don’t have to stop to manually adjust the line.
• Fixed line spools: These spools have no bump mechanism. You advance the line manually by turning a knob on the side of the head or pulling it out by hand. They’re simpler, with fewer moving parts that can break, making them a good choice for light, occasional use.

You can find your spool type printed on the weed eater housing, or confirm it in your owner’s manual.

Correct Line Size and Type for Your Model

The correct line diameter for your Craftsman weed eater is almost always printed on the side of your existing spool, or listed in your owner’s manual. Most residential models use .065 inch line for light grass trimming, or .080 inch line for thicker weeds and brush. You can choose between round line (easier to wind, better for grass) and square line (sharper edges, better for thick weeds, but stiffer and harder to wind).

Tools and Materials You’ll Need for Spool Winding

While you don’t need any specialized tools to thread a Craftsman weed eater spool, having the right items on hand will make the process faster and easier. You will need:

• Replacement trimmer line: Match the size and type (round or square) recommended for your model, as noted on your old spool or in your owner’s manual.
• Scissors or line cutter: For cutting the line to the correct length with a clean, straight edge to prevent snags.
• Flat-head screwdriver (optional): For prying off stubborn spool caps that are stuck due to built-up grass or dirt.
• Clean rag: For wiping out grass, dirt, and debris from the spool housing before installing the new spool, to prevent line feed blockages.
• Work gloves (optional): For protecting your hands from sharp edges on the trimmer line while you handle it.

Step-by-Step Guide to Thread a Craftsman Weed Eater Spool

The threading process varies slightly depending on whether you have a bump feed or fixed line spool. Follow the steps below for your specific spool type to ensure a smooth, jam-free wind.

Threading a Bump Feed Spool

Bump feed spools are the most common type on residential Craftsman weed eaters, and they release line automatically when you tap the bottom of the tool on the ground. Follow these steps to thread this spool type correctly:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental startup while you work. Tuck the rubber boot away from the plug to avoid contact.
2. Twist the spool cap counterclockwise to remove it. If it’s stuck due to built-up debris, gently pry it loose with a flat-head screwdriver, taking care not to crack the plastic.
3. Pull the old spool straight out of the housing, and discard any remaining line. Wipe out any grass, dirt, or debris from the inside of the housing with a clean rag to prevent line feed blockages.
4. Cut 10 to 12 feet of .065 or .080 inch trimmer line (match the size printed on your old spool) with scissors or a line cutter for a clean edge.
5. Locate the small arrow printed on the top or side of the spool, which indicates the correct winding direction (almost always clockwise). Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole in the center of the spool, and pull it through until 2 to 3 inches stick out the opposite side.
6. Wind the line tightly around the spool, following the arrow direction. Keep constant tension on the line as you wind to avoid loose layers, and do not overlap lines, as this will make the spool too thick to fit in the housing.
7. Once all line is wound, leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out from the winding. Tuck the remaining end of the line into the small notch on the spool rim or back into the anchor hole to secure it.
8. Align the spool with the guide eyelet in the housing, and push it straight in until it clicks into place. Make sure the end of the line is threaded through the eyelet so it can feed out correctly.
9. Twist the spool cap clockwise to tighten it, being careful not to cross-thread the plastic.
10. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the plug, then test the line by tapping the bottom of the weed eater on the ground 2 to 3 times. If 4 to 6 inches of line extends from the head, you’ve threaded the spool correctly.

Threading a Fixed Line Spool

Fixed line spools do not have a bump mechanism, so you advance line manually by turning a knob or pulling it out by hand. The threading process is nearly identical to bump feed spools, with one small adjustment for the line feed path:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire for safety, then remove the spool cap and old spool, wiping out any debris from the housing.
2. Cut 10 to 12 feet of the correct size trimmer line for your model.
3. Locate the winding direction arrow on the spool, insert one end of the line into the anchor hole, and pull 2 to 3 inches through the opposite side.
4. Wind the line tightly around the spool, following the arrow direction, with no overlapping layers. Keep tension on the line as you wind to ensure an even spool.
5. Leave 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out, and tuck the end into the notch on the spool rim or anchor hole to secure it.
6. Thread the end of the line through the guide hole on the spool housing (fixed line spools use a separate guide path instead of an eyelet).
7. Install the spool back into the housing, replace the cap, and tighten it clockwise.
8. Reconnect the spark plug wire, then test by manually pulling the line out to advance it. If it feeds out smoothly, the spool is threaded correctly.

Proper Spool Wind Techniques to Avoid Jams

Proper winding is the difference between a spool that feeds smoothly for months and one that jams after a single use. Follow these best practices for a perfect wind every time:

• Keep constant tension on the line as you wind: Hold the line taut with your non-dominant hand while turning the spool with your dominant hand to avoid loose layers that cause tangles.
• Follow the arrow on the spool: Winding in the opposite direction will cause the line to unravel as soon as you start trimming, as the rotation of the weed eater head pulls the line loose.
• Avoid overlapping lines: Wind each layer directly next to the previous one to keep the spool even and thin enough to fit in the housing.
• Leave 6 to 8 inches of excess line: This gives the line enough slack to reach the guide eyelet and feed out smoothly. If you leave too little, the line won’t advance at all.
• Wind square line slowly: Square trimmer line is stiffer than round line, so wind it more carefully to ensure it lays flat and doesn’t catch on itself.

Bump Feed vs. Fixed Line Spools: Key Comparison

Choosing between a bump feed and fixed line spool depends on your specific needs and how often you use your weed eater. The table below breaks down the key differences between the two designs to help you decide which is right for you, and what to expect when rethreading each type.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Threading Your Spool

Even experienced DIYers make errors when rethreading a Craftsman weed eater spool, but these mistakes are easy to avoid with a little preparation:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: Ignoring the arrow on the spool will cause the line to unravel mid-use. Always follow the marked direction, and test the line after threading to confirm it feeds correctly.
• Overlapping lines while winding: This creates an overfilled, uneven spool that jams easily. Keep tension on the line and wind each layer next to the previous one with no overlap.
• Not leaving enough excess line: If you only leave 1 to 2 inches of line sticking out, it won’t reach the guide eyelet to feed out. Always leave 6 to 8 inches of excess before tucking the end.
• Using the wrong line size: Line that’s too thick will jam the spool, while line that’s too thin will break constantly. Check your owner’s manual or the label on your old spool for the correct diameter.
• Skipping the housing cleaning step: Trapped grass and dirt block the line feed, causing jams even if the spool is threaded perfectly. Wipe out the housing with a rag before installing the new spool.
• Forgetting to disconnect the spark plug: This creates a serious risk of accidental startup and injury. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before touching the spool or engine.

Maintenance Tips to Extend Spool and Line Life

Proper care of your Craftsman weed eater spool and line will reduce how often you need to rethread and extend the life of your tool. Follow these simple tips:

• Store spare trimmer line in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV rays and moisture make line brittle, causing it to break easily during use.
• Wipe down the spool and inside of the housing after each use to remove grass sap and debris that can cause jams.
• Inspect your line regularly for fraying or wear, and replace damaged line immediately to avoid poor cutting performance and mid-use breakage.
• Do not overfill the spool: leave a 1/8 inch gap between the top of the wound line and the spool rim to prevent jams.
• Use climate-appropriate line: heat-resistant line works best in hot areas to prevent melting, while cold-resistant line stays flexible in cold climates to avoid breaking.

Troubleshooting Common Post-Threading Issues

If you run into problems after threading your spool, these quick fixes will get your weed eater working again in minutes:

• Line won’t advance: Confirm the line is wound in the correct direction, there’s at least 6 inches of excess line sticking out, and the line isn’t stuck in the guide eyelet. Clear any debris blocking the feed path.
• Line jams constantly: Check for overlapping lines while winding, confirm the spool is installed correctly, and verify you’re using the right line size for your model.
• Line breaks frequently: Inspect the line for fraying or wear, and replace it if damaged. If your model has a cutting blade on the head, sharpen or replace it if it’s dull, as a dull blade won’t cut the line to the correct length as it advances.
• Line feeds out too much or too little: Adjust the line advance mechanism: turn the adjustment knob clockwise to reduce feed, or counterclockwise to increase it, until you get the desired length.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to rethread my Craftsman weed eater spool?

Rethreading frequency depends on your usage and the weeds you cut. For light use (trimming grass once a week), rethread every 2 to 3 months. For heavy use (thick weeds, large yards, 2+ times a week), rethread every 4 to 6 weeks. If the line is frayed, worn, or not advancing properly, rethread regardless of your usual timeline.

Can I use any type of trimmer line for my Craftsman spool?

No, always use the line size and type recommended in your owner’s manual. Most residential Craftsman models use .065 or .080 inch round or square line. Line that’s too thick will jam the spool or strain the motor, while line that’s too thin will break easily and cut poorly. Check your old spool label or manual for the correct specifications for your model.

Why is my line unraveling from the spool after I thread it?

Unraveling is almost always caused by winding the line in the wrong direction. Every Craftsman spool has a marked arrow showing the correct winding direction (usually clockwise). Winding counter to the arrow will cause the line to come loose as soon as you start trimming. Loose winding or overlapping lines can also cause unraveling, so keep tension on the line as you wind and avoid overlapping layers. Make sure the end of the line is tucked securely into the anchor hole or notch on the spool rim.

Do I need to replace the entire spool when the line runs out?

No, rethreading your existing spool is far more cost-effective than buying pre-wound replacements. A $2 to $3 roll of trimmer line can rethread your spool 10 or more times, while pre-wound spools cost $4 to $8 each. Only replace the entire spool if it’s cracked, broken, or the anchor hole is worn out.

How much trimmer line do I need to wind onto a Craftsman spool?

Most Craftsman spools hold 10 to 12 feet of .065 inch line, or 8 to 10 feet of .080 inch line. Cut a piece 1 to 2 feet longer than the recommended amount to account for the end you’ll tuck into the anchor hole and excess for feeding. Overfilling the spool will cause jams, while underfilling it will mean more frequent rethreading.

Can I wind the line onto the spool by hand, or do I need a special tool?

You can wind the line by hand with no special tools required. All you need are scissors to cut the line to length, and optionally a flat-head screwdriver to remove a stuck spool cap. Aftermarket manual winding tools are available, but they’re not necessary for most users. As long as you keep tension on the line as you wind, you’ll get a tight, even spool that won’t jam.

Conclusion

Learning how to thread a Craftsman weed eater spool is one of the easiest and most cost-effective skills you can learn as a Craftsman tool owner.
