Understanding Poulan Pro Weed Eater Trimmer Lines

Before diving into the restringing process, it’s helpful to understand how Poulan Pro trimmer lines work and what options are available for your Pro Series model. Poulan Pro weed eaters use a rotating trimmer head that spins at high speeds to cut vegetation, with the trimmer line extending from the head to make contact with plants. The high-speed rotation creates a rigid cutting blade effect, allowing the flexible line to slice through grass, weeds, and even small woody stems without breaking. Most Pro Series models use a bump-feed or automatic-feed trimmer head, which releases more line when you tap the head on the ground (bump-feed) or automatically as the line wears down (auto-feed), eliminating the need to manually adjust line length during use.

How Poulan Pro Trimmer Heads Work

Poulan Pro Pro Series trimmers typically come equipped with a dual-line or single-line trimmer head, depending on the model. Dual-line heads use two pieces of trimmer line, which provide faster cutting and better balance for heavy-duty use, while single-line heads are lighter and ideal for smaller yards or light trimming tasks. The line is wound onto a removable spool inside the trimmer head, which holds the line in place and feeds it out as needed during use. When the line wears down to a short length, you’ll need to restring the head to restore full cutting length and efficiency. Most Pro Series spools are designed for easy removal and replacement, so you don’t need special tools to access the spool in most cases.

Types of Trimmer Lines Compatible with Pro Series

Not all trimmer lines work with Poulan Pro Pro Series models, so it’s important to use line that matches your trimmer’s specifications. Most Pro Series trimmers accept line with a diameter between 0.080 and 0.095 inches, though some heavy-duty models can handle up to 0.105-inch line. Using line that’s too thick can overload the trimmer’s motor, causing it to overheat or wear out prematurely, while line that’s too thin will break frequently and wear down quickly, requiring more frequent restringing. We’ll cover line selection in more detail later in this guide to help you choose the best option for your needs.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Having all the right supplies on hand before you start the restringing process will save you time and frustration. Here’s everything you’ll need to string your Poulan Pro weed eater correctly:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length for your model)
• Scissors or line trimmer cutting tool (some Poulan Pro Pro Series models have a built-in line cutter on the trimmer head, so you may not need a separate tool)
• Flathead screwdriver (for removing the trimmer head cover, if your model uses a screw-in retention nut)
• Clean rag (to wipe down the trimmer head and remove debris)
• Work gloves (to protect your hands from sharp line edges)
• Optional: lightweight lubricant for the trimmer head spindle

Most of these tools are likely already in your garage, and replacement trimmer line is inexpensive and available at any hardware store, home improvement center, or online retailer that sells lawn care supplies. Make sure to check your Poulan Pro owner’s manual for the exact line diameter and length recommended for your specific model, as using the wrong line can cause poor performance or damage to your trimmer. For most Pro Series models, you’ll need between 10 and 15 feet of line for single-line heads, and 20 to 30 feet total for dual-line heads.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

Working with a weed eater requires basic safety precautions to avoid injury, even when you’re just restringing the head. Follow these steps before you begin to stay safe:

1. Disconnect the power source: For gas-powered Poulan Pro Pro Series models, locate the spark plug on the side of the engine and pull the boot off the plug to disable the engine. This prevents the trimmer from accidentally starting while you’re working on it. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you start to avoid burns from hot engine parts. For corded or battery-powered models, remove the battery or unplug the trimmer from the power source.
2. Wear protective gear: Put on work gloves to protect your hands from sharp trimmer line edges, and safety glasses if you’re working in a dusty or debris-filled area.
3. Place the trimmer on a flat surface: Set your weed eater on a workbench or the ground in a well-lit area so you can easily access the trimmer head without straining.
4. Clear debris from the trimmer head: Use a clean rag to wipe away any grass, dirt, or built-up gunk from the trimmer head and spool area. This makes it easier to remove the spool and prevents dirt from getting inside the head during reassembly.

Taking these simple precautions will reduce your risk of injury and make the restringing process go smoothly.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to String Poulan Pro Weed Eater

Now that you have your tools and have taken safety precautions, follow these step-by-step instructions to restring your Poulan Pro Pro Series weed eater. This process works for most bump-feed and auto-feed Pro Series trimmer heads, but always refer to your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.

Step 1: Prep the Trimmer Head

Start by turning the trimmer head upside down so the bottom of the head is facing up. Locate the spool retention nut or cap in the center of the head – this is the small plastic or metal piece that holds the spool in place. For most Pro Series models, you can remove this nut by turning it counterclockwise by hand, or with a flathead screwdriver if it’s tightened securely. Some newer Pro Series models have a quick-release button on the side of the head that you press to release the spool without removing a nut. Set the nut or cap aside in a safe place so you don’t lose it during the process.

Step 2: Remove the Old Spool and Line

Once the retention nut or cap is removed, pull the old spool straight out of the trimmer head. If the spool is stuck, gently wiggle it back and forth to loosen it without damaging the head or spindle. You can also tap it gently with a rubber mallet to loosen it, but avoid using a metal hammer which can damage the spool or trimmer head. Once the spool is removed, pull off any remaining old trimmer line and discard it. Take a moment to inspect the inside of the trimmer head for any built-up debris, and wipe it clean with your rag if needed. Check the spindle (the central post that the spool rotates around) for any signs of damage or wear, and apply a small amount of lubricant if it looks dry. If the old line was frayed or had multiple cuts, that’s a sign you may have been hitting rocks or debris while trimming, or using line that’s too thin for your typical use case.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the New Trimmer Line

Most Poulan Pro Pro Series spools require between 10 and 15 feet of trimmer line, depending on the model and line diameter. Check your owner’s manual for the exact length recommended for your trimmer. Cut the line to the correct length using your scissors or line trimmer cutter, then cut the line in half if you’re using a dual-line trimmer head (you’ll need two equal lengths of line, one for each side of the spool). Make sure both pieces are exactly the same length, as uneven lines will cause the trimmer to vibrate excessively and cut unevenly. If you’re using star or twisted line, cut the ends straight to ensure they feed properly through the trimmer head holes.

To make the restringing process easier, you can burn or melt the cut ends of the line slightly with a lighter (if the line is nylon) to prevent fraying. Be careful not to melt the line too much, as this can create a lump that won’t feed properly through the trimmer head. Let the melted ends cool completely before handling them.

Step 4: Load the Line Onto the Spool

This is the most critical step in the process, as loading the line incorrectly will cause feeding issues later. Follow these guidelines for your specific trimmer head type:

For bump-feed dual-line heads:

1. Insert one end of the first line into the small hole on the side of the spool, leaving about 2 inches of line extending from the hole to hold it in place.
2. Wind the line tightly onto the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the top of the spool (almost all Poulan Pro spools have a directional arrow to show which way to wind the line). Winding in the wrong direction will cause the line to tangle and not feed properly.
3. Leave about 6 inches of line extending from the spool once you’ve wound the full length, then insert the end of the line into the small notch on the edge of the spool to hold it in place.
4. Repeat the process with the second piece of line on the opposite side of the spool, making sure both lines are wound tightly and evenly, with no loose loops, tangles, or overlapping layers.

For auto-feed single-line heads:

1. Insert one end of the line into the central hole in the spool, leaving about 2 inches extending from the hole.
2. Wind the line tightly onto the spool in the direction of the arrow on the top of the spool.
3. Leave about 6 inches of line extending from the spool, then insert the end into the small notch on the edge of the spool to secure it.

Make sure the line is wound tightly and evenly, with no gaps or loose sections, as loose line will tangle inside the trimmer head and cause feeding problems. Avoid twisting the two lines around each other when loading a dual-line spool, as this will cause tangles during use.

Step 5: Reassemble the Trimmer Head

Once the line is loaded onto the spool, align the spool with the spindle in the trimmer head, making sure the notches on the spool line up with the tabs on the head. Push the spool straight down onto the spindle until it clicks into place. Replace the retention nut or cap, turning it clockwise by hand to tighten it. Don’t over-tighten the nut, as this can make it difficult to remove the spool the next time you need to restring the trimmer, and can even strip the threads on the spindle. After reassembling, pull gently on both ends of the line to make sure they’re seated properly in the feed holes and not caught under the spool.

Step 6: Test the New Line

Before you take the trimmer out to cut grass, test it to make sure the line feeds correctly. Reconnect the spark plug (for gas models) or reinsert the battery/plug in the trimmer. Turn the trimmer on and let it run for a few seconds, then tap the trimmer head on the ground (for bump-feed models) to see if the line extends properly. For auto-feed models, run the trimmer near some tall grass to see if the line extends automatically as it wears down. If the line doesn’t feed, turn off the trimmer, disconnect the power source, and check that the line is wound in the correct direction and that the spool is seated properly in the head. You may also need to adjust the line feed knob on the side of the trimmer head to increase the amount of line released per tap for bump-feed models.

Pro Series Specific Considerations

Poulan Pro Pro Series trimmers have a few unique features that set them apart from standard Poulan Pro models, and restringing them requires a few extra considerations. Most Pro Series models come with a high-capacity, durable trimmer head designed for heavy-duty use, which can hold more line than standard heads, reducing how often you need to restring. Many Pro Series models also feature a quick-release spool system, which makes removing and replacing the spool much faster than older models that require tools to remove the retention nut.

Some high-end Pro Series models also have a dual-blade cutting system, which uses three or four pieces of line instead of the standard two, so you’ll need to load multiple equal lengths of line onto the spool depending on the model. Always refer to your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions, as the restringing process can vary slightly between different Pro Series trimmer models. For example, the Poulan Pro 25cc gas trimmer uses a standard dual-line bump-feed head, while the Poulan Pro 40cc cordless model uses a high-capacity auto-feed head with a larger spool that holds up to 20 feet of 0.095-inch line.

Choosing the Right Trimmer Line for Your Poulan Pro

Using the right trimmer line is essential for getting the best performance out of your Poulan Pro Pro Series weed eater. The wrong line can break frequently, wear down quickly, or even damage your trimmer’s motor. Here’s a comparison of the most common trimmer line types and their suitability for Pro Series models:

For most homeowners, 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch square or star line is the best choice for Poulan Pro Pro Series trimmers, as it balances durability, cutting efficiency, and compatibility. If you frequently tackle thick brush or commercial landscaping jobs, opt for twisted line or polymer-coated line for maximum performance and longevity. Avoid cheap, low-quality line, as it will fray and break easily, leading to more frequent restringing and potential damage to your trimmer head.

Tips for Optimal Performance and Longevity

Follow these best practices to keep your Poulan Pro weed eater running smoothly and extend the life of your trimmer line and head:

• Wind the line tightly: When loading the line onto the spool, wind it as tightly as possible to prevent tangles and ensure smooth feeding. Loose line is the most common cause of feeding issues and line breakage.
• Use the correct line length: Don’t overload the spool with too much line, as this can cause tangles and make it difficult for the line to feed properly. Stick to the length recommended in your owner’s manual.
• Store extra line in a cool, dry place: Nylon trimmer line can become brittle if exposed to extreme temperatures or sunlight for long periods, so store your extra line in a sealed container in a cool, dry area to prevent it from breaking easily.
• Clean the trimmer head regularly: After each use, wipe down the trimmer head and spool to remove grass, dirt, and debris. Built-up gunk can cause the spool to stick and prevent the line from feeding properly.
• Don’t over-tighten the retention nut: Tighten the nut just enough to hold the spool in place, but don’t force it. Over-tightening can strip the threads or make it impossible to remove the spool when you need to restring it later.
• Avoid cutting near hard surfaces: Hitting rocks, concrete, or other hard surfaces with your trimmer line will fray and break it quickly, so try to keep a safe distance from hardscaping when trimming.
• Remove line for long-term storage: If you’re storing your trimmer for the winter or an extended period, remove the line from the spool to prevent it from becoming brittle and breaking when you use it again.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Stringing Your Poulan Pro

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when restringing a weed eater, but avoiding these common errors will save you time and frustration:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: Almost all Poulan Pro spools have an arrow on the top indicating the correct winding direction. Winding the line backwards will cause it to tangle and not feed properly, so always check the arrow before you start winding.
• Using the wrong line diameter: Line that’s too thick will overload your trimmer’s motor, while line that’s too thin will break frequently. Always check your owner’s manual for the correct line diameter for your model.
• Overloading the spool: Putting too much line on the spool can cause tangles and feeding issues. Stick to the recommended line length for your model, and don’t try to cram extra line onto the spool.
• Skipping the safety step of disconnecting the power source: Accidentally starting the trimmer while you’re working on it can cause serious injury. Always disconnect the spark plug, battery, or power cord before you start restringing.
• Not securing the line ends: Failing to tuck the ends of the line into the notches on the spool can cause the line to come loose while you’re winding, leading to tangles. Always secure the ends of the line before you finish winding.
• Misaligning the spool during reassembly: If the notches on the spool don’t line up with the tabs on the trimmer head, the spool will spin loosely and won’t feed line properly. Make sure the spool clicks into place before tightening the retention nut.

Troubleshooting Guide for Common Issues

If you’ve restringed your Poulan Pro weed eater and are experiencing issues, here are solutions to the most common problems:

• Line won’t feed: Check that the line is wound in the correct direction, that the spool is seated properly in the trimmer head, and that the retention nut is tightened (but not over-tightened). If the line is tangled on the spool, remove it and rewind it tightly. Also check that the line is not caught in the feed holes of the trimmer head.
• Line breaks frequently: This is usually caused by using line that’s too thin, winding the line too loosely, or using the trimmer on thick vegetation that’s too tough for your line diameter. Switch to a heavier-duty line, wind the line tighter, or avoid cutting very thick brush with your trimmer.
• Line feeds too much or too little: For bump-feed models, adjust the line feed knob on the trimmer head to control how much line is released when you tap the head. For auto-feed models, check that the line is the correct diameter and that the spool is seated properly.
• Trimmer head vibrates excessively: This is usually caused by an unbalanced spool, which happens when the line is wound unevenly or the two lines on a dual-line head are different lengths. Remove the spool and rewind the line evenly, making sure both lines are the same length. If vibration persists, check that the spool is not rubbing against the side of the trimmer head.
• Trimmer head won’t spin after reassembly: Check that the retention nut is tightened properly and that the spool is not rubbing against the side of the trimmer head. If the head still won’t spin, there may be debris stuck in the spindle, so remove the spool and clean the spindle thoroughly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to restring my Poulan Pro weed eater?

The frequency of restringing depends on how often you use your trimmer and what type of vegetation you’re cutting. For light residential use (trimming grass and small weeds a few times a month), you’ll need to restring your trimmer every 2-4 weeks. For heavy-duty use (cutting thick brush or commercial landscaping), you may need to restring it every 1-2 weeks. Using a heavier-duty line like square or star line will extend the time between restringing by 2-3 times compared to standard round line.

Can I use third-party trimmer line on my Poulan Pro Pro Series?

Yes, you can use third-party trimmer line as long as it matches the diameter specifications for your model. Poulan Pro does not require you to use their branded line, but make sure the line is high-quality nylon or polymer to avoid breakage and poor performance. Avoid cheap, low-quality line, as it will fray and break easily, leading to more frequent restringing and potential damage to your trimmer head.

What should I do if my line keeps tangling inside the trimmer head?

Tangling is almost always caused by winding the line too loosely, using the wrong line diameter, or overloading the spool. Remove the spool, discard the tangled line, and rewind the new line tightly in the correct direction, making sure not to overload the spool. If tangling persists, check that the spool is seated properly in the trimmer head and that there’s no debris inside the head causing the line to catch.

Is it okay to use longer trimmer line than recommended?

No, you should never use more line than the recommended length for your model. Overloading the spool with extra line will cause tangles, feeding issues, and can even damage the trimmer’s motor by putting extra strain on it. Stick to the length specified in your owner’s manual for best performance.

How do I know if my trimmer line is worn out?

You’ll know it’s time to restring your trimmer when the line is shorter than 3-4 inches, frayed, split, or broken in multiple places. If the line is wearing down faster than usual, you may be using the wrong line diameter for your model, or you may be cutting vegetation that’s too tough for your line. Switching to a heavier-duty line can extend the life of your line between restringing.

Can I restring my Poulan Pro weed eater without removing the trimmer head?

Most Poulan Pro Pro Series models require you to remove the trimmer head to access the spool, but some newer models have a quick-release spool system that lets you remove the spool without taking off the entire head. Check your owner’s manual to see if your model has this feature. Even if you don’t need to remove the entire head, you’ll still need to remove the retention nut or cap to access the spool.
