Why Proper Stringing Matters
The trim line is the working component that actually cuts grass and weeds. When it is worn, frayed, or tangled, your Bolens weed eater loses cutting power and becomes harder to control. Proper stringing ensures even line feed, reduces vibration, and prevents the motor from straining. Taking the time to install the line correctly also extends the life of the trimmer head and avoids frequent replacements.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
Before you begin, gather the following items:
- A clean workbench or flat surface
- Gloves to protect your hands
- A small flathead screwdriver
- A pair of needle-nose pliers
- The correct replacement string for your model
- Your Bolens owner’s manual (if available)
Identifying Your Bolens Model Type
Bolens produces several styles of weed eaters, including corded electric, cordless battery, and gas-powered models. Each may use a slightly different trimmer head design. Locate the model number on the motor housing or along the shaft. Common series include the Bolens BL100, BL200, and BL400 families. If you still have the original packaging or manual, check the specifications section for the recommended string gauge and spool dimensions.
Preparing Your Weed Eater for Stringing
- Disconnect the power source. For corded models, unplug the unit. For cordless models, remove the battery pack. For gas models, turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire.
- Place the unit on a stable surface. Lay it on a towel or workbench so it does not roll or tip.
- Wear gloves. The plastic housing can have sharp edges, and old string may be frayed.
Removing the Old String
Most Bolens trimmer heads have a release button or tab that allows the spool to be removed. Press the release mechanism while gently pulling the trimmer head upward. If the old string is tightly wound, use needle-nose pliers to grip the end and unwind it. Clear away any debris, dirt, or broken pieces of old line from inside the head before installing the new string.
Choosing the Right Replacement String
Using the wrong gauge or material can cause poor line feed or premature wear. Check your manual for the exact specifications. Most Bolens models use either 0.065 inch or 0.080 inch diameter nylon line. Some heavy-duty gas models may require 0.095 inch line. Always match the manufacturer’s recommendation to avoid damage to the trimmer head or motor.
Comparison of Common String Types
| String Type | Diameter | Best For | Durability | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Nylon | 0.065–0.080 in | Light trimming, edging | Moderate | Low |
| Heavy-Duty Nylon | 0.095 in | Thick grass, weeds | High | Medium |
| Polyester Blend | 0.080 in | All-purpose use | High | Medium |
| Copper-Coated | 0.080 in | Heavy-duty cutting | Very High | High |
Loading the Spool with New String
- Cut a length of new string. Measure approximately 6 to 8 feet for most models. If your spool holds two lines, cut double that length.
- Find the anchor hole. Look for a small hole or slot in the center hub of the spool.
- Insert the string. Push one end of the string through the anchor hole and pull it through until about 2 inches remain inside.
- Begin winding. Hold the loose end and rotate the spool clockwise, keeping steady tension. Wind neatly in even layers, following the direction indicated on the spool.
- Leave a tail. When you reach the end, leave 4 to 6 inches of string unwound so it can feed out during operation.
Understanding Wind Direction
Most Bolens spools are designed to wind in a specific direction. Look for an arrow molded into the plastic or printed on the spool. Winding in the wrong direction can cause the line to bind or tangle inside the head. If your spool does not have a visible arrow, wind it the same way the original string was installed.
Reassembling the Trimmer Head
- Place the spool back into the head. Align the spool with the housing and press it down firmly until it clicks or locks into place.
- Thread the tail through the trimmer line exit slots. Pull the string through the small openings on the side of the head so it is ready to feed.
- Secure the head. If your model uses a retaining nut or screw, tighten it according to the manual’s torque specifications.
Testing the Unit
Reconnect the battery or plug in the unit. Hold the trimmer at waist height and briefly activate the trigger. Observe whether the line feeds smoothly and retracts evenly. If the line does not extend, check that the tail is threaded correctly through the exit slots. If it tangles or binds, remove the spool and re-wind it.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Line Not Feeding
If the line does not extend during operation, the spool may be over-tight or the exit slots may be blocked. Remove the head, clear any debris, and ensure the tail is properly positioned.
Line Tangling Inside the Head
Tangles usually result from incorrect wind direction or loose winding. Always follow the arrow on the spool and maintain consistent tension while winding.
Excessive Vibration
If the trimmer vibrates excessively after stringing, the spool may not be seated correctly. Remove it and reinstall, making sure it clicks firmly into place.
Maintenance Tips and Best Practices
- Replace the trim line every 3 to 6 months depending on usage frequency.
- Store spare string in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
- Clean the trimmer head after each use to remove grass clippings and dirt.
- Check the exit slots regularly for blockages or wear.
- Keep a spare spool pre-wound and ready for quick replacements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One of the most frequent errors is using string that is too thick or too thin for the model. This can cause feeding problems or put unnecessary strain on the motor. Another mistake is winding the string too loosely, which leads to tangles. Always maintain firm but not excessive tension. Some users also forget to thread the tail through the exit slots, resulting in no line feed during operation. Finally, rushing the process often leads to a poorly seated spool that vibrates or falls out during use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use generic string instead of Bolens-branded line?
Yes, as long as the diameter and material match your model’s specifications. Generic nylon line that meets the same gauge requirements will work just as well.
How often should I replace the trim line?
Replace it when the line becomes frayed, uneven, or fails to feed smoothly. For regular residential use, this typically occurs every 3 to 6 months.
What happens if I wind the string in the wrong direction?
The line will bind or tangle inside the spool housing, preventing smooth feed during operation. Always follow the wind direction arrow on the spool.
Is it difficult to string a Bolens weed eater?
No, the process is straightforward once you understand the steps. With the right tools and a bit of patience, most users can complete the task in under 15 minutes.
Can I string the trimmer without removing the head?
Some models allow top-loading spools that do not require full head removal. However, most Bolens trimmers need the head disassembled for proper access to the spool.
Conclusion
Learning how to string a Bolens weed eater is a simple skill that pays dividends in tool performance and longevity. By identifying your model, choosing the correct string, winding it in the proper direction, and following the reassembly steps, you can maintain your trimmer with confidence. Regular maintenance and attention to detail will keep your Bolens weed eater running smoothly season after season, saving you money on professional servicing and ensuring consistently clean cuts.
