Understanding the Shindaiwa Trimmer Head
Shindaiwa trimmers typically use a bump‑feed or fixed‑line head. The bump‑feed head releases new line when you tap the head against the ground, while a fixed‑line head requires manual line advancement. Both designs share a central spool that holds the line, a spring‑loaded eyelet, and a cover that secures the spool. Knowing which head your model uses determines the exact restringing steps. Most modern Shindaiwa models ship with a dual‑line bump‑feed head that accepts .080‑inch to .105‑inch line, but always verify the specifications in your owner’s manual before purchasing line.
Tools and Materials Needed
Gather the following items before you begin:
- Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length)
- Clean work surface or a sturdy bench
- Gloves to protect your hands from sharp line ends
- Needle‑nose pliers (optional, for stubborn eyelets)
- Small flat‑head screwdriver (for heads with a retaining screw)
- Owner’s manual for reference
Having everything at hand prevents interruptions and ensures a smooth workflow.
Choosing the Right Trimmer Line
Line diameter, shape, and material affect cutting performance and line life. Shindaiwa heads generally accept round, square, or twisted line. Round line is the most common and works well for general grass and light weeds. Square or twisted line offers sharper edges for tougher vegetation but can wear the head’s eyelet faster. Match the line diameter to the head’s maximum rating; using a line that is too thick can jam the feed mechanism, while a line that is too thin may break prematurely. For most residential Shindaiwa models, a .095‑inch round line provides a good balance of durability and cutting efficiency.
Preparing the Trimmer for Restringing
Before you touch the head, make sure the trimmer is completely powered down. For gas models, disconnect the spark plug wire; for electric or battery units, remove the battery or unplug the cord. Lay the trimmer on a stable surface with the head facing up. Remove any debris, grass clippings, or old line fragments from the head housing. A clean head reduces the chance of line snagging during the feed process.
Step‑by‑Step Restringing Process
- Remove the head cover. Most Shindaiwa heads unscrew counter‑clockwise. If a retaining screw is present, loosen it with the screwdriver first.
- Take out the spool. Pull the spool straight out. Note the orientation of the line guide slots; they dictate the winding direction.
- Cut the new line to length. Measure roughly 10‑12 feet for a dual‑line head. Cut the line cleanly with scissors or a utility knife.
- Insert the line into the anchor holes. Feed one end of the line into the designated anchor hole on the spool. Push until the line seats firmly.
- Wind the line evenly. Turn the spool in the direction indicated by the arrows on the spool (usually clockwise). Keep tension consistent so the line lays flat without overlapping.
- Leave a short tail. Stop winding when about 6‑8 inches of line remain. Thread the tail through the eyelet on the head housing.
- Reinstall the spool. Align the spool’s notches with the head’s drive tabs and press it back into place.
- Replace the cover. Screw the cover back on clockwise until snug. Re‑attach any retaining screw.
Follow each step carefully; rushing can cause uneven winding, which leads to feed problems later.
Testing the Line Feed
After reassembly, start the trimmer and let it reach operating speed. Gently tap the head on a patch of grass or a soft surface. The bump‑feed mechanism should release a few inches of line. If the line does not advance, shut off the trimmer, remove the cover, and verify that the line tails are correctly seated in the eyelets and that the spool rotates freely. Adjust as needed, then retest.
Maintenance Tips for Longevity
- Inspect the line after each use; replace it when it shows excessive wear or fraying.
- Clean the head housing periodically to prevent grass buildup that can impede the bump mechanism.
- Lubricate the spool shaft lightly with a silicone‑based spray if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Store the trimmer in a dry place; moisture can cause the line to become brittle.
- Use only line diameters approved for your specific head to avoid premature eyelet wear.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over‑winding the spool. Too much line creates tension that prevents the bump feed from releasing line.
- Using the wrong line diameter. This is the leading cause of jams and broken eyelets.
- Neglecting to clean the head before restringing. Debris can cause the line to snag or the spool to bind.
- Forgetting to secure the line tails in the eyelets. Loose tails will not feed and can whip dangerously.
- Reinstalling the cover cross‑threaded. This damages the threads and makes future removal difficult.
Comparison of Shindaiwa Trimmer Heads
| Head Type | Line Capacity | Ease of Restring | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bump‑Feed Dual Line | Up to 20 ft total | Moderate – requires spool removal | General residential and light commercial use |
| Fixed‑Line Single Line | Up to 12 ft | Easy – line threads directly | Precision trimming around obstacles |
| Automatic Feed (Auto‑Feed) | Up to 15 ft | Easy – no bump needed | High‑volume professional crews |
| Heavy‑Duty Square‑Line Head | Up to 18 ft | Moderate – thicker line | Thick brush and woody weeds |
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I restring my Shindaiwa weed eater?
Restring whenever the line becomes too short to cut effectively, typically after 1‑2 hours of heavy use or when you notice frequent line breakage.
Can I use any brand of trimmer line?
Yes, as long as the line diameter and shape match the head’s specifications. Using a reputable brand ensures consistent quality.
Why does the line keep jamming after I restring?
Jamming usually results from over‑winding, incorrect line diameter, or debris in the head. Re‑inspect the spool winding and clean the head thoroughly.
Do I need to lubricate the spool shaft?
Only if the manufacturer’s manual recommends it. A light silicone spray can reduce friction, but excess lubricant may attract dirt.
Is it safe to restring a gas trimmer myself?
Absolutely, provided you disconnect the spark plug wire and follow the steps outlined above. Always wear gloves and eye protection.
