Understanding the Stihl FS55R

Engine Specifications

The FS55R is powered by a 27.2 cc two‑stroke engine that delivers 1.1 kW (1.5 hp) at 9,500 rpm. The engine uses a semi‑automatic choke system that enriches the fuel mixture during cold starts and then leans out automatically as the engine warms. A centrifugal clutch engages the cutting head only when the throttle is opened, which prevents the line from spinning while the engine is idling.

Fuel System

Stihl recommends a 50:1 fuel‑to‑oil ratio using high‑quality two‑stroke oil. The fuel tank holds 0.33 L (11.2 oz), providing roughly 30 minutes of continuous run time at full throttle. A transparent fuel filter sits inside the tank and should be inspected periodically for debris. The carburetor is a fixed‑jet design, meaning no user adjustments are required under normal conditions.

Safety Features

Key safety elements include a throttle lock‑out lever that prevents accidental throttle engagement, a protective guard that deflects debris away from the operator, and a vibration‑dampening handle that reduces fatigue. The starter rope is equipped with a recoil spring that returns the rope smoothly, minimizing the chance of a snapped cord.

Preparing for First Start

Check Oil and Fuel

Before the very first pull, verify that the fuel tank is filled with a fresh 50:1 mixture. Stale fuel is the leading cause of hard starts. Shake the container gently to ensure the oil is fully emulsified. If the trimmer has been stored for more than 30 days, drain the old fuel and refill with a fresh batch.

Inspect the Air Filter

Remove the air filter cover by unscrewing the single knob. The foam filter should be clean, dry, and free of tears. If it appears dirty, wash it in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and let it air‑dry completely before reinstalling. A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing a rich mixture that floods the engine.

Examine the Spark Plug

Using a 13 mm spark‑plug socket, remove the plug and inspect the electrode. A healthy plug shows a light tan color. Black, sooty deposits indicate a rich mixture or oil‑fouling; a white, blistered tip signals overheating. Clean the plug with a wire brush or replace it if the gap is out of spec (0.6 mm). Re‑install and torque to 15 Nm.

Verify Throttle and Choke Operation

Move the throttle trigger to the full‑open position and confirm the choke lever moves freely between the “cold” (closed) and “run” (open) positions. The choke should snap back to the run position automatically once the engine fires. If the lever sticks, lubricate the pivot point with a light machine oil.

Step‑by‑Step Starting Procedure

1. Place the trimmer on a flat, stable surface. Ensure the cutting head is clear of obstacles and the guard is properly attached.
2. Set the choke to the cold‑start position. Pull the choke lever fully out (usually marked with a snowflake icon). This enriches the mixture for a cold engine.
3. Engage the throttle lock‑out. Squeeze the throttle trigger and hold it in the “start” detent (usually a half‑click). This keeps the throttle slightly open, allowing air to enter the cylinder.
4. Prime the carburetor (if equipped). Press the primer bulb 3–5 times until fuel is visible in the bulb. The FS55R typically has a primer; if yours does not, skip this step.
5. Grip the starter handle firmly. Place your dominant hand on the starter grip, keep the other hand on the rear handle for balance.
6. Pull the starter rope briskly. Use a smooth, full‑length pull. Do not yank; a steady pull engages the recoil spring efficiently.
7. Listen for the first fire. The engine may cough once or twice. If it does not fire after 4–5 pulls, return the choke to the run position and try again.
8. Move the choke to the run position. As soon as the engine runs steadily, push the choke lever fully in (run position). The engine should now idle smoothly.
9. Release the throttle lock‑out. Allow the trigger to return to idle. The centrifugal clutch will disengage the cutting head.
10. Warm up for 30 seconds. Let the engine idle before applying full throttle. This ensures proper oil circulation and reduces wear.

Cold Start vs Warm Start

Cold Start Procedure

When the engine has been sitting for more than an hour, the fuel in the carburetor bowl may have evaporated, and the cylinder walls are cold. The choke must be fully closed, the throttle lock‑out engaged, and the primer bulb used to draw fresh fuel into the carburetor. Expect 3–5 pulls before the first fire.

Warm Start Procedure

If the trimmer was running within the last 10–15 minutes, the engine retains heat and residual fuel. In this case, set the choke to the run position (open), keep the throttle lock‑out engaged, and pull the starter rope. Usually one or two pulls are sufficient. Do not use the primer bulb on a warm engine; excess fuel can flood the cylinder.

Troubleshooting Common Starting Issues

• Engine cranks but won’t fire. Verify fuel is fresh and the choke is in the correct position. Check the spark plug for fouling; clean or replace as needed.
• Engine fires but dies immediately. This often indicates a lean mixture. Ensure the air filter is clean and the fuel line is not kinked. A partially clogged fuel filter can also cause this symptom.
• Starter rope pulls with excessive resistance. The recoil spring may be damaged or the starter pawl engaged. Inspect the starter assembly for broken springs or debris.
• Fuel leaks from the carburetor. Over‑priming or a stuck float needle can flood the engine. Turn the choke to run, hold the throttle wide open, and pull the rope several times to clear excess fuel.
• No spark at the plug. Test with a spark tester. If absent, check the ignition coil gap (0.3 mm) and the kill switch wiring. Replace the coil if the gap is correct but no spark appears.

Maintenance Tips for Reliable Starts

• Replace the fuel filter annually. A clogged filter starves the carburetor and leads to hard starts.
• Clean the spark plug every 25 hours. Use a wire brush and check the gap; replace if the electrode is eroded.
• Inspect the recoil starter rope. Look for fraying or knots; replace the rope before it snaps during a start.
• Lubricate the throttle cable. A few drops of light oil at the cable entry point keep the trigger smooth.
• Store with a full tank of stabilized fuel. Add a fuel stabilizer if the trimmer will sit unused for more than 30 days.
• Check the cutting head for balance. An unbalanced head creates vibration that can loosen engine mounts over time.

Best Practices for Longevity

• Always start the trimmer on a level surface to avoid fuel spillage into the carburetor.
• Allow the engine to warm up for at least 30 seconds before engaging the cutting head.
• Use the correct line diameter (2.4 mm for the FS55R) to prevent excessive load on the engine.
• Sharpen or replace the cutting line regularly; a dull line forces the engine to work harder.
• After each use, wipe down the exterior and remove grass buildup from the guard and air intake.
• Schedule a professional service check once per season, especially if the trimmer sees heavy use.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Over‑priming the carburetor. Too many primer presses flood the engine, making it impossible to start until the excess fuel evaporates.
• Leaving the choke closed after the engine fires. This creates an overly rich mixture, causing the engine to stall and carbon‑up the spark plug.
• Pulling the starter rope at an angle. Angled pulls wear the starter pawl and can snap the rope.
• Using automotive two‑stroke oil. Automotive oils lack the additives needed for air‑cooled engines and can cause piston scoring.
• Neglecting the air filter. A dirty filter reduces airflow, leading to a rich mixture, fouled plug, and poor performance.
• Storing the trimmer with fuel in the tank for months. Stale fuel forms varnish that clogs the carburetor jets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pulls should it take to start a cold FS55R?

A properly maintained FS55R typically fires within 3–5 pulls when the choke is set to cold, the throttle lock‑out is engaged, and the primer bulb has been pressed 3–5 times. If it takes more than 7 pulls, check fuel freshness, spark plug condition, and air filter cleanliness.

Can I use gasoline with ethanol (E10) in my FS55R?

Stihl approves up to 10 % ethanol (E10) provided the fuel is fresh and a fuel stabilizer is used for storage longer than 30 days. Higher ethanol blends (E15, E85) are not recommended because they can damage the carburetor seals and cause phase separation.

Why does the engine die when I release the throttle after starting?

This usually means the choke was left in the cold position too long, creating an overly rich mixture that cannot sustain idle. Push the choke to the run position as soon as the engine runs smoothly, then let the throttle return to idle.

How often should I replace the spark plug?

Inspect the plug every 25 hours of operation. Replace it at least once per season or whenever the electrode shows excessive wear, fouling, or the gap cannot be set to 0.6 mm.

What is the correct fuel‑to‑oil mix ratio for the FS55R?

Stihl specifies a 50:1 ratio (50 parts gasoline to 1 part two‑stroke oil). Use a high‑quality synthetic or semi‑synthetic two‑stroke oil that meets JASO FD or ISO-L-EGD standards.

Conclusion

Starting a Stihl FS55R reliably comes down to a few disciplined habits: use fresh 50:1 fuel, keep the air filter and spark plug clean, follow the cold‑start choke sequence, and allow the engine a brief warm‑up before loading the cutting head. By mastering the step‑by‑step starting procedure outlined above and adhering to the maintenance and best‑practice recommendations, you will minimize frustrating pull‑counts, extend the life of the recoil starter, and enjoy consistent cutting performance throughout the season. Whether you are a first‑time owner or a seasoned landscaper, applying these principles ensures that every time you ask yourself how to start a Stihl Weed Eater Fs55r, the answer is a smooth, confident pull and a ready‑to‑work trimmer.
