Understanding Your Murray M2510 Weed Eater

Before diving into the starting process, it helps to familiarize yourself with the key components of the Murray M2510, as each plays a role in getting the engine running. This model features a 25cc 2-stroke gas engine, a 16-inch cutting swath, and a lightweight curved shaft design that reduces user fatigue during extended use. The core components you’ll interact with when starting the weed eater include:

• Fuel tank: Located near the base of the shaft, this holds the 2-stroke fuel mix. It has a cap that seals tightly to prevent leaks.
• Primer bulb: A small rubber bulb on the side of the carburetor that you press to push fuel into the engine before starting.
• Choke lever: A sliding or rotating lever that controls the air-to-fuel mixture. It has two positions: “closed” (for cold starts, enriches the mixture) and “open” (for running and warm starts).
• Throttle trigger and lock: The trigger on the handle controls engine speed, while the lock (usually a button next to the trigger) holds the throttle in the “start” position for easier cord pulling.
• Starter cord and recoil mechanism: The pull cord on the top of the engine spins the internal flywheel to ignite the fuel mixture and start the engine.
• Spark plug: Located on the side of the engine, it creates the spark that ignites the fuel mixture. A clean, properly gapped spark plug is critical for reliable starting.

Unlike 4-stroke lawn mowers, the Murray M2510’s 2-stroke engine requires fuel to be mixed with 2-stroke oil in a specific ratio, which we’ll cover in detail later. Understanding these components will make the starting process far less confusing, especially if you’re new to gas-powered outdoor power equipment.

Pre-Start Safety Checks

Skipping pre-start safety checks can lead to injury, equipment damage, or even fire, so always complete these steps before attempting to start your Murray M2510, even if you’ve used it recently.

1. Clear your work area: Remove rocks, sticks, toys, and other debris from the area you’ll be working in. The cutting head can throw objects at high speed, causing serious injury to you or bystanders.
2. Wear appropriate protective gear: Always wear safety goggles or glasses to protect your eyes from debris, heavy-duty gloves to protect your hands from the cutting line and engine heat, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Avoid loose clothing that could get caught in the cutting head.
3. Inspect for fuel leaks: Check the fuel tank cap, fuel lines, and carburetor for any signs of gas leaks. If you smell fuel or see wet spots, do not start the engine—address the leak first to avoid fire hazards.
4. Check the cutting head: Make sure the cutting line is properly installed and the cutting head is securely attached. Remove any tangled debris or weeds wrapped around the line or shaft.
5. Test the throttle and shut-off switch: Squeeze the throttle trigger to make sure it moves freely and the engine speed increases. Locate the on/off switch (usually on the handle) and confirm it is in the “on” position before starting.
6. Verify the spark plug boot is secure: Push on the spark plug boot (the rubber cap covering the spark plug) to make sure it is fully seated. A loose boot can cause weak or no spark, leading to starting failures.

These checks take less than 2 minutes but can prevent accidents and unnecessary troubleshooting later.

How to Start a Murray M2510 Weed Eater: Cold Start Procedure

A cold start is required when the engine has not run for 2 or more hours, or if the weed eater has been stored in a cool environment. The cold start process uses the choke to enrich the fuel mixture, making it easier to ignite when the engine is at room temperature.

1. Position the weed eater on flat, stable ground: Set the tool down with the cutting head facing away from you, your feet, and any nearby objects. Make sure the throttle is not engaged, as this can cause the engine to kick back when you pull the starter cord.
2. Fill the fuel tank with the correct mix: If the tank is empty, add the proper 50:1 2-stroke fuel mix (1 gallon of unleaded gasoline mixed with 2.6 ounces of 2-stroke oil). Do not overfill the tank—leave about 1/2 inch of space at the top to allow for fuel expansion. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately to avoid fire risk.
3. Prime the primer bulb: Press the rubber primer bulb 3 to 5 times, holding it down for 1 second each time. You should see fuel begin to fill the bulb after 2-3 presses. Priming pushes fuel from the tank into the carburetor, so the engine has fuel to ignite when you pull the starter cord. If you don’t see fuel in the bulb after 5 presses, check that the fuel tank has fuel and the fuel lines are not clogged.
4. Set the choke to the “closed” position: Locate the choke lever on the side of the carburetor and slide or rotate it to the “closed” or “start” position. This restricts airflow to the carburetor, creating a richer fuel mixture that ignites more easily in a cold engine. If your model does not have a separate choke lever, check if the throttle lock sets the choke automatically when engaged.
5. Set the throttle to the start position: Squeeze the throttle trigger and press the throttle lock button to hold it in the partially open position. This gives the engine a small amount of fuel to help it start. Do not hold the throttle fully open, as this can flood the engine.
6. Pull the starter cord: Grip the starter handle firmly and pull the cord slowly 2 to 3 times to let fuel flow into the engine cylinder. Then, pull the cord firmly and quickly 3 to 5 times. You should hear the engine sputter or make a series of short firing sounds as it tries to start. If the engine does not start after 5 pulls, re-check the choke position and primer bulb priming, as these are the most common causes of failed cold starts.
7. Adjust the choke once the engine starts: As soon as the engine runs, move the choke lever to the “open” or “run” position gradually over 30 seconds. If you move the choke to open too quickly, the engine may stall because the mixture is too lean for a cold engine.
8. Release the throttle lock and test the engine: Let the weed eater idle for 30 seconds to warm up, then release the throttle lock. Squeeze the throttle trigger to confirm the engine speed increases smoothly, then you’re ready to begin cutting.

Most users can start a cold Murray M2510 in under 1 minute once they master this process. If the engine still won’t start after following these steps, move on to the troubleshooting section below to identify the issue.

How to Start a Murray M2510 Weed Eater: Warm Start Procedure

A warm start is required when the engine has run within the last 1 to 2 hours, and the internal components are still hot. Warm starts are faster than cold starts because the engine already has fuel vapor in the carburetor, so you do not need to use the choke.

1. Position the weed eater on flat ground: Just like with a cold start, set the tool down with the cutting head facing away from you and any obstacles, and make sure the throttle is disengaged.
2. Prime the primer bulb 1 to 2 times: Since the engine is warm, you only need to press the primer bulb once or twice to push a small amount of fuel into the carburetor. Over-priming a warm engine can cause flooding, so stick to 1-2 presses.
3. Set the throttle to the start position: Squeeze the throttle trigger and engage the throttle lock to hold it in the partially open position, just as you would for a cold start.
4. Pull the starter cord firmly 1 to 3 times: A warm engine should start on the first or second pull. Pull the cord quickly and smoothly to avoid stalling the recoil mechanism.
5. Release the throttle lock and let the engine idle: Once the engine starts, release the throttle lock and let it run for 10 to 15 seconds to stabilize before squeezing the throttle to begin cutting. No choke adjustment is needed for warm starts, as the engine is already at operating temperature.

If your warm start attempts fail, check that you did not over-prime the bulb, and confirm the fuel tank has enough mixed fuel. Warm starting issues are almost always related to incorrect priming or low fuel levels.

Troubleshooting Common Starting Issues

Even with proper starting technique, you may occasionally run into issues with your Murray M2510. Below are the most common starting problems and their fixes:

Engine Won’t Start After Multiple Pulls

If the engine sputters but won’t turn over after 5 or more pulls, first check the following:

• Confirm the fuel tank has fresh, correctly mixed 2-stroke fuel. Stale fuel or the wrong oil ratio are the top causes of starting failures.
• Check that the choke is in the correct position for a cold or warm start.
• Inspect the spark plug for fouling (black, sooty buildup) or an incorrect gap. Clean the plug with a wire brush or replace it if the gap is worn, and confirm the gap is set to 0.020 to 0.025 inches.
• Remove and clean the air filter if it is clogged with debris. A dirty air filter restricts airflow, preventing the engine from getting the right fuel-air mixture to start.

Engine Starts Then Stalls Immediately

If the engine runs for a few seconds then dies, the issue is almost always related to the choke or fuel mixture:

• Make sure you gradually opened the choke after a cold start. Opening the choke too quickly will make the mixture too lean, causing the engine to stall.
• Check for a clogged carburetor jet, which can block fuel flow to the engine. You can clear minor clogs by spraying carburetor cleaner into the air intake while the engine is off, then trying to start it again.
• Confirm you are using the correct fuel mix. Too much oil in the mix can cause the engine to run rich and stall, while too little oil can cause overheating and stalling.

Starter Cord Is Hard to Pull or Stuck

A stiff or stuck starter cord is usually caused by a flooded engine or a recoil mechanism issue:

• If the engine is flooded (you’ll smell raw gas coming from the exhaust), turn the choke to the open position, remove the spark plug, and pull the starter cord 5 to 10 times to clear excess fuel from the cylinder. Wipe the spark plug dry, reinstall it, and wait 5 minutes before trying to start again.
• If the cord is still stuck after clearing a flooded engine, the recoil spring may be broken or jammed. Do not force the cord, as this can break the mechanism further. Take the weed eater to a small engine repair shop for service.

For persistent starting issues that you can’t resolve with these fixes, consult your owner’s manual or contact Murray customer support for further guidance.

Maintenance Tips to Ensure Reliable Starting

Regular maintenance is the single best way to avoid starting issues with your Murray M2510. Follow these tips to keep your weed eater running smoothly:

• Use fresh fuel at all times: Mixed 2-stroke fuel goes stale after 30 days, even if stored in a sealed container. Stale fuel forms varnish that clogs the carburetor jets, making starting difficult. Add a fuel stabilizer to mixed fuel if you won’t use it within 30 days, and always shake the fuel container before filling the tank to mix the oil and gas evenly.
• Clean the air filter every 5 to 10 hours of use: A dirty air filter restricts airflow, leading to a lean fuel mixture that makes starting hard. Tap the filter gently to remove loose debris, or wash it with soap and water if it is very dirty. Replace the filter if it is torn or heavily soiled.
• Inspect and replace the spark plug annually: A worn or fouled spark plug produces a weak spark that can’t ignite the fuel mixture reliably. Remove the spark plug every season, clean it with a wire brush, and check the gap with a spark plug gauge. Replace it if the electrode is worn or the porcelain is cracked.
• Check fuel lines and connections regularly: Inspect the fuel lines and tank cap for cracks, leaks, or wear every few months. Replace damaged fuel lines immediately to prevent leaks and fuel starvation.
• Clean the cutting head after each use: Wrapped weeds and debris around the cutting head can put extra strain on the engine, making it harder to start. Remove the cutting head and clean out any tangled material after each use.

Following these simple maintenance steps will extend the life of your Murray M2510 and eliminate most common starting problems.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Starting Your Weed Eater

Many starting issues are caused by simple, avoidable mistakes. Avoid these common errors to make starting your Murray M2510 faster and easier:

• Using stale or incorrectly mixed fuel: This is the number one cause of starting failures. Never use fuel that is more than 30 days old, and always measure the oil-to-gas ratio carefully—eyeballing the mix will lead to too much or too little oil, both of which cause starting and running issues.
• Leaving the choke on after the engine starts: Running the engine with the choke fully closed will cause it to run too rich, fouling the spark plug and making future starts difficult. Always move the choke to the open position gradually once the engine is running.
• Over-priming the primer bulb: Pressing the primer bulb too many times, especially on a warm engine, will flood the carburetor with fuel, making starting impossible until the excess fuel drains. Stick to 3-5 presses for cold starts and 1-2 for warm starts.
• Forcing the starter cord when it’s stuck: Pulling the starter cord too hard when it’s stiff can break the recoil spring, requiring an expensive repair. If the cord is stuck, first check for a flooded engine, and if that’s not the issue, take the tool to a repair professional instead of forcing it.
• Skipping pre-start safety checks: Rushing to start the weed eater without checking for fuel leaks, debris in the cutting area, or worn protective gear can lead to injury or equipment damage. Always take 2 minutes to complete the pre-start checks outlined earlier.
• Storing the weed eater with fuel in the tank for long periods: If you won’t use the weed eater for more than 2 weeks, empty the fuel tank or run the engine until it runs out of fuel. Storing it with fuel in the tank will cause varnish buildup in the carburetor, leading to starting issues when you next use it.

Avoiding these mistakes will save you time and frustration, and keep your Murray M2510 in good working condition for years.

Fuel and Lubricant Recommendations for the Murray M2510

Using the correct fuel and lubricant is critical for reliable starting and long engine life. The Murray M2510 requires a 2-stroke fuel mix, meaning gasoline is combined with 2-stroke engine oil in a specific ratio. Using the wrong fuel or oil can cause starting issues, engine damage, and even void your warranty. The table below outlines recommended and incorrect practices for fuel and lubricant use:

When mixing fuel, always add the oil to the gas can first, then add gasoline, and shake the can thoroughly to mix the two liquids evenly. Never mix fuel directly in the weed eater’s fuel tank, as this can lead to an incorrect ratio.

Adjusting the Carburetor for Easier Starting

If your Murray M2510 still struggles to start after following all the steps above and performing basic maintenance, the carburetor may need adjustment. The carburetor controls the air-to-fuel mixture, and over time, vibrations can loosen the adjustment screws, leading to a lean or rich mixture that makes starting difficult. Most Murray M2510 models have two adjustment screws on the side of the carburetor: the idle speed screw (marked “ID” or “T”) and the low-speed mixture screw (marked “L”).

Follow these steps to adjust the carburetor for easier starting:

1. Warm up the engine first: Start the weed eater and let it run for 2 to 3 minutes until it reaches operating temperature. Adjusting a cold carburetor will give inaccurate results.
2. Adjust the idle speed screw: Turn the idle speed screw clockwise until the engine starts to run rough or stall. Then, turn it counterclockwise 1/4 turn to raise the idle speed to a smooth, steady idle. This ensures the engine has enough power to turn over when you pull the starter cord.
3. Adjust the low-speed mixture screw: Turn the low-speed mixture screw clockwise until the engine starts to run rough or lose power. Then, turn it counterclockwise 1/8 to 1/4 turn until the engine runs smoothly at idle. This optimizes the fuel mixture for starting and low-speed operation.
4. Test the start: Turn the engine off, then try starting it with the cold start procedure. If it still struggles, adjust the low-speed mixture screw an additional 1/16 turn counterclockwise and test again. Do not turn the screw more than 1/2 turn total from its original position, as over-adjustment can cause engine damage or poor performance.

If you are not comfortable adjusting the carburetor yourself, take the weed eater to a small engine repair shop. A professional can adjust the carburetor and clean the jets if needed for a small fee.

Long-Term Storage Tips to Keep Your Weed Eater Ready to Start

If you won’t be using your Murray M2510 for more than 2 weeks, proper storage will prevent starting issues when you next use it. Follow these steps to store your weed eater correctly:

1. Empty the fuel tank: Either run the engine until it runs out of fuel, or drain the fuel tank and carburetor completely. Storing the weed eater with fuel in the tank will cause varnish to build up in the carburetor, which can clog the jets and make starting impossible after extended storage.
2. Protect the engine cylinder: Remove the spark plug, pour 1 teaspoon of 2-stroke oil into the cylinder, and pull the starter cord 2 to 3 times to coat the cylinder walls with oil. This prevents rust and corrosion inside the engine during storage. Reinstall the spark plug after this step.
3. Clean the tool thoroughly: Remove all weeds and debris from the cutting head and shaft, and wipe down the entire tool with a dry cloth. Store the cutting head in a cool, dry place if you are storing the weed eater for more than 3 months, to prevent the cutting line from becoming brittle.
4. Store in a cool, dry location: Keep the weed eater in a garage, shed, or other covered area away from direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Do not store it outdoors or in a damp basement, as moisture can cause rust and damage to the engine and electrical components.

When you’re ready to use the weed eater again after long-term storage, follow the cold start procedure, and it should start easily if stored correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times should I pull the starter cord to start a cold Murray M2510?

For a properly maintained weed eater with fresh fuel, you should only need to pull the starter cord 3 to 5 times to start a cold engine. If it doesn’t start after 5 pulls, re-check that the choke is in the closed position, the primer bulb was pressed 3 to 5 times, and the fuel tank has the correct 2-stroke mix. Most failed cold starts are caused by incorrect choke or primer settings, not a mechanical issue.

Why won’t my Murray M2510 start even after following all steps?

If you’ve followed the cold and warm start procedures correctly and the engine still won’t start, the most common causes are stale or incorrectly mixed fuel, a dirty/fouled spark plug, a clogged air filter, or a flooded engine. First, drain the fuel tank and add fresh 50:1 mixed fuel. Next, remove the spark plug, clean it with a wire brush, and confirm the gap is set to 0.020 to 0.025 inches. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty. If the engine is flooded, remove the spark plug, pull the starter cord 5 to 10 times to clear excess fuel, wait 5 minutes, and try again. If these steps don’t work, the carburetor may be clogged and need cleaning, or there may be an issue with the recoil mechanism that requires professional repair.

Can I use ethanol-blended gasoline in my Murray M2510?

The Murray M2510 is compatible with fuel containing up to 10% ethanol, but ethanol-free unleaded gasoline is strongly recommended for optimal performance and starting reliability. Ethanol absorbs moisture from the air, which can cause phase separation in the fuel tank after 30 days, leading to water in the carburetor that clogs jets and prevents starting. If you only have access to ethanol-blended fuel, add a fuel stabilizer to the mix and use it within 2 weeks to minimize moisture-related issues.

How often should I replace the spark plug on my Murray M2510?

For most residential users, replacing the spark plug once per year (or every 50 hours of use, whichever comes first) will ensure reliable starting. A worn or fouled spark plug produces a weak spark that can’t ignite the fuel mixture consistently, even if all other components are in good condition. You can clean a slightly fouled spark plug with a wire brush and regap it, but replace it if the electrode is worn down or the porcelain is cracked.

What should I do if I flood the engine while starting?

A flooded engine occurs when too much fuel enters the cylinder, making starting impossible. You’ll know the engine is flooded if you smell strong raw gas coming from the exhaust, or if the starter cord feels extremely hard to pull. To fix it, first turn the choke to the fully open position, then remove the spark plug. Pull the starter cord 5 to 10 times to clear excess fuel from the cylinder, then wipe the spark plug dry with a clean cloth. Reinstall the spark plug, wait 5 minutes for the excess fuel to evaporate, then try starting again with the warm start procedure. Do not keep pulling the starter cord while the engine is flooded, as this can damage the recoil spring.
