What Is the Choke on a Weed Eater?
The choke is a valve or plate that restricts the amount of air entering the carburetor while the engine is cold. By limiting airflow, the choke enriches the fuel‑air mixture, making it easier for the spark plug to ignite the mixture and get the engine running. On most string trimmers the choke is a lever or knob located near the carburetor, often labeled “Choke,” “Start,” or with a simple icon of a partially closed butterfly valve.
When the engine is warm, the choke must be opened fully so the engine can breathe normally. Leaving the choke closed on a hot engine floods the combustion chamber with excess fuel, causing hard starts, rough idle, and fouled spark plugs. Knowing the choke’s role is the first step toward mastering cold‑start reliability.
How the Choke Works
Inside the carburetor a butterfly valve (the choke plate) pivots on a shaft. In the “closed” position the plate blocks most of the venturi, forcing the engine to draw a higher proportion of fuel from the main jet. This rich mixture has a lower ignition temperature, which compensates for the poor vaporization of cold gasoline.
As the engine warms, the fuel vaporizes more readily. The operator (or an automatic mechanism) then rotates the plate to the “open” position, restoring the normal air‑fuel ratio. The transition from rich to stoichiometric mixture is what allows the engine to run smoothly across its operating temperature range.
Types of Chokes
Manual Choke
A manual choke requires the user to move a lever or knob before each cold start. This design is simple, inexpensive, and gives the operator full control over the enrichment level. Most residential‑grade trimmers use a manual choke.
Automatic (Thermostatic) Choke
An automatic choke uses a bimetallic spring or a wax‑pellet element that expands as the engine heats. The choke plate opens gradually without user intervention. This design is common on higher‑end or commercial models where convenience and consistent starts are priorities.
Primer Bulb with Integrated Choke
Some modern trimmers combine a primer bulb and choke into a single control. Pressing the primer bulb pumps fuel into the carburetor while simultaneously positioning the choke plate for a cold start. This hybrid system reduces the number of steps required to start the engine.
Starting a Weed Eater with the Choke
Follow these steps for a reliable cold start on a typical manual‑choke trimmer: (See Also:How To Load Craftsman Weed Eater String)
- Set the choke to the closed (full) position. This enriches the mixture for the initial crank.
- Prime the carburetor. Press the primer bulb 3–5 times until fuel is visible in the bulb.
- Set the throttle trigger to the “start” or “fast idle” position. Many models have a throttle lock that holds the trigger partially open.
- Pull the starter cord briskly. Use a smooth, full‑length pull; avoid yanking.
- Listen for the engine to fire. It may sputter for a second or two.
- Move the choke to the half‑open (mid) position. This leans the mixture slightly while the engine continues to warm.
- Pull the starter cord again if needed. The engine should now run steadily.
- After 10–15 seconds, open the choke fully. The engine is now warm enough for normal operation.
- Release the throttle lock and let the engine idle. Adjust the idle speed if the trimmer head spins unintentionally.
For automatic chokes, simply prime the bulb, set the throttle, and pull the cord. The choke will manage itself.
Common Choke Settings and When to Use Them
Most chokes have three detents: Full (Closed), Half (Mid), and Open (Off). Use the full setting only for the very first pull on a cold engine. The half setting is a transitional position that helps the engine stabilize before the choke is fully opened. The open position is for normal running and for restarting a warm engine. Some models label these positions with icons: a solid butterfly for full, a half‑filled butterfly for mid, and an empty circle for open.
If the engine has been sitting for more than an hour in cool weather, treat it as cold and start with the full choke. In warm climates or after a brief pause, you may skip the full choke and go straight to half or open.
Troubleshooting Choke Problems
Engine Floods After Starting
If the engine fires but then dies and smells strongly of gasoline, the choke may have been left closed too long. Open the choke fully, hold the throttle wide open, and pull the starter cord several times to clear excess fuel. Then attempt a normal start with the choke open.
Choke Lever Stuck or Hard to Move
Dirt, grass clippings, or old fuel residue can gum the choke shaft. Remove the air filter cover, spray a carburetor cleaner on the shaft, and work the lever back and forth until it moves freely. Lubricate lightly with a dry PTFE spray if the manufacturer permits.
Automatic Choke Does Not Open
A faulty bimetallic spring or wax element can keep the choke closed, causing a rich run condition. Check for visible damage, ensure the choke linkage is not bent, and replace the thermostatic element if necessary.
Hard Starting When Warm
If the trimmer refuses to start after a short run, the choke may be inadvertently left in the half position. Verify the choke is fully open before attempting a warm restart.
Choke Comparison: Manual vs. Automatic
| Feature | Manual Choke | Automatic Choke |
|---|---|---|
| User Control | Full control over enrichment | System manages enrichment |
| Complexity | Simple lever or knob | Thermostatic spring or wax element |
| Typical Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Cold‑Start Reliability | Excellent when used correctly | Consistent, no user error |
| Maintenance | Occasional cleaning of lever shaft | Periodic inspection of thermostatic element |
| Best For | Homeowners, occasional use | Professionals, frequent starts |
Best Practices for Choke Maintenance
- Clean the choke shaft annually. Remove the air filter housing, spray carburetor cleaner, and wipe away debris.
- Inspect the choke plate for warping. A bent plate will not seal properly, causing lean or rich conditions.
- Check the return spring. On manual chokes, the spring should snap the lever back to open when released. Replace if weak.
- Use fresh fuel. Stale gasoline leaves varnish that can gum the choke mechanism.
- Store the trimmer with the choke open. This prevents the plate from sticking in the closed position during long storage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving the choke closed after the engine warms. This floods the engine and fouls the spark plug.
- Over‑priming the carburetor. Too many primer pumps push raw fuel into the intake, making starting harder.
- Forcing a stuck choke lever. Applying excessive force can bend the shaft or break the return spring.
- Ignoring the half‑choke position. Skipping the mid setting can cause the engine to stall during the warm‑up transition.
- Assuming all trimmers use the same choke symbols. Always consult the owner’s manual for the exact markings on your model.
Adjusting the Choke for Optimal Performance
On some professional models the choke plate can be fine‑tuned via a small set screw on the carburetor body. Turning the screw clockwise typically reduces the maximum closure, yielding a slightly leaner cold mixture. This adjustment is useful at high altitude where the air is thinner and a fully closed choke may over‑enrich the mixture. Make adjustments in small increments (¼ turn) and test start the engine after each change. Keep a log of the setting that provides the quickest, smoothest cold start for future reference. Frequently Asked Questions
What does the choke do on a weed eater?
The choke restricts airflow to the carburetor, creating a richer fuel‑air mixture that helps a cold engine ignite more easily.
How do I know if my choke is manual or automatic?
Look for a lever or knob labeled “Choke” that you must move yourself; that indicates a manual choke. If there is no user‑operated lever and the engine starts reliably without touching a choke control, it likely has an automatic thermostatic choke.
Why does my trimmer flood when I use the choke?
Flooding usually means the choke was left closed too long after the engine fired, or the primer bulb was pumped excessively. Open the choke fully, hold the throttle wide, and crank the engine to clear the excess fuel.
Can I start a warm engine with the choke closed?
No. A warm engine needs the normal air‑fuel ratio. Using the choke on a hot engine will flood it and make starting difficult.
How often should I clean the choke mechanism?
At least once per season, or more often if you operate in dusty or grassy conditions. Regular cleaning prevents sticking and ensures smooth operation. (See Also:How To Start A Stihl F591r Weed Eater)
What is the difference between choke and throttle?
The choke controls the air‑fuel mixture richness for starting, while the throttle controls engine speed by regulating how much mixture enters the combustion chamber during operation.
