Understanding Your Weed Eater String Spool

Before you start rolling new line, it’s important to understand how your weed eater’s spool works, as different designs require slightly different winding techniques. The spool is the small, rotating cylinder inside the trimmer head that holds the trimmer line. It has a central hub with small notches or slots to hold the line in place while winding, and outer edges with holes that feed the line out through the trimmer head as you work. Most spools are made of durable plastic, and are designed to be removed and refilled when the line runs out.

Trimmer line comes in a variety of shapes, thicknesses, and materials, each suited for different types of yard work. The most common line types include round line (the standard all-purpose option with a circular cross-section, ideal for light grass trimming and edging), square line (with a four-sided cross-section and sharp edges that cut cleanly through thicker grass and medium weeds), star or serrated line (with a toothed cross-section that grabs and shreds tough, woody vegetation and heavy overgrowth), and reinforced polymer line (coated with a tough polymer layer that resists abrasion from rocks and dirt, lasting 2–3 times longer than standard nylon line). Line thickness, measured in inches (usually .065″, .080″, or .095″ for residential and commercial models), also impacts performance: thicker line cuts more effectively through tough vegetation but requires more power from the motor, while thinner line is lighter and easier to feed but breaks more easily on thick weeds.

Weed eater spools come in two primary designs. Single-line spools, the most common for residential models, hold one continuous length of line and are simple to wind and replace. Dual-line spools hold two separate lengths of line, cutting faster and covering more area with each pass, and are standard for commercial-grade trimmers. Many modern spools also feature a bump-feed mechanism, where tapping the trimmer head on the ground releases a small amount of line automatically, and some include a line retention clip that holds the line in place when the trimmer is not in use to prevent unraveling. For these models, you’ll need to leave a small length of line extending from the feed holes when you reinstall the spool to activate the bump-feed function. Always check your weed eater’s manual to confirm your spool type and any model-specific requirements before winding new line.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Rolling string on a weed eater requires no specialized tools, and most of the items you need are likely already in your garage or toolbox. Gather these supplies before you start to work efficiently:

• Replacement trimmer line matching your weed eater’s required gauge (usually .065″, .080″, or .095″ diameter) and length (most spools hold 10–20 feet of line)
• Wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors for cutting line to length
• Small flathead screwdriver to remove the spool cover and secure line ends
• Clean, dry cloth to wipe grass and debris off the spool hub
• Optional: Trimmer line lubricant to reduce friction and prevent line from fraying during use

If you don’t have wire cutters on hand, a sharp utility knife can also be used to cut trimmer line, but take care to avoid cuts to your fingers. If you’re unsure what line gauge your weed eater uses, check the user manual or the side of the old spool for printed specifications.

Step-by-Step: How to Roll String on a Weed Eater

Once you have your tools and materials ready, follow these simple steps to roll new string on your weed eater quickly and correctly. If you’re new to this process, don’t worry – it’s easier than it looks, and you’ll master it in just a few tries. The entire process takes 5–10 minutes for most models.

1. Prepare the spool: Disconnect the power source first (unplug electric models, remove the battery from cordless trimmers, or drain gas from gas-powered units) to avoid accidental startup. Locate the spool release tab or screw on the bottom of the trimmer head, press the tab or unscrew the cover, and pull the old spool out. Cut off any remaining old line with wire cutters, then use a clean cloth to wipe away grass, dirt, and debris from the spool hub and inside of the trimmer head. Buildup can cause the spool to sit crookedly or the line to catch during feeding.
2. Wind the string correctly: Look for a small arrow printed on the side of the spool, which indicates the correct winding direction (almost always clockwise when viewed from the front of the spool). Insert one end of the trimmer line into one of the small notches on the spool hub to anchor it, then wrap the line tightly around the hub, overlapping each layer slightly to eliminate gaps. Keep the line taut as you wind to avoid loops or tangles. For dual-line spools, repeat the process with the second line, inserting it into the opposite notch and winding in the same direction. Stop winding when the top layer of line is about 1/4 inch below the edge of the spool to avoid overfilling.
3. Secure the string ends: Tuck the end of the wound line into the notch on the edge of the spool that you used to start winding. If your spool has a small hole in the hub instead of a notch, thread the end through the hole to hold it in place. For dual-line spools, secure both line ends in their respective edge notches. Make sure the ends are tucked tightly so they won’t slip out during installation or use.
4. Reinstall the spool: Align the spool with the feed holes in the trimmer head, making sure the wound line lines up with the corresponding holes. Push the spool into the head until it clicks into place. For bump-feed trimmer models, pull 4–5 inches of line out from each side of the head to pre-load the bump-feed mechanism, so it releases line correctly when you tap the head on the ground during use. Replace the spool cover, pressing it firmly until it locks into place, or screw it back in tightly if your model uses a screw-fastened cover. Pull the line ends gently to confirm they feed smoothly through the head without catching.
5. Test the trimmer: Reconnect the power source (plug in electric models, insert the battery for cordless trimmers, or add gas for gas-powered units), then test the weed eater by pressing the throttle. If the line feeds correctly, you’re ready to trim. If the line does not feed or feeds unevenly, remove the spool and rewind it in the opposite direction, as you likely wound it the wrong way.

Comparison of Common Trimmer Line Types

Choosing the right trimmer line for your yard work will improve cutting performance and extend the life of your line. Use this comparison table to select the best option for your needs:

Tips for Perfect String Rolling Every Time

Follow these best practices to avoid common errors and get a perfectly wound spool every time you roll string on a weed eater:

• Always check your weed eater manual first: Different models have specific spool sizes, line gauge requirements, and winding directions. Using the wrong line or winding it incorrectly can damage your trimmer or cause poor performance.
• Wind the line tightly and evenly: Loose, uneven winding leads to line jams, tangles, and uneven feeding. Overlap each layer slightly as you wind to eliminate gaps.
• Don’t overfill the spool: Leaving 1/4 inch of space between the wound line and the spool edge ensures the cover fits properly and the line can feed freely without catching.
• Use the correct winding direction: Almost all spools are designed to be wound clockwise (when viewed from the front of the spool). Winding counterclockwise will cause the line to unravel as soon as you start the weed eater.
• Lubricate the line if you work in dusty or dry conditions: A small amount of trimmer line lubricant reduces friction between the line and the spool, prevents fraying, and extends the life of your line.
• Keep spare pre-wound spools on hand: If you have multiple weed eaters or do a lot of yard work, having pre-rolled spools ready means you can swap them out in seconds when a line runs out, no winding required mid-job.
• For bump-feed trimmers, leave 4–5 inches of line extending from the feed holes after installing the spool: This ensures the bump mechanism works correctly and releases line smoothly when you tap the head on the ground.
• Store extra trimmer line in a cool, dry place: Nylon line can become brittle and break easily if left in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, so keep unused line in a sealed container in your garage or shed to extend its shelf life.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced weed eater users make small errors when rolling string that can lead to poor performance, jams, or even damage to the tool. Avoid these common pitfalls:

1. Winding the line in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake. If you wind counterclockwise on a clockwise-designed spool, the line will unravel as soon as the trimmer head spins. Always check for the winding arrow on the spool, or test the line feed direction before winding by pulling the line through the head: it should pull out smoothly without resistance when you press the feed trigger.
2. Overfilling the spool: Piling line right up to the edge of the spool prevents the cover from fitting properly and causes the line to catch on the spool edge, leading to jams and uneven feeding. Stick to the 1/4 inch gap rule.
3. Using the wrong line gauge: Line that is too thick won’t fit through the feed holes in the trimmer head, while line that is too thin will slip and feed too quickly, leading to frequent jams and poor cutting performance. Check your manual for the exact gauge required for your model.
4. Skipping the spool cleaning step: Grass, dirt, and debris build up on the spool hub over time, which can cause the line to catch or the spool to sit crookedly in the trimmer head. Wipe the spool clean every time you replace the line to avoid this issue.
5. Not securing the line ends: If you don’t tuck the end of the line into the spool notch before reinstalling, the entire spool of line will unravel inside the trimmer head, leaving you with a tangled mess to fix before you can start trimming.
6. Using old, damaged line to refill the spool: If the existing line on your spool is frayed, brittle, or worn down, winding new line on top of it can cause tangles and uneven feeding. Always remove all old line before winding a fresh spool to ensure smooth operation.

When to Replace Your Trimmer Line

Even with proper winding and maintenance, trimmer line wears out over time and needs to be replaced. You’ll know it’s time to roll new line if you notice any of these signs:

• The line is frayed, split, or worn down to less than 2–3 inches in length.
• The line feeds unevenly or jams frequently even after adjusting the spool.
• The line breaks repeatedly when hitting small obstacles like rocks or sidewalk edges.
• You notice a significant drop in cutting performance, even with a full spool of line.

If you roll your own line, you don’t always need to replace the entire spool when the line wears down. Simply remove the spool, cut off the frayed ends of the line, and wind on new line to top it off, which saves you money and reduces waste. If you store your weed eater for extended periods, such as over the winter, remove the line from the spool before storage to prevent it from warping or becoming brittle in extreme temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any trimmer line for my weed eater?

No, you should always use the line gauge and type recommended by your weed eater’s manufacturer. Using line that is too thick can damage the trimmer head and motor, while line that is too thin will feed too quickly, jam frequently, and break easily when cutting tough vegetation. Check your user manual for the exact specifications, or look for the gauge printed on the old spool if you’re replacing it.

How much line should I wind on a spool?

Most standard weed eater spools hold between 10 and 20 feet of line, depending on the line gauge and spool size. The key rule is to leave a 1/4 inch gap between the top layer of wound line and the edge of the spool. Overfilling the spool prevents the cover from fitting properly and causes the line to catch, leading to jams and uneven feeding.

Why does my line keep unraveling when I use the weed eater?

This is almost always caused by winding the line in the wrong direction. Most spools are designed to be wound clockwise (when viewed from the front of the spool). If you wind counterclockwise, the line will unravel as soon as the trimmer head spins. It can also happen if you didn’t secure the end of the line in the spool notch before reinstalling the spool. To fix it, remove the spool, rewind the line in the correct direction, and make sure the end is tucked securely into the notch.

Can I roll string on a weed eater without removing the spool?

For most standard weed eaters, no – you need to remove the spool from the trimmer head to wind new line properly. Trying to wind line while the spool is still installed often leads to uneven winding, tangles, and line that doesn’t feed correctly. However, some “tap and go” weed eaters have a design that lets you feed new line through the head without removing the spool, but this only adds line to an existing spool, it doesn’t let you roll a full new spool from scratch.

How often should I roll new string on my weed eater?

This depends on how often you use your weed eater and the type of vegetation you’re cutting. For light residential use (trimming grass a few times a month), you’ll need to roll new line every 1–2 months. For heavy use (commercial landscaping, cutting thick brush weekly), you may need to replace or add line every few weeks. You’ll know it’s time when the line is worn down to less than 2–3 inches, frays easily, or cuts poorly.
