Introduction
Learning how to open weed eater string is a fundamental skill for anyone who maintains a yard with a string trimmer. The line lock, sometimes called the spool release, secures the cutting line during operation and must be disengaged before you can replace or adjust the line. While the exact mechanism varies between brands and models, the core steps remain consistent: power down the tool, remove the spool cover, release the lock, and then feed new line onto the spool. This guide walks you through every detail, from identifying your specific line‑lock type to troubleshooting common snags, so you can keep your trimmer running smoothly all season.

Understanding Weed Eater String Mechanism
Types of Spools
Most string trimmers use either a fixed‑spool or a bump‑feed spool. Fixed spools hold a pre‑measured length of line that you replace entirely when it wears out. Bump‑feed spools automatically advance line when you tap the head on the ground, but they still require you to open the spool housing to load fresh line. Knowing which style you have determines how you approach the line lock.
Line Lock Function
The line lock is a small mechanical latch that prevents the spool from rotating freely while the engine runs. It keeps the cutting line taut and prevents accidental unspooling. When you need to replace the line, you must disengage this lock—often by pressing a button, twisting a collar, or sliding a lever—so the spool can turn freely for line removal and re‑loading.
Tools and Safety Precautions
Before you start, gather a few basic items: a pair of work gloves, safety glasses, a clean rag, and the replacement line that matches your trimmer’s diameter (commonly .065‑.095 in). If your model uses a screw‑on spool cover, a Phillips or flat‑head screwdriver may be needed. Always disconnect the spark plug wire on gas models or remove the battery on cordless units to eliminate any chance of accidental startup. Work on a stable surface and keep the trimmer pointed away from you and bystanders.
Step‑by‑Step Guide to Open Weed Eater String
- Power off and disconnect. Turn the engine off, let it cool, then remove the spark plug wire or battery pack.
- Remove the spool cover. Locate the retaining tabs or screws on the trimmer head. Press the tabs inward or unscrew the cover and lift it away.
- Release the line lock. Identify the lock mechanism (push‑button, twist‑collar, or lever). Depress the button, rotate the collar counter‑clockwise, or slide the lever to the “unlock” position. You should feel the spool become free to rotate.
- Pull out the old line. Grasp the remaining line and unwind it from the spool. Discard any frayed or brittle sections.
- Inspect the spool and spring. Check for cracks, worn grooves, or a weakened return spring. Replace the spool if damage is evident.
- Load new line. Cut a length of line per the manufacturer’s spec (usually 10‑15 ft). Insert one end into the anchor hole, then wind the line evenly in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool. Keep tension consistent to avoid overlaps.
- Re‑engage the line lock. Once the line is wound, return the lock to its locked position—release the button, twist the collar clockwise, or slide the lever back.
- Reassemble and test. Snap or screw the spool cover back on, reconnect the spark plug or battery, start the trimmer, and tap the head lightly to verify proper line feed.
Common Types of Line Lock Mechanisms
Push‑Button Lock
Found on many residential models, a small recessed button on the spool housing releases the lock when pressed. It springs back automatically when you let go, making re‑locking effortless.
Twist‑Collar Lock
Common on professional‑grade trimmers, a knurled collar around the spool must be rotated a quarter turn to unlock. The tactile click confirms engagement.
Lever Lock
Some brands use a sliding lever on the side of the head. Pushing the lever forward unlocks; pulling it back locks. This design is robust and easy to operate with gloves.
Automatic Feed Lock
Bump‑feed heads often incorporate an internal centrifugal lock that disengages only when the head is tapped. Manual release is rarely needed, but a small access port may allow manual unlocking for maintenance.
Comparison Table: Line Lock Types
| Lock Type | Ease of Use | Durability | Typical Application | Manual Release Required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Push‑Button | Very Easy | Moderate | Homeowner / Light‑Duty | Yes |
| Twist‑Collar | Easy | High | Professional / Heavy‑Duty | Yes |
| Lever | Easy | High | Commercial / Wet Conditions | Yes |
| Automatic Feed | Automatic | Very High | Bump‑Feed Heads | Rarely |
Troubleshooting: When the Line Won’t Release
If the spool refuses to free‑spin after you actuate the lock, first verify that the lock truly moved to the unlocked position—listen for a click or feel for a detent. Debris such as grass clippings, dirt, or hardened line residue can jam the mechanism. Clean the lock area with a brush and compressed air. On twist‑collar models, ensure the collar isn’t cross‑threaded; back it out slightly and retry. For push‑button locks, the internal spring may have fatigued; a replacement spring kit is inexpensive and restores function. If the spool itself is cracked or the anchor hole is deformed, replace the entire spool assembly rather than forcing the lock.
Tips and Best Practices for Smooth Line Loading
- Use the exact line diameter specified in the owner’s manual; oversized line binds the spool, undersized line slips.
- Wind the line in the direction of the arrow on the spool—usually counter‑clockwise when viewed from the top.
- Keep the line under slight tension while winding to prevent loose loops that cause feeding problems.
- Trim the line ends at a 45° angle before inserting them into the anchor holes; this eases threading.
- Store spare line in a cool, dry place to prevent UV degradation and brittleness.
- Periodically lubricate the lock’s moving parts with a light silicone spray to maintain smooth operation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One frequent error is forcing the spool cover off without fully releasing the lock, which can strip the retaining tabs. Another is over‑filling the spool; excess line creates friction and prevents proper feed. Using mismatched line diameter leads to premature wear or breakage. Neglecting to disconnect the power source poses a serious safety hazard. Finally, skipping the inspection of the return spring can cause the line to retract unevenly, resulting in uneven cutting performance.
Maintenance Tips to Extend Spool Life
Regular cleaning of the trimmer head after each use removes abrasive grass particles that accelerate wear. Check the line lock for smooth action every few weeks during the cutting season. Replace the line before it becomes too short; running the trimmer with a stubby line forces the motor to work harder and can overheat the head. If you notice vibration or unusual noise, inspect the spool bearings (if equipped) and replace them as needed. Keeping the entire head assembly lubricated per the manufacturer’s schedule ensures consistent line release and prolongs the life of both the spool and the lock mechanism.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which line lock my trimmer uses?
Consult the owner’s manual or look at the trimmer head: a small recessed button indicates a push‑button lock, a knurled ring suggests a twist‑collar, and a sliding lever on the side points to a lever lock. Automatic feed heads usually lack an external manual release.
Can I use any brand of replacement line?
While many lines are interchangeable, you must match the diameter and shape (round, square, twisted) recommended by the manufacturer. Using the wrong spec can cause feeding issues or damage the spool.
Why does my line keep breaking after I reload it?
Common causes include winding the line in the wrong direction, over‑filling the spool, using brittle old line, or a damaged anchor hole. Verify each step and replace the spool if the anchor is cracked.
Is it necessary to replace the return spring every time I change line?
No. The spring typically lasts many line changes. Replace it only if you notice weak line retraction, uneven feed, or visible corrosion.
What should I do if the push‑button lock sticks?
Clean the button cavity with a small brush and compressed air, then apply a drop of light silicone lubricant. If it still sticks, the internal spring may be broken and the lock assembly should be replaced.
