Understanding Stihl Weed Eater String Types

Using the wrong string type or diameter for your Stihl model can lead to poor cutting performance, frequent string breakage, and even damage to your trimmer’s motor or spool head. Stihl engineers their trimmers to work optimally with specific string specifications, so sticking to their recommendations will ensure your tool lasts for years and performs at its best. There are three key factors to consider when choosing replacement string: material, shape, and diameter.

Round vs. Square vs. Star-Shaped String

Round string is the most common and most affordable option, designed for light residential use cutting grass, soft weeds, and edging along walkways and driveways. Its smooth surface creates less friction, so it’s quieter and puts less strain on the trimmer motor, making it ideal for small to medium-sized yards. Square string has sharp, serrated edges that slice through thick, tough vegetation like thistle, cattails, and light brush much more efficiently than round string. It’s the best choice for users with overgrown lots or who need to cut through dense weeds regularly. The downside of square string is that it’s louder during use and can damage soft surfaces like wood decking, vinyl fencing, or tree bark if you’re not careful. Star-shaped string is a middle-ground option, with a star cross-section that offers more durability than round string and less aggression than square string. It resists breaking on rocky terrain and is a great all-around choice for users who mix light cutting with occasional heavy-duty jobs.

String Diameter Sizing for Stihl Models

String diameter is measured in inches, and Stihl trimmers support a range of diameters depending on the model’s power and spool size. The most common diameters are .065″, .080″, .095″, and .105″. Thinner string (.065″) is best for lightweight residential trimmers, as it’s easy to cut through grass and puts minimal strain on the motor. Thicker string (.095″ and above) is designed for commercial-grade trimmers and brush cutters, as it can handle thick brush, small saplings, and rocky terrain without breaking. Using a string diameter thicker than your model’s maximum rating will overwork the engine, reduce battery life for cordless models, increase fuel consumption for gas models, and can cause the spool to jam. Always check your owner’s manual or the sticker on your trimmer head for the exact recommended diameter range for your specific model.

Tools You’ll Need for the Job

You don’t need any specialized power tools or expensive equipment to replace your Stihl weed eater string. Most of the tools you need are likely already in your household toolbox. For users who plan to replace their string frequently, a dedicated string winding tool is a worthwhile investment, as it reduces the time it takes to wind the spool and ensures even tension.

Essential Tools

• Replacement Stihl-compatible cutting string (correct diameter and type for your model)
• Sharp scissors or string cutter
• Work gloves (to protect your hands from sharp string edges)
• Flathead screwdriver (for models with a retaining ring holding the spool cover in place)

Optional Tools

• String winding tool (makes winding faster and more even, especially for beginners)
• Tape measure (to cut string to exact length)
• Small cleaning brush (to clear debris from the spool cavity before installation)

Preparing Your Stihl Weed Eater for String Replacement

Proper preparation before starting the string replacement process will keep you safe and make the job go smoothly. Skipping these steps can lead to accidental startup, injury, or damage to your trimmer.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

First, turn off the trimmer and disconnect the power source: remove the battery from cordless models, or disconnect the spark plug wire from gas-powered models to prevent accidental startup while you’re working. If you’re using a gas-powered Stihl trimmer, make sure the engine is completely cool before starting work, as a hot engine can cause burns. Wear work gloves at all times, as old, worn string often has sharp, frayed edges that can cut your skin. Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see the spool components and string holes.

Removing the Old Spool and String

1. Locate the spool cover on the bottom of the trimmer head. It is usually held in place by a small retaining ring or a twist-lock mechanism, depending on your model.
2. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry off the retaining ring, or twist the cover counterclockwise to release it. Be careful not to lose the small retaining ring, as it can fall out easily.
3. Pull the old spool out of the trimmer head, and set it aside.
4. Remove any remaining old string from the spool, and clear out all grass clippings, tangled string, and debris from the spool cavity using your cleaning brush or a dry cloth.
5. Inspect the spool for cracks, warping, or damage. If the spool is damaged, replace it with a new Stihl-compatible spool before installing new string, as a damaged spool will cause feeding issues even with new string.

Pro Spool Technique: Step-by-Step Installation

The pro spool technique is the industry-standard method for winding trimmer string, designed to eliminate tangles, ensure even feeding, and reduce string breakage. It works for all Stihl trimmers with manually wound spools, and takes just a few minutes to complete. Follow these steps for a perfect installation every time:

1. Cut the string to the correct length: For most Stihl trimmers, you’ll need two pieces of string (one for each side of a dual-line spool, or one long piece for single-line spools). Cut each piece to 1.5 to 2 times the length of the spool’s circumference. For a standard 10-inch spool, this is usually 10 to 12 feet per piece. Cut the ends straight with sharp scissors to ensure they fit neatly into the spool’s string holes.
2. Anchor the string in the spool holes: Turn the spool over to find the small holes at the center of each side (single-line spools have one hole per side, dual-line spools have two). Insert one end of each string piece into the hole, pulling it through until about 1 inch of string extends from the opposite side of the hole. This anchor point prevents the string from slipping out while you wind it.
3. Wind the string in the correct direction with even tension: This is the most critical step of the pro spool technique. Hold the spool in one hand, and the anchored end of the string in the other to keep tension. Wind the string clockwise (for most Stihl models; check your manual for confirmation) around the spool, keeping the string tight and side-by-side as you go. Do not overlap the string, as this will create thick spots that cause tangles and uneven feeding. Wind until the string is about 4 to 6 inches from the spool’s edge. If you are installing dual-line string, repeat this process for the second string, making sure both pieces are wound to the same length and tension.
4. Secure the string ends in the spool notches: Once you’ve wound the string to the correct length, tuck the loose ends into the small notches on the spool’s outer edge. These notches are designed to hold the string in place while you install the spool into the trimmer head, so the ends don’t unwind.
5. Install the spool into the trimmer head: Align the spool’s center hub with the trimmer head’s drive shaft, and slide the spool into place until it seats fully. Make sure the string ends are fed through the trimmer head’s eyelets (the small holes on the bottom of the head that the string feeds through to the cutting area).
6. Reattach the spool cover: Snap the retaining ring back into its groove, or twist the cover clockwise until it locks into place. Pull both string ends firmly to make sure they are seated correctly in the eyelets and the spool is secure.
7. Test the string feed: Reconnect the battery or spark plug, turn on the trimmer, and tap the trimmer head on the ground (the standard way to feed more string) to make sure the string feeds out evenly. If the string doesn’t feed, or feeds too much, double-check that you wound it in the correct direction and that the ends are secured in the notches.

Alternative Stringing Methods for Different Models

While the pro spool technique works for most Stihl trimmers, some newer and specialty models have simplified spool systems that don’t require manual winding. These options are great for users who want to save time or avoid the winding process entirely.

Semi-Automatic Spool Models

Models like the FS 56 RC and FSA 90 feature a bump-feed mechanism that releases more string when you tap the trimmer head on the ground. These models often use pre-wound replacement spools that are available from Stihl and authorized dealers. To install a pre-wound spool, simply remove the old spool, slide the new pre-wound spool into the trimmer head, feed the string ends through the eyelets, and reattach the cover. No winding is required, making replacement fast and easy, even for beginners. If you prefer to wind your own string for these models, you can still use the pro spool technique for better performance and lower long-term costs.

Automatic Feed Models

Some of Stihl’s latest cordless trimmers, like the FSA 45 and FSA 57, feature an automatic feed system that extends the string as soon as it contacts vegetation, with no need to tap the head. For these models, installation is nearly identical to standard models: remove the old spool, wind new string using the pro spool technique (or use a pre-wound spool), feed the ends through the eyelets, and reattach the cover. The automatic feed mechanism will handle the rest, delivering consistent cutting performance without any user input. For automatic feed models, it’s especially important to wind the string tightly and evenly, as loose winding can cause the feed mechanism to jam or feed too much string at once.

String Length and Sizing Guide for Stihl Models

Using the correct string length and diameter for your specific Stihl model is critical for optimal performance. Undersized string will break frequently, while oversized string will strain the motor and reduce runtime. The table below outlines the recommended specifications for common Stihl trimmer models, but always refer to your owner’s manual for exact requirements for your unit.

If you’re unsure what string diameter your model uses, you can find the information printed on a sticker on the trimmer head, or in the owner’s manual that came with your tool. For users who cut a mix of grass and thick weeds, a middle-of-the-range diameter (like .080″ for a mid-range trimmer) is usually the best all-around choice, as it balances durability and cutting power without overworking the motor.

Pro Tips for Longer String Life and Better Performance

With proper care and maintenance, your Stihl weed eater string can last for months, even with regular use. These pro tips will help you get the most out of your string and keep your trimmer performing at its best:

• Wind the string tightly and evenly: Loose winding causes tangles and uneven feeding, which leads to more breakage. Use a string winding tool if you struggle to keep tension while winding, as it holds the string in place and ensures even spacing.
• Avoid cutting near hard surfaces: Concrete, rocks, and gravel wear down string much faster than soft vegetation. If you’re working near these surfaces, use a thinner, more flexible string to reduce breakage, or adjust your cutting height to avoid contact with hard surfaces.
• Store spare string in a cool, dry place: Nylon string can become brittle if exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, which makes it more likely to break during use. Keep spare string in a sealed container in a garage or shed to protect it from the elements.
• Replace the entire spool of string at once: Don’t just add new string to old, worn string, as the old string will wear down the new string faster and cause uneven cutting. Remove all old string from the spool before installing new string to ensure consistent performance.
• Use Stihl-approved string only: Third-party string may be lower quality, have inconsistent diameter, or break more easily, leading to more frequent replacements and potential damage to your trimmer’s spool head or motor. Stihl’s branded string is engineered to work perfectly with their trimmers, and is worth the small extra cost for long-term reliability.
• Cut string with sharp tools for clean edges: Use a sharp pair of scissors or a dedicated string cutter to make clean, straight cuts. Jagged cuts cause the string to fray and break more quickly during use, so take an extra second to make a clean cut.
• Avoid leaving excess string hanging out of the head: The ideal length of string extending from the trimmer head is 4 to 6 inches for most residential models, and 6 to 8 inches for commercial models cutting thicker vegetation. Excess string creates drag, reduces cutting efficiency, and breaks more easily.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Stihl Weed Eater String

Even experienced users can make simple mistakes when installing new string that lead to tangles, poor performance, and frequent breakage. Avoid these common errors to make your installation process smooth and hassle-free:

• Winding the string in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake users make when learning How to Install Stihl Weed Eater String?. If you wind counterclockwise when the trimmer requires clockwise, the string will not feed properly when you tap the head, and will tangle constantly. Always check your owner’s manual for the correct winding direction for your specific model, or look for a small arrow printed on the spool itself that indicates the correct direction.
• Overlapping the string while winding: Overlapping creates thick spots on the spool that catch on the trimmer head’s eyelets, causing jams and breakage. Keep the string tight and side-by-side as you wind, with no overlaps between layers.
• Using string that’s too thick for your model: As mentioned earlier, oversized string strains the motor, reduces runtime, and can jam the spool. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended diameter range for your model to avoid these issues.
• Forgetting to secure the string ends in the spool notches: If you don’t tuck the ends into the notches before installing the spool, they will unwind while you’re fitting the spool into the trimmer head, leaving you with a tangled mess. Always double-check that the ends are secured before inserting the spool.
• Skipping the debris cleaning step: Old grass clippings, tangled string, and dirt left in the spool cavity can cause the new spool to sit unevenly or prevent the string from feeding properly. Take an extra 30 seconds to brush out the cavity before installing a new spool to avoid most feeding issues.
• Winding the string too loosely: Loose winding leads to slack in the string, which causes tangles and uneven feeding. Keep constant tension on the string as you wind to ensure it’s tight and evenly spaced around the spool.

Troubleshooting Common String Installation Issues

Even if you follow the pro spool technique perfectly, you may encounter occasional issues with your new string. These troubleshooting tips will help you resolve common problems quickly:

• String won’t feed when you tap the trimmer head: First, confirm that you wound the string in the correct direction for your model. If that’s correct, make sure the string ends are fed fully through the eyelets, and that the spool is seated all the way in the trimmer head. If the string is too tight, loosen it slightly by pulling a few inches out and re-securing the end in the notch.
• String feeds too much, or comes out in clumps: This is usually caused by overlapping string while winding, or winding the string too loosely. Remove the spool, unwind the string, and re-wind it tightly and evenly, with no overlaps, following the pro spool technique.
• String breaks constantly during use: First, confirm you’re using the correct string diameter for your model. If that’s correct, check that the string isn’t old or brittle (stored in extreme temperatures can cause this). Also, inspect the trimmer head’s eyelets for wear or damage; a cracked or worn eyelet can rub against the string and cause it to break prematurely. Replace the trimmer head if the eyelets are damaged.
• String tangles inside the spool: This is almost always caused by winding the string loosely, or not securing the ends in the notches before installation. Remove the spool, untangle the string, and re-wind it using the pro spool technique, keeping constant tension and securing the ends properly.
• String feeds unevenly (one side feeds more than the other on dual-line models): This is usually a sign that the two pieces of string are different lengths, or that one side is wound more tightly than the other. Remove the spool, adjust the length and tension of both strings to match, and reinstall. If the problem persists, check that both eyelets are clear of debris, as a blocked eyelet can prevent one side of the string from feeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my Stihl weed eater string?

The frequency of replacement depends on how often you use your trimmer and the type of vegetation you’re cutting. For light residential use (cutting grass and soft weeds a few times a month), you’ll need to replace the string every 3 to 6 months. For heavy commercial use, or if you’re cutting thick brush and weeds regularly, you may need to replace it every 1 to 2 months. You’ll know it’s time to replace the string when it becomes frayed, worn down to less than half its original diameter, or breaks frequently during use.

Can I use third-party string in my Stihl trimmer?

While you can use third-party string, Stihl recommends using their branded cutting string for optimal performance and to avoid damage to your trimmer. Third-party string often has inconsistent diameter, lower quality nylon, or sharp edges that can wear down the trimmer head’s eyelets faster, leading to more frequent repairs. If you do use third-party string, make sure it matches the exact diameter recommended for your model, and is made of high-quality nylon to reduce breakage.

How do I know if my spool is winding in the correct direction?

Most Stihl spools have a small arrow printed on the side that indicates the correct winding direction (usually clockwise). If there’s no arrow, check your owner’s manual for your specific model. As a general rule, most Stihl trimmers require clockwise winding, but some older or specialty models may use counterclockwise. If you wind the string in the wrong direction, the string will not feed properly when you tap the trimmer head, and will likely tangle constantly. If you’re unsure, wind a small test length of string and test the feed before winding the full spool.

Can I replace just one side of the string on a dual-line spool?

While it is possible to replace only one side of the string on a dual-line spool, Stihl recommends replacing both sides at the same time for even cutting performance. If one side is worn and the other is new, the trimmer will cut unevenly, and the new string will wear down faster as it takes on more of the cutting workload. If you only replace one side, make sure the new string is the same length and diameter as the existing side to maintain balance and avoid uneven feeding.

Why does my string keep breaking even after installing it correctly?

There are several possible reasons for frequent string breakage, even with correct installation. First, you may be using string that’s too thin for the type of vegetation you’re cutting, or a low-quality third-party string that breaks easily. Second, you may be cutting near hard surfaces like concrete or rocks, which wears down the string much faster than soft vegetation. Third, the trimmer head’s eyelets may be worn or damaged, causing the string to rub and break as it spins. Finally, the string may be old or stored in extreme temperatures, making it brittle. Replacing the trimmer head, using a thicker, higher-quality string for heavy-duty use, or avoiding hard surfaces can resolve this issue.

Conclusion
