What Is a Hunter Sprinkler System?

A Hunter sprinkler system is a complete irrigation setup designed to deliver consistent, efficient water to lawns, gardens, and commercial landscapes. The core component of any Hunter system is the controller, a wall-mounted device that acts as the brain of the operation, sending signals to individual sprinkler stations (valves that control groups of sprinkler heads) to open and close on a pre-programmed schedule.

Most Hunter controllers also include a manual run feature, which overrides the automatic schedule temporarily to let you run specific stations for a set amount of time on demand. This feature is built into every Hunter controller model released in the last 20 years, so even if you have an older system, you likely have access to manual operation. Understanding how to use this feature is a key part of maintaining your irrigation system, as it lets you address unexpected watering needs without disrupting your regular schedule.

Why Manually Run a Hunter Sprinkler System?

There are dozens of scenarios where running your Hunter system manually is far more practical than adjusting your automatic schedule. Some of the most common reasons homeowners and property managers use the manual run feature include:

• New seed or sod installation: New grass seed and sod require frequent, shallow watering to establish roots, which often doesn’t align with a standard deep-watering schedule. A manual run lets you water these areas multiple times a day without changing your entire weekly program.
• System testing after repairs: If you’ve replaced a sprinkler head, fixed a leak, or upgraded a valve, running a manual cycle lets you test each station to confirm it’s working properly before relying on your automatic schedule.
• Heatwave or drought adjustments: During extreme heat or dry spells, your grass and plants may need extra water beyond what your standard schedule provides. A manual run lets you add a quick 10-15 minute cycle to stressed areas without rewriting your entire watering program.
• Rain sensor override: If your Hunter system is connected to a rain sensor that shuts off watering during rainfall, you may need to run a manual cycle after a light rain that didn’t provide enough moisture for your plants. The manual run feature lets you bypass the rain sensor temporarily if needed.
• Seasonal adjustments: When seasons change, you may need to water more or less frequently for a short period. Instead of reprogramming your entire schedule, a manual run lets you add or remove watering cycles as needed until you’re ready to update your permanent schedule.
• Avoiding scheduled watering conflicts: If you’re hosting an event, having work done on your lawn, or need to keep an area dry for a few hours, you can run manual cycles at off-times to avoid conflicts with your regular schedule.

In all of these scenarios, knowing How to Run Hunter Sprinkler System Manually? saves you time, prevents water waste, and keeps your landscape healthy without complicated schedule edits.

Types of Hunter Controllers That Support Manual Runs

While all modern Hunter controllers support manual operation, the exact steps to activate the feature vary slightly depending on your model. The three most common Hunter controller types are outlined below, along with key details about their manual run functionality.

The Hunter X2 is the most popular residential Hunter controller, designed for home lawns and small landscapes with up to 12 stations. It has a simple button-based interface and a small LCD screen, making manual runs quick and easy to activate directly from the controller. The X2 also supports optional Wi-Fi modules for smart control, but manual runs can be activated without any smart features enabled.

The Hunter ICC2 is a commercial-grade controller built for larger properties, golf courses, and landscapes with 12 to 54 stations. It has a more robust interface, supports multiple programs, and includes advanced features like flow monitoring and station delay. Manual runs on the ICC2 can be activated for single stations or entire programs, making it ideal for large properties that need targeted watering.

Hunter’s Hydrawise line is a family of smart, Wi-Fi-enabled controllers that connect to the Hunter Hydrawise app for remote control and weather-based scheduling. All Hydrawise controllers support manual runs, which can be activated either directly on the controller or via the app from anywhere with an internet connection. This is the most convenient option for users who want to run their system manually without going outside to access the controller.

Pre-Run Checklist for Manual Operation

Before you activate a manual run, taking 5 minutes to complete this checklist will prevent common issues like overwatering, leaks, or non-functioning stations:

1. Confirm the controller is powered on: Check that the controller’s LCD screen is lit and displaying the correct time. If the screen is blank, check that the controller is plugged in (for indoor models) or that the transformer is connected to a power source (for outdoor models).
2. Verify the main water supply is open: Locate the shut-off valve for your irrigation system (usually near the backflow preventer) and confirm it is in the open position. A closed supply will prevent stations from turning on even if the controller sends a signal.
3. Inspect sprinkler heads for damage or clogs: Walk the area you plan to water and check that all sprinkler heads are upright, not broken, and free of debris. A clogged or damaged head will not spray properly during a manual run, leading to uneven watering.
4. Check the rain sensor setting: If your system has a rain sensor, confirm whether it is currently active. If it has rained recently and the sensor is triggered, you may need to bypass it temporarily to run a manual cycle, depending on your needs.
5. Clear the watering area: Make sure no people, pets, or objects are in the area you plan to water, to avoid slips, damage to belongings, or interference with sprinkler spray patterns.
6. Note your intended run times: Decide how long you want each station to run before starting. A good rule of thumb is 10-15 minutes for spray heads and 20-30 minutes for rotary heads, but adjust based on your soil type and plant needs.

Completing this checklist will ensure your manual run goes smoothly and delivers the water your landscape needs without waste or issues.

Step-by-Step Manual Run Instructions for All Hunter Controllers

The exact steps to activate a manual run vary depending on your Hunter controller model. Below are detailed instructions for the three most common controller types.

Standard Hunter X2 Controller Steps

The Hunter X2 is the most common residential controller, and its manual run feature is easy to activate with just a few button presses. Follow these steps to run your X2 system manually:

2. Navigate to the Manual Run menu: Press the Menu button on the controller until you see the “Manual Run” option on the LCD screen. Use the + and - buttons to scroll to the option if it is not immediately visible, then press Enter to select it.
3. Select the stations you want to run: The X2 will display a list of all your configured stations. Use the + and - buttons to highlight the first station you want to run, then press Enter to select it. Repeat this for each additional station you want to include in the manual cycle. You can select as few or as many stations as needed.
4. Set the run time for each station: After selecting a station, the screen will prompt you to enter a run time in minutes. Use the + and - buttons to adjust the time to your desired length, then press Enter to confirm. Repeat this for each selected station.
5. Start the manual cycle: Once all stations and run times are set, the screen will display a summary of your manual run. Press the Manual Run button (or the Enter button, depending on your model) to start the cycle. The first selected station will activate immediately, and the controller will move to the next station in your list once the first station’s run time is complete.
6. Return to automatic mode when finished: Once the manual cycle is complete, all stations will shut off automatically, and the controller will return to its normal automatic schedule. If you want to end the manual cycle early, press the Off button twice, then confirm you want to return to automatic mode.

If you have an X2 with a Wi-Fi module attached, you can also activate a manual run via the Hunter Hydrawise app for added convenience.

Hunter ICC2 Controller Steps

The Hunter ICC2 has a more advanced interface than the X2, but the process for activating a manual run is still straightforward. Follow these steps for ICC2 models:

1. Unlock the controller: If your ICC2 is locked, enter your 4-digit access code using the keypad. The default code is 0000 if you have not set a custom code.
2. Access the Manual Run menu: Press the Menu button until you see the “Manual” option on the screen. Use the navigation arrows to select it, then press Enter.
3. Choose between single station or program run: The ICC2 lets you run a single station manually, or run an entire pre-configured program manually. Use the navigation arrows to select your preferred option, then press Enter.
4. Select stations or program: If you selected single station run, use the navigation arrows to highlight the station you want to run, then press Enter. If you selected program run, choose the program you want to activate (Program A, B, or C) and press Enter.
5. Set run times: For single station runs, enter your desired run time in minutes using the keypad, then press Enter. For program runs, the controller will use the run times already programmed for that program’s stations.
6. Start the manual run: Confirm your settings on the summary screen, then press the Start button to activate the manual cycle. The selected station(s) will turn on immediately, and the controller will advance to the next station in the sequence when the run time is complete.
7. Return to automatic mode: Once the manual cycle finishes, the ICC2 will automatically return to its regular schedule. To end the cycle early, press the Off button, then select “Return to Auto” from the on-screen menu.

The ICC2’s ability to run full programs manually is particularly useful for commercial properties that need to water multiple zones in a specific sequence without adjusting their permanent schedule.

Hydrawise App Manual Run Steps

If you have a Hydrawise-enabled Hunter controller, you can activate a manual run directly from your smartphone or tablet, no need to go outside to access the physical controller. This is the most convenient option for running your system manually, especially if you’re away from home. Follow these steps to run your Hydrawise system manually via the app:

1. Open the Hunter Hydrawise app and log in to your account. Make sure your phone is connected to the internet, as the app communicates with your controller via Wi-Fi.
2. Select your controller from the list of devices on your account’s home screen.
3. Tap the “Manual Run” button on the controller’s main dashboard. This button is usually located at the bottom of the screen, marked with a play icon.
4. Select the stations you want to run: The app will display a list of all your configured stations. Tap the toggle next to each station you want to include in the manual cycle to select it.
5. Set run times for each station: Tap on each selected station to enter a custom run time in minutes. You can set different run times for each station based on their specific watering needs.
6. Start the manual run: Once all stations and run times are set, tap the “Start Manual Run” button at the bottom of the screen. The app will send a signal to your controller, and the selected stations will activate within a few seconds.
7. Monitor the run (optional): The app will show you the status of each station as it runs, and will send you a notification when the manual cycle is complete. You can also end the cycle early by tapping the “Stop” button on the dashboard.

One key benefit of using the Hydrawise app for manual runs is that the controller will still respect your rain sensor setting unless you explicitly override it in the app. This helps prevent accidental watering during rainfall, even when running manually.

Comparison: Manual Run vs. Automatic Scheduled Run

Many homeowners wonder when to use a manual run versus relying on their automatic schedule. The table below breaks down the key differences between the two options to help you choose the right one for your needs:

In general, you should rely on your automatic schedule for 90% of your watering needs, and use manual runs only for the special circumstances outlined earlier in this guide. This approach balances convenience with water efficiency, and helps keep your landscape healthy without unnecessary waste.

Tips and Best Practices for Successful Manual Runs

Follow these tips to get the most out of your Hunter system’s manual run feature, avoid common issues, and minimize water waste:

• Keep manual run times short: Avoid running any station manually for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Longer run times lead to water runoff, which wastes water and can cause erosion or pooling in your landscape. If your area needs more water, split the run time into two shorter cycles 30 minutes apart to allow water to soak into the soil.
• Check the weather first: Before starting a manual run, check the local forecast. If rain is expected in the next 24 hours, skip the manual run to avoid overwatering and save water.
• Test one station first: If you haven’t run the system manually in a while, start by running a single station for 2-3 minutes to confirm it’s working properly and there are no leaks or clogs before running a full cycle.
• Reset to automatic mode immediately after: As soon as your manual cycle is complete, return your controller to automatic mode. Forgetting to do this can cause the system to miss scheduled runs, leading to dry, stressed plants.
• Adjust run times based on season: In cooler months, reduce manual run times by 25-50% compared to summer, as cooler temperatures and higher humidity reduce water evaporation. In hot, dry months, you may need to increase run times slightly for stressed plants.
• Document manual runs: Keep a small notebook or digital note of when you run manual cycles, which stations you ran, and for how long. This helps you track your watering habits and avoid overwatering over time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Running Manually

Even experienced Hunter system users make these common mistakes when running their system manually. Avoiding them will save you time, money, and water:

• Overriding the rain sensor unnecessarily: If your rain sensor is triggered after a recent rain, do not bypass it to run a manual cycle unless you are certain your plants need extra water. Overriding the sensor can lead to overwatering, root rot, and increased water bills.
• Running stations during the hottest part of the day: Watering between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. leads to 30-50% more water loss due to evaporation. Always run manual cycles early in the morning (before 10 a.m.) or late in the evening (after 6 p.m.) to maximize water absorption.
• Forgetting to return to automatic mode: This is the most common mistake users make. Forgetting to switch back to automatic mode means your system will not run its scheduled cycles, leading to dry, unhealthy plants. Set a reminder on your phone if you have trouble remembering.
• Running damaged stations manually: If you know a sprinkler head is broken or a valve is leaking, do not run that station manually until you fix the issue. Running a damaged station can turn a small leak into a major flood, causing water damage to your lawn, foundation, or hardscaping.
• Setting run times too long: It’s easy to overestimate how long your landscape needs to be watered. Start with shorter run times (10-15 minutes for spray heads, 20-25 for rotary heads) and adjust based on how the soil feels 1-2 hours after watering. If the soil is soggy, reduce the run time; if it’s dry, increase it slightly.

Troubleshooting Common Manual Run Issues

If your manual run isn’t working as expected, use these troubleshooting steps to identify and fix the problem quickly:

• Stations won’t turn on during a manual run: First, confirm the controller is powered on and the main water supply is open. Next, check that the station is not disabled in your controller’s schedule. If you have a rain sensor, confirm it is not triggered (or bypassed if needed). If the issue persists, check for a blown fuse in the controller’s fuse box, or a tripped circuit breaker in your home’s electrical panel.
• Low water pressure when stations activate: Low pressure during a manual run is usually caused by a clogged filter in the backflow preventer or a partially closed shut-off valve. Turn off the water supply, remove the filter from the backflow preventer, and clean out any debris. Confirm the shut-off valve is fully open.
• Controller won’t enter manual run mode: If the controller is locked, enter your access code to unlock it. If the screen is frozen or unresponsive, unplug the controller (or turn off the circuit breaker) for 30 seconds, then plug it back in to reset it. If the issue persists, check the controller’s manual for model-specific reset instructions.
• Stations turn on but don’t spray: This is almost always caused by a clogged or damaged sprinkler head. Turn off the water supply, remove the head, and clean out any debris. If the head is cracked or broken, replace it with a matching Hunter model.
• Manual run stops halfway through the cycle: This is usually caused by a power outage or a loose connection between the controller and the valve. Confirm the controller is still powered on, and check that all wiring between the controller and valves is secure and undamaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run Hunter sprinklers manually without a controller?

Yes, you can run Hunter sprinklers manually without using the controller if you need to test a single station or water a small area. To do this, locate the manual bleed screw on the top of the valve for the station you want to run. Turn the screw counterclockwise ¼ to ½ turn to open the valve manually, which will activate the connected sprinkler heads. Turn the screw clockwise to close the valve and stop the water flow. This method is useful for quick tests or small watering tasks, but it does not let you run multiple stations in sequence like the controller’s manual run feature.

How long can I run a station manually?

There is no hard limit to how long you can run a station manually on a Hunter controller, but we recommend keeping run times under 30 minutes per station to avoid water runoff and waste. If your landscape needs more water, split the run time into two 15-minute cycles 30 minutes apart to allow water to soak into the soil fully. For new seed or sod, you may need to run stations for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day, which is safe as long as you monitor the soil moisture to avoid overwatering.

Will manual runs damage my sprinkler system?

No, manual runs will not damage your Hunter sprinkler system when used correctly. The manual run feature is a built-in, designed function of all Hunter controllers, and it operates the same valves and sprinkler heads as your automatic schedule. The only risk of damage comes from running a station with a broken or clogged sprinkler head, which can cause leaks or low pressure that may damage the valve over time. Always inspect your sprinkler heads before starting a manual run to avoid this issue.

Can I schedule a one-time manual run?

Yes, if you have a Hydrawise-enabled Hunter controller, you can schedule a one-time manual run via the Hydrawise app. To do this, open the app, select your controller, tap “Schedule,” then select “One-Time Run.” Choose the stations you want to run, set your desired run times, and select the date and time you want the cycle to start. The controller will run the cycle once at the scheduled time, then return to its normal automatic schedule. This feature is not available on standard X2 or ICC2 controllers without a Hydrawise module, but you can set a one-time reminder for yourself to activate a manual run at your desired time.

Why is my manual run not triggering stations?

If your manual run is not triggering stations, start by checking these common issues: first, confirm the controller is powered on and the main water supply is open. Next, check that the station is not disabled in your controller’s schedule, and that the rain sensor is not triggered (or bypassed if needed). If you have a smart controller, confirm it is connected to Wi-Fi and the app is showing an online status. If none of these fixes work, check for a blown fuse in the controller, a tripped circuit breaker, or loose wiring between the controller and the valve for the affected station. If you still can’t resolve the issue, contact Hunter customer support or a local irrigation professional for assistance.
