Understanding Sprinkler Heads
Sprinkler heads are the final delivery point of an irrigation system. They convert pressurized water into a controlled spray pattern that covers a specific area. The performance of a head depends on its design, pressure rating, and the nozzle installed. A mismatched head can cause dry spots, overspray onto hardscapes, or excessive water use. Before you begin any replacement, identify the existing head’s model number, thread size, and spray characteristics. This information is usually stamped on the body or printed on the original packaging.
Types of Sprinkler Heads
There are three primary categories used in residential and light commercial systems:
- Fixed spray heads – Emit a constant fan‑shaped pattern. Ideal for small, rectangular zones such as flower beds or narrow lawns.
- Rotary (gear‑drive) heads – Rotate slowly, delivering a single stream that covers a larger radius. Best for medium to large open areas.
- Impact (impulse) heads – Use a swinging arm to break the water stream into a pulsating spray. Durable and tolerant of dirty water, often used on larger commercial sites.
Each type comes in multiple arc settings (e.g., 90°, 180°, 360°) and radius options. Selecting the correct combination ensures even coverage without waste.
Choosing the Right Head
Match the replacement head to the zone’s layout and the system’s pressure. Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet for the recommended operating pressure range (typically 30–50 psi for residential heads). If the zone pressure is low, a low‑pressure head or a pressure‑regulating nozzle may be required. Also consider the precipitation rate: heads in the same zone should have similar rates to avoid over‑ or under‑watering. When upgrading to a more efficient model, verify that the new head’s flow rate (gallons per minute) is compatible with the zone’s valve and pipe sizing.
Tools and Materials Needed
Gather the following items before you start. Having everything on hand prevents interruptions and reduces the chance of damaging components.
- Adjustable wrench or slip‑joint pliers (size to fit the head’s hex nut)
- Pipe thread sealant tape (PTFE) or liquid thread sealant
- Small bucket or towel to catch residual water
- New sprinkler head (matching thread size, arc, and radius)
- Nozzle installation tool (if the head uses a removable nozzle)
- Pressure gauge (optional, for verifying zone pressure)
- Protective gloves and safety glasses
Preparing the System
Proper preparation protects both the irrigation components and the installer. Follow these steps before removing any hardware.
- Shut off the water supply. Locate the main irrigation valve or the zone valve feeding the head and turn it clockwise until fully closed.
- Relieve pressure. Open a downstream valve or manually activate the zone from the controller for a few seconds. This drains water from the line and prevents a sudden spray when the head is unscrewed.
- Mark the head’s orientation. Use a piece of tape or a marker to note the current arc setting and direction. This makes re‑alignment faster after installation.
- Clear the area. Remove mulch, grass, or debris around the head to give yourself ample working space.
Step‑by‑Step Installation Guide
The following ordered list details the complete process for a typical threaded sprinkler head replacement. Adapt the steps if your system uses a quick‑connect or push‑fit fitting.
- Remove the old head. Place the wrench on the hex nut at the base of the head. Turn counter‑clockwise until the head loosens. Pull the head straight up; expect a small amount of water to escape.
- Inspect the threads. Examine the male threads on the riser and the female threads inside the head. Clean any debris, mineral buildup, or old tape with a wire brush or cloth.
- Apply thread sealant. Wrap PTFE tape clockwise around the male threads three to four times, or apply a thin bead of liquid sealant. Avoid over‑wrapping, which can prevent proper seating.
- Install the new head. Align the head’s inlet with the riser threads. Hand‑tighten clockwise until snug, then give a final quarter turn with the wrench. Do not overtighten; excessive force can crack the plastic body.
- Set the arc and radius. Most heads have an adjustable collar or a set screw. Rotate the collar to the desired arc (e.g., 180° for a half‑circle) and tighten the set screw. Adjust the radius by turning the nozzle or using the radius adjustment screw, following the manufacturer’s chart.
- Re‑pressurize the zone. Slowly open the zone valve. Watch for leaks at the base of the new head. If a leak appears, tighten the head an additional eighth turn.
- Test the spray pattern. Run the zone for a full cycle. Verify that the spray reaches the intended coverage area, that there is no overspray onto sidewalks, and that adjacent heads overlap correctly.
- Finalize and backfill. Replace any mulch or sod removed earlier. Secure the head’s position with soil if it has a stake base.
Sprinkler Head Comparison
| Feature | Fixed Spray | Rotary (Gear‑Drive) | Impact (Impulse) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Radius | 4–15 ft | 15–35 ft | 20–45 ft |
| Precipitation Rate | High (1.5–2.5 in/hr) | Medium (0.5–1.5 in/hr) | Low to Medium (0.4–1.2 in/hr) |
| Best Use | Small beds, narrow strips | Medium lawns, parks | Large fields, dirty water |
| Maintenance Frequency | Low | Medium (gear wear) | Low (robust mechanism) |
| Cost Range (per head) | $2–$6 | $8–$20 | $12–$30 |
Adjusting Sprinkler Head Settings
After installation, fine‑tuning the head ensures optimal coverage. Most modern heads allow two independent adjustments:
- Arc adjustment – Controls the sweep angle. Set to 90° for corner heads, 180° for edge heads, and 360° for center heads.
- Radius (distance) adjustment – Changes the throw distance. Turn the radius screw clockwise to reduce distance, counter‑clockwise to increase. Make small increments and re‑test after each change.
Use a catch‑can test to verify precipitation rates across the zone. Place several cans in a grid, run the zone for a set time, then measure the water depth. Adjust heads until all cans collect a similar amount.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced DIYers can slip up. Awareness of these pitfalls helps you achieve a leak‑free, uniform installation.
- Forgetting to shut off the water. This leads to a sudden geyser and possible injury.
- Over‑tightening the head. Plastic bodies crack, causing permanent leaks.
- Using the wrong thread sealant. Pipe dope on plastic threads can degrade the material; PTFE tape is safer.
- Mismatching precipitation rates. Mixing high‑ and low‑rate heads in one zone creates dry or soggy spots.
- Neglecting to re‑align the arc. The head may spray onto hardscape or miss the target area.
- Skipping the pressure check. Excessive pressure can blow out nozzles; low pressure yields poor coverage.
Maintenance Tips
Regular upkeep extends the life of every sprinkler head and keeps the system efficient.
- Inspect heads at the start of each watering season for clogged nozzles, cracked bodies, or misaligned arcs.
- Clean nozzles with a soft brush or a pin; avoid metal tools that can enlarge the orifice.
- Flush the system annually by opening the end‑of‑line drain valves to remove sediment.
- Replace worn seals or O‑rings during head replacement; they are inexpensive and prevent leaks.
- Adjust the controller schedule seasonally to match evapotranspiration rates, reducing unnecessary run time.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If the new head does not perform as expected, run through this quick diagnostic checklist.
- No water flow. Verify the zone valve is fully open and the controller has the zone programmed.
- Weak or uneven spray. Check for a clogged nozzle, low zone pressure, or a partially closed valve.
- Leak at the base. Re‑apply thread sealant and ensure the head is seated squarely on the riser.
- Head rotates but does not change arc. The arc adjustment screw may be stripped; replace the head if the mechanism is damaged.
- Water hammer noise. Install a pressure‑regulating valve or a water‑hammer arrestor on the main line.
Frequently Asked Questions
What tools do I need?
You need an adjustable wrench or slip‑joint pliers, PTFE tape or liquid thread sealant, a bucket or towel, the replacement head, and optionally a pressure gauge. Gloves and safety glasses are recommended.
Can I install a head without turning off the main water?
It is strongly discouraged. Even if the zone valve is closed, residual pressure can cause a sudden spray when the head is removed. Always shut off the water and relieve pressure first.
How do I know which arc setting to use?
Match the arc to the head’s position in the zone. Corner heads typically use 90°, edge heads 180°, and center heads 360°. Refer to the original system design or the manufacturer’s layout guide.
Why is my new head leaking at the base?
A leak usually indicates insufficient thread sealant, cross‑threaded installation, or a cracked head body. Remove the head, clean the threads, re‑apply PTFE tape, and reinstall carefully.
How often should I replace sprinkler heads?
Most residential heads last 5–10 years. Replace them when you notice cracked bodies, worn nozzles, inconsistent spray patterns, or after a major system redesign.
