How to Raise Lawn Sprinkler Heads? Raise Lawn Heads for Even Watering

Introduction

If you’ve noticed uneven green patches, dry brown spots, or water spraying onto your patio instead of your lawn, the culprit is likely low sprinkler heads. Over time, soil settles, turf grows, and initial installation errors can leave sprinkler heads buried too far below the surface, leading to poor coverage and wasted water. The good news is that learning how to raise lawn sprinkler heads is a simple, low-cost DIY task that takes less than 15 minutes per head, no professional plumbing experience required. This comprehensive guide will walk you through every step of the process, from identifying if your heads need raising to adjusting different head types, avoiding common mistakes, and maintaining your system for even watering all season long.

Why Do Lawn Sprinkler Heads Need Raising?

Proper sprinkler head height is critical for efficient, even lawn watering. When heads are installed too low or sink over time, they can’t distribute water across the full area they’re designed to cover. This leads to dry, under-watered spots that require extra watering to fix, increasing your water bill and stressing your grass. Raising your heads to the correct height ensures water lands where it’s needed, reduces runoff and evaporation, and keeps your lawn healthy with minimal effort.

Common Causes of Low Sprinkler Heads

There are four primary reasons sprinkler heads end up too low, many of which are unavoidable over time:

• Soil settlement: After installation, the soil around the sprinkler riser pipe compacts over time, especially after heavy rain or frequent irrigation, causing the head to sink lower than its original installation height.
• Turfgrass growth: As your lawn grows, you add layers of clippings and topsoil over time, raising the ground level around the sprinkler head until it’s partially or fully buried.
• Incorrect initial installation: If the installer set the head too low to avoid mower damage, it may never have been at the correct height for your lawn’s grass type and mowing schedule.
• Lawn maintenance activities: Aeration, topdressing with compost or soil, and overseeding can add a ¼ to ½ inch layer of material over your sprinkler heads, lowering their effective height over time.

Signs Your Sprinkler Heads Are Too Low

It’s easy to overlook low sprinkler heads until you start seeing visible damage to your lawn. Watch for these five key signs that your heads need to be raised:

1. Dry, uneven patches: If certain areas of your lawn stay brown and crispy even after regular watering, the sprinkler head covering that area is likely too low to spray water far enough to reach the edges of its coverage zone.
2. Buried heads: If you can’t see the top of your sprinkler heads when the lawn is dry, or if you have to dig through grass to find them, they’re too low and need to be raised immediately to avoid damage from mowers and foot traffic.
3. Water hitting obstacles: If you notice water spraying onto your sidewalk, patio, garden beds, or fence instead of the lawn, the head is too low to clear the obstacle.
4. Increased water bills: If your water bill has gone up without any change in your watering schedule, low heads may be causing water to spray into the ground or onto non-lawn areas, wasting water and requiring you to run the system longer to cover the dry spots.
5. Erosion around the head base: If you see small gullies or muddy spots around the base of a sprinkler head, the head is spraying water at a low angle directly into the soil, causing erosion over time.

Types of Lawn Sprinkler Heads That Can Be Raised

Most residential sprinkler heads can be raised with simple adjustments or inexpensive parts, but the process varies slightly by head type. The table below compares the most common types of sprinkler heads, their typical raise range, ease of adjustment, and associated costs. After the table, we’ll break down how to adjust each type specifically.

Pop-up spray heads are the most common choice for residential lawns, as they retract flush with the ground when not in use, so they don’t obstruct mowing. Gear-driven rotor heads are better for larger lawn areas, as they rotate slowly to cover wide zones with less water waste. Impact sprinkler heads are durable, low-cost options often found in older sprinkler systems, and fixed spray heads are used for small, targeted areas like garden beds or narrow strips of lawn.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need to Raise Lawn Sprinkler Heads

Before you start adjusting your sprinkler heads, gather these simple tools and materials, all of which are available at most local hardware stores for less than $20 total:

• Sprinkler head adjustment tool or small flathead screwdriver: Most pop-up and gear-driven heads have a small adjustment screw on top that requires a flathead screwdriver, while some models use a specialized plastic adjustment tool that fits over the head for easier turning.
• Teflon tape: Also called plumber’s tape, this is used to seal threaded connections on the riser pipe to prevent leaks after you remove or reattach the head.
• Sprinkler head extension kit: If you need to raise a head more than ½ inch, you’ll need a threaded riser extension that screws between the existing riser pipe and the sprinkler head. Extensions come in 1, 2, and 3 inch lengths to fit different needs.
• Small trowel or hand shovel: If your heads are buried under soil or thick grass, you’ll need a small digging tool to expose the base of the head without damaging the underlying pipe.
• Bucket of soapy water: After adjusting the head, you can use this to check for leaks at the base of the head. If you see bubbles forming when the system is on, that indicates a leak at the threaded connection.
• Work gloves: Protect your hands from dirt, sharp grass edges, and rusty pipe threads while you work.

Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Sprinkler Heads

Follow these general prep steps first, then use the type-specific instructions below to adjust your specific sprinkler heads correctly.

1. Turn off your sprinkler system at the main control valve. This prevents water from spraying out unexpectedly while you’re working, which can soak your clothes and make it hard to see the adjustment mechanisms. If your system has a backflow preventer, make sure it’s also turned off to avoid water flowing back into your home’s plumbing.
2. Locate the sprinkler head you need to raise. If it’s buried under grass or soil, use a small trowel to carefully dig around the base of the head, exposing the top of the head and 2–3 inches of the riser pipe below it. Be careful not to dig too deep, as you could damage the underground pipe or the electric valve wiring if your system has it.
3. Brush away any dirt, grass clippings, or debris from the top of the sprinkler head so you can clearly see the adjustment screw or set screw. Use a dry cloth if the head is wet to avoid slipping while turning the screw.
4. Test the current height by turning the system on briefly (if you can do so without creating a mess) to observe the spray pattern. Note if the water is hitting obstacles, not reaching the edges of the coverage area, or spraying into the ground. Turn the system off again before making any adjustments.

Adjusting Pop-Up Spray Heads

Pop-up spray heads are the most common type in residential lawns, and they’re also the easiest to adjust. Follow these steps to raise them:

1. Locate the small adjustment screw on the top of the sprinkler head. It’s usually a slotted screw in the center of the nozzle, surrounded by a plastic ring that controls the spray radius.
2. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the specialized sprinkler adjustment tool to turn the screw clockwise to raise the spray height, or counterclockwise to lower it. Turn the screw in 1/8 turn increments to avoid over-adjusting. Each full turn of the screw will raise or lower the head by approximately ¼ inch.
3. If you need to raise the head more than ½ inch, the built-in adjustment won’t be enough. In this case, you’ll need to install a riser extension. First, unscrew the entire sprinkler head from the top of the riser pipe. Wrap the threads of the riser pipe with 2–3 wraps of Teflon tape to create a watertight seal. Screw the riser extension onto the riser pipe by hand, then tighten it with a wrench (don’t over-tighten, as this can crack the plastic pipe). Finally, screw the sprinkler head onto the top of the extension and tighten it gently.
4. Test the adjustment by turning the system on briefly. Check that the water is spraying evenly across the coverage area, not hitting obstacles, and that the head retracts fully when the system turns off. Make small additional adjustments if needed.

Raising Gear-Driven Rotor Heads

Gear-driven rotor heads are used for larger lawn areas, as they rotate slowly to cover wide zones with less water waste. They have a slightly more complex adjustment mechanism than pop-up heads:

1. Locate the small set screw on the side of the rotor head body, usually near the base where the head meets the riser pipe. You’ll need a small Allen wrench (usually 1/8 or 3/32 inch) to loosen it.
2. Loosen the set screw just enough so the head can move up and down freely. Gently pull the head up to your desired height, then tighten the set screw to lock it in place. Don’t pull the head up more than 1 inch above the riser pipe, as this can make it unstable.
3. If the head is still too low even at maximum pop-up height, install a riser extension as described in the pop-up head section. Make sure to use Teflon tape on the riser threads to prevent leaks.
4. Test the head by running the system, checking that it rotates fully across its coverage arc and that the spray pattern is even. Raising the head can sometimes shift the spray arc, so you may need to adjust the arc setting screw as well if the water is missing parts of the lawn.

Adjusting Impact Sprinkler Heads

Impact sprinkler heads are the classic hammer-style heads often found in older residential systems, and they’re known for their durability and low cost. To raise them:

1. Locate the small adjustment nut on the base of the impact head, where it connects to the riser pipe. This nut controls how high the head pops up when the system is on.
2. Use a small wrench to loosen the nut, then gently pull the head up to your desired height. Tighten the nut securely to lock the head in place. Don’t over-tighten the nut, as this can strip the threads on the riser pipe.
3. If the riser pipe is too short to raise the head to the correct height, install a threaded riser extension between the pipe and the head. Wrap the threads of the riser and the extension with Teflon tape, then screw them together tightly.
4. Test the head by running the system, making sure the impact mechanism still strikes correctly to rotate the head, and that the spray pattern is even across the coverage area.

How to Adjust Sprinkler Head Height Without Replacement

Many homeowners assume they need to replace low sprinkler heads entirely, but in most cases, you can raise them without spending money on new parts. First, always try adjusting the built-in height mechanism on the head first – most modern heads have ½ to 1 inch of built-in adjustability that’s designed for minor height changes. If the built-in adjustment isn’t enough, a riser extension is a cheap, easy fix that costs $2–$5 per extension, and works for almost all head types.

You only need to replace the entire head if it’s cracked, broken, the adjustment mechanism is stripped, or you need to raise it more than 4 inches (which is rare for residential lawns). If you do need to replace a head, opt for a “tall-pop” or “low-profile” model designed for your lawn’s grass type and mowing height, which will reduce the need for frequent adjustments in the future.

Best Practices for Long-Lasting Sprinkler Head Adjustment

Follow these tips to keep your sprinkler heads at the correct height and avoid common issues:

• Make small adjustments: Never turn an adjustment screw more than 1/8 turn at a time, and test the spray pattern after each adjustment. Over-raising a head can cause it to stick in the up position, get damaged by mowers, or break the internal spring.
• Use Teflon tape on all threaded connections: Even a small leak at the base of a sprinkler head can waste up to 300 gallons of water per month, and cause soggy, muddy spots in your lawn. Wrapping threads with Teflon tape creates a watertight seal that prevents leaks.
• Check head height annually: Soil settles and turf grows every year, so check your sprinkler heads in early spring before the growing season starts. Adjust any heads that are too low before the hot summer months, when your lawn needs consistent watering the most.
• Match head height to your mowing height: The top of the sprinkler head should be flush with or 1/8 inch below the top of your grass when it’s at your regular mowing height. Raising heads too high will cause them to get damaged by mower blades, while leaving them too low will lead to poor coverage.
• Clean heads regularly: Dirt, grass clippings, and debris can get stuck in the adjustment screw or pop-up mechanism, making it hard to adjust the height. Flush each head with water or blow it out with compressed air every 3–4 months to keep the mechanism working smoothly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Raising Sprinkler Heads

Even a simple DIY task like raising sprinkler heads can lead to bigger problems if you make these common errors:

1. Over-tightening screws and nuts: Stripping the threads on an adjustment screw, set screw, or riser pipe will require you to replace the entire head or pipe section, which is far more expensive than a simple adjustment. Tighten all screws and nuts just enough to hold the head in place – you should be able to loosen them with a screwdriver or wrench without excessive force.
2. Digging too deep around the head: If you dig more than 3–4 inches below the head, you risk damaging the underground riser pipe or the electric valve wiring for your sprinkler system. Stick to a small digging area just around the base of the head, and use a small hand trowel instead of a large shovel to avoid accidental damage.
3. Skipping the leak test: After adjusting or raising a head, turn the system on and check the base of the head for leaks. If you see water pooling around the base or bubbling up from the soil, turn the system off immediately and tighten the threaded connection, or add more Teflon tape. Ignoring small leaks can lead to water waste, soggy lawn spots, and even water damage to your home’s foundation if the leak is near a building.
4. Raising heads too high: Heads that stick up more than 1/8 inch above the grass will get damaged by lawn mowers, foot traffic, and pets. A damaged head will either stop popping up entirely or spray water erratically, requiring you to replace it. Always test the height by walking over the area or running your mower over it (with the system off) to make sure the head is protected.
5. Using the wrong size riser extension: Riser extensions come in different thread sizes to fit different head and pipe types. Using an extension with the wrong thread size will cause leaks or make the head wobbly and unstable. Check the thread size of your existing riser pipe before buying an extension, or bring the old head to the hardware store to match it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to raise my lawn sprinkler heads?

Most homeowners need to check and adjust their sprinkler head height once a year, in early spring before the growing season starts. If you have fast-growing turf, live in an area with heavy soil that settles a lot, or regularly topdress your lawn with compost or soil, you may need to adjust them every 6 months. Regular checks will keep your watering even and prevent dry spots.

Can I raise lawn sprinkler heads myself, or do I need a professional?

Raising most residential sprinkler heads is a simple DIY task that takes 10–15 minutes per head, and requires no special skills. You only need to hire a professional if you have a large commercial system, multiple heads that are severely buried, or if you’re uncomfortable working with your sprinkler system’s plumbing. For most homeowners, DIY raising will save you $50–$100 per head compared to hiring a pro.

What if my sprinkler head won’t stay raised?

If your head pops up but immediately falls back down, the issue is usually a worn spring inside the head, or debris stuck in the pop-up mechanism. First, try flushing the head with water to remove any dirt. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to replace the head with a new one, which costs $5–$20 depending on the type. If you just raised the head and it won’t stay up, make sure you tightened the set screw or adjustment nut securely.

Will raising my sprinkler heads increase water pressure?

Raising the heads themselves will not change your system’s overall water pressure, but it can improve the efficiency of the water you’re already using. If your heads were too low, water was spraying into the ground or hitting obstacles, so raising them will make sure the water is going where it’s needed, which can lower your water bills by 10–20% over time. If you have low pressure across your entire system, you may need to adjust your pressure regulator or clean out clogged nozzles, but that’s a separate issue from head height.

How much can I raise a sprinkler head without replacing it?

Most sprinkler heads have ½ to 1 inch of built-in adjustability, so you can raise them that much without any extra parts. If you need to raise them more than 1 inch, you’ll need to install a riser extension, which is available in 1, 2, and 3 inch lengths at most hardware stores. You can raise a head up to 4 inches total with extensions, but if you need to raise it more than that, it’s usually easier and more stable to replace the entire head with a taller model.

Conclusion

Uneven watering from low sprinkler heads is a common, easy-to-fix issue that doesn’t require professional help. By following the step-by-step guide for how to raise lawn sprinkler heads, you can eliminate dry spots, reduce water waste, and keep your lawn lush and green all season. Remember to check your head height annually, make small adjustments, and test for leaks after each change. With a few simple tools and 15 minutes per head, you can have your sprinkler system working as efficiently as the day it was installed, saving you time, money, and water for years to come.
