How Do You Blowout a Sprinkler System? Easy Winterization Steps

Introduction

Winterizing an irrigation system is one of the most important maintenance tasks a homeowner can perform before the first hard freeze. If water remains in the pipes, valves, or sprinkler heads, it expands as it turns to ice and can cause costly cracks, burst fittings, and damaged backflow preventers. The most reliable way to remove that water is the blowout method, which uses compressed air to push every last drop out of the system. This guide answers the question How Do You Blowout a Sprinkler System? with a complete, step‑by‑step walkthrough, safety tips, equipment recommendations, and a comparison of alternative winterization techniques so you can choose the best approach for your property.

Why Winterize Your Sprinkler System

Water left in an irrigation network freezes at 32 °F (0 °C). When it freezes, it expands roughly nine percent in volume, generating enough pressure to split PVC pipe, crack brass valves, and rupture polyethylene tubing. Even a small amount of trapped water can cause a cascade of damage that may not be discovered until spring, when you turn the system on and find leaks, low pressure, or non‑functioning zones. Proper winterization eliminates that risk, extends the lifespan of every component, and saves you the expense of emergency repairs or a full system replacement. In regions with prolonged sub‑freezing temperatures, most municipalities and homeowners‑association guidelines require a documented blowout or equivalent method before the first freeze.

Understanding the Blowout Method

The blowout method relies on a high‑volume, low‑pressure air stream to push water out of every pipe, valve, and sprinkler head. Unlike a simple drain, which depends on gravity and can leave water in low spots, compressed air forces water through the entire circuit, including the backflow preventer, zone valves, and the farthest heads. The key parameters are airflow (cubic feet per minute, CFM) and pressure (pounds per square inch, PSI). Most residential systems require 50–80 CFM at 40–50 PSI. Too much pressure can damage sprinkler heads and fittings; too little airflow will stall before the farthest zone clears. The process is typically performed zone by zone, starting with the zone farthest from the compressor connection and working back toward the source.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following items. Having everything on hand prevents interruptions that could leave a zone partially blown out.

• Air compressor rated at least 50 CFM @ 90 PSI (portable gas‑engine or large electric unit)
• Air hose with a ¾‑inch or 1‑inch quick‑connect fitting to match your system’s blowout port
• Pressure regulator (adjustable, 0–60 PSI) to protect heads
• Blowout adapter or “blowout plug” that fits the system’s test port or backflow preventer
• Adjustable wrench or pipe wrench for tightening connections
• Safety glasses and hearing protection
• Gloves (nitrile or leather) for handling cold metal
• Bucket or towel for any residual water
• System map or controller schedule to identify zone order

Safety Precautions

Compressed air stores a tremendous amount of energy. Follow these precautions every time you perform a blowout:

• Wear safety glasses and hearing protection; a sudden hose rupture can cause serious eye or ear injury.
• Never exceed 50 PSI at the sprinkler heads. Use a regulator and verify pressure with a gauge.
• Secure all hose connections with clamps or quick‑connect locks to prevent whipping.
• Keep bystanders, pets, and children at least 20 feet away from the work area.
• Do not stand directly over a sprinkler head while it is blowing out; water and debris can eject at high velocity.
• Shut off the main water supply and relieve system pressure before attaching the compressor.
• If you smell gasoline or see fuel leaks on a gas‑engine compressor, stop immediately and ventilate the area.

Step‑by‑Step Blowout Procedure

1. Shut off the water supply. Locate the main irrigation shut‑off valve (often near the water meter or backflow preventer) and turn it clockwise until fully closed.
2. Depressurize the system. Open a manual drain valve or the lowest sprinkler head to let any residual pressure escape.
3. Connect the compressor. Attach the blowout adapter to the system’s designated blowout port (usually on the backflow preventer or a dedicated test cock). Connect the regulated air hose to the adapter, ensuring a tight seal.
4. Set the regulator. Adjust the regulator to 40–45 PSI. Verify with an inline pressure gauge.
5. Start the compressor. Allow the compressor to build full tank pressure, then open the hose valve slowly to avoid a pressure spike.
6. Activate the farthest zone first. Using the controller, manually run the zone farthest from the compressor connection. Let it run until only a fine mist or no water exits the heads, typically 2–3 minutes.
7. Move to the next zone. Turn off the current zone, then activate the next zone toward the compressor. Repeat until all zones have been blown out.
8. Blow out the main line. After the last zone, run the compressor with all zones off for an additional minute to clear any remaining water in the main supply line.
9. Shut down the compressor. Close the hose valve, turn off the compressor, and disconnect the hose and adapter.
10. Close all drain points. Re‑close any manual drain valves you opened in step 2.
11. Inspect for leaks. Walk the property and verify that no water is dripping from heads, valves, or the backflow preventer.
12. Document the service. Record the date, compressor specs, and any observations for future reference or warranty purposes.

Choosing the Right Air Compressor

Not every compressor can deliver the sustained airflow a sprinkler blowout demands. A typical residential system with 8–12 zones needs at least 50 CFM at 90 PSI tank pressure. Portable gas‑engine compressors (often 10–15 HP) are the most common choice for DIYers because they provide high CFM without requiring a 240‑volt circuit. Large stationary electric compressors (5 HP or greater) can also work if they meet the CFM rating. Avoid small “pancake” or “hot dog” compressors rated under 5 CFM; they will stall, leaving water in the lines. When renting, confirm the CFM rating at 90 PSI, not just the tank size. A compressor with an integrated regulator and moisture trap simplifies setup and protects the irrigation components from oil or water contamination.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced DIYers can make errors that compromise the blowout. The most frequent mistakes include:

• Exceeding 50 PSI at the heads. This can blow off nozzles, crack plastic bodies, or damage the backflow preventer. Always use a regulator and verify pressure.
• Skipping the farthest zone first. Starting near the compressor leaves water trapped in the farthest lines, which then freezes.
• Using an undersized compressor. Insufficient CFM causes the compressor to cycle off, leaving water behind.
• Forgetting to close the main water valve. Residual pressure can cause a sudden surge when the compressor starts, damaging fittings.
• Neglecting to wear hearing protection. Gas compressors exceed 90 dB; prolonged exposure risks hearing loss.
• Leaving the blowout adapter attached. If the system is re‑pressurized in spring with the adapter in place, it can become a projectile.

Tips and Best Practices

Implement these practices to make the job smoother and more reliable:

• Perform the blowout on a dry, calm day; wind can blow debris into open heads.
• Label each zone on the controller with its physical location to avoid confusion.
• Use a moisture trap on the compressor outlet to keep oil and water out of the irrigation lines.
• Keep a spare blowout adapter in your tool kit; threads can strip over time.
• After the blowout, cycle each zone once more with the controller in “off” mode to ensure no residual air pressure remains.
• Store the compressor in a heated space if you plan to use it again before spring; cold oil can reduce performance.
• Consider a professional inspection every 3–5 years to catch hidden wear on valves and backflow devices.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If a zone fails to clear, follow this quick diagnostic flow:

• No air flow at all. Check compressor output, hose connections, and that the regulator is open.
• Water continues to spray after 3 minutes. The zone may have a low‑point trap; increase compressor run time or add a second pass.
• Sprinkler heads pop off. Pressure is too high; lower regulator to 35 PSI and retry.
• Compressor cycles off repeatedly. The compressor’s CFM rating is insufficient for the system size; upgrade to a larger unit.
• Backflow preventer leaks after blowout. Inspect the test cock seals; replace worn O‑rings before spring startup.

When to Call a Professional

While many homeowners successfully blow out their own systems, certain situations warrant a licensed irrigation contractor:

• Commercial or multi‑acre properties with dozens of zones and large‑diameter mainlines.
• Systems that incorporate a pump station, pressure‑regulated valves, or complex control wiring.
• Backflow preventers that require annual testing and certification by a certified tester.
• Any sign of existing damage (cracked pipe, leaking valve) discovered during the blowout.
• Lack of access to a suitable compressor or inability to safely operate one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PSI should I use when blowing out my sprinkler system?

Set the regulator to 40–45 PSI. Never exceed 50 PSI at the sprinkler heads to avoid damage.

How much CFM do I need for a residential blowout?

A minimum of 50 CFM at 90 PSI tank pressure is recommended for typical 8–12 zone residential systems.

Can I use a small portable compressor (under 5 CFM) for a blowout?

No. Small compressors cannot sustain the airflow needed to push water through all zones and will leave water in the lines.

How long should each zone run during the blowout?

Run each zone until only a fine mist or no water exits the heads, usually 2–3 minutes per zone.

Is antifreeze a good alternative to a blowout?

Antifreeze can protect the system but requires a thorough spring flush, adds cost, and raises environmental concerns. Blowout remains the preferred method for most climates.

When is the best time to perform the blowout?

Schedule the blowout after the last irrigation cycle of the season and before the first hard freeze, typically late October to early November in northern zones.

Should I hire a professional or do it myself?

If you have a suitable compressor, understand pressure regulation, and feel comfortable with the steps, DIY is cost‑effective. For large, complex, or certified systems, a professional ensures compliance and safety.
