Understanding Hunter Sprinkler Systems

Hunter Industries has manufactured irrigation equipment since 1981, and their products are used in everything from small residential lawns to large golf courses and municipal parks. All Hunter sprinkler systems have user-friendly adjustment features that let you customize water distribution without specialized training or expensive equipment. Adjustment controls three key variables: arc (the width of the area the sprinkler covers, measured in degrees), radius (the distance water travels from the head), and boundaries (the left and right edges of the spray pattern for rotating heads). When set correctly, heads overlap slightly with neighbors to eliminate dry spots, while avoiding water on non-landscaped areas like patios or driveways. Many Hunter heads also include check valves to prevent low-head drainage (dripping after the zone shuts off) and built-in filters to reduce clogs from debris. Understanding these basics will make adjustment simple even for first-time DIYers.

Common Types of Hunter Sprinkler Heads

Hunter produces three main categories of sprinkler heads, each designed for specific use cases and requiring slightly different adjustment methods. Knowing which type of head you have is the first step to making accurate adjustments. The table below breaks down the key differences between the most common Hunter head types:

Spray heads are the most common type for residential use, as they work well for small, enclosed areas and provide a fine, misty spray that’s ideal for grass and delicate plants. Rotor heads are better for larger open spaces, as they rotate slowly to deliver water in larger droplets that are less affected by wind. MP Rotator nozzles are a newer innovation that combine the best of both worlds: they deliver multiple rotating streams of water that reduce wind drift and runoff, making them perfect for sloped or oddly shaped lawns. Each of these head types has a slightly different adjustment process, which we’ll cover in detail later in this guide.

When to Adjust Your Hunter Sprinkler Heads

Many homeowners only adjust their sprinkler heads when they notice an obvious problem, like a dry patch of grass or water spraying onto their driveway. However, regular adjustments will keep your system running efficiently year-round. You should adjust your Hunter sprinkler heads in the following situations:

• After initial installation: Newly installed sprinkler systems often have heads set to factory default settings that may not match your specific lawn layout, so adjusting them immediately after installation ensures even coverage from day one.
• After landscaping changes: If you add new garden beds, remove trees, install a patio, or change the grade of your lawn, you’ll need to adjust your sprinkler heads to match the new layout and avoid spraying water onto hardscapes or non-landscaped areas.
• Seasonally: Water pressure can change with the seasons, especially in areas with high summer water demand. Check and adjust your heads in spring after winter freezing temperatures may have shifted heads or damaged components, and again in late summer to account for lower water pressure from municipal supplies or wells.
• When you notice coverage issues: If you see dry spots, overspray, misting (which indicates too high water pressure), or uneven growth in your lawn, your sprinkler heads likely need adjustment to fix the problem.
• After repairs: If you replace a sprinkler head, repair a broken pipe, or update your irrigation controller, you’ll need to readjust the affected heads to match your existing system settings.

Making adjustments as part of your regular lawn and garden maintenance will save you money on water bills, reduce the need for extra fertilizer or seed to fix dry spots, and extend the life of your irrigation system.

Essential Tools for Hunter Sprinkler Adjustment

One of the best things about Hunter sprinkler systems is that most adjustments require only basic tools, many of which you may already have in your garage. You will need the following items to adjust your Hunter sprinkler heads:

• Hunter adjustment tool (or small flathead screwdriver): Hunter sells a universal adjustment tool that fits all of their current sprinkler head models, and it’s designed to slip into adjustment slots without stripping the soft plastic screws. For older spray heads, a small flathead screwdriver works just as well, but it’s easier to slip and damage the adjustment screw if you’re not careful.
• Pliers: Useful for tightening or loosening the cap on pop-up spray heads if it’s stuck, or for removing debris from the nozzle.
• Tape measure: To check the spray radius and ensure all heads are overlapping correctly (most lawn sprinklers should have 30-50% overlap between adjacent heads for even coverage).
• Notepad and pen: To record your adjusted settings, so you have a reference if you need to readjust the heads later or if a setting gets shifted accidentally.
• Gloves: To protect your hands from dirt, grass, and sharp edges on sprinkler heads or landscaping rocks.
• Compressed air (optional): To blow out debris from clogged nozzles if you’re having issues with uneven spray patterns.

You won’t need any specialized power tools or expensive equipment to adjust your Hunter sprinklers, which is part of why they’re such a popular choice for DIY homeowners.

Step-by-Step Adjustment Guides for All Hunter Head Types

While all Hunter sprinkler heads share the same core adjustment variables (arc, radius, and boundaries), the exact process for making these adjustments varies slightly by head type. Below are detailed, step-by-step instructions for adjusting the three most common Hunter head types.

Adjusting Hunter Spray Sprinkler Heads

Hunter spray heads (including pop-up and fixed spray models) are the most common type used in residential lawns, and they’re also the simplest to adjust. These heads deliver a fixed spray pattern (usually a quarter, half, or full circle) and have two main adjustment points: the arc adjustment screw, which controls the width of the spray pattern, and the radius adjustment screw, which controls how far the water travels. Follow these steps to adjust your Hunter spray heads:

1. Activate the sprinkler zone: Turn on the irrigation system to the zone that contains the head you’re adjusting. This will let you see the current spray pattern in real time, so you can make adjustments based on actual coverage rather than guessing.
2. Locate the adjustment screws: Once the head pops up, you’ll see two small screws on the top of the nozzle: the arc adjustment screw (usually marked with a “L” or left arrow) on the left side of the nozzle, and the radius adjustment screw (usually marked with an “R” or radius symbol) on the right side. If your head has a cap, you may need to remove it first by twisting it counterclockwise or using pliers to grip it.
3. Adjust the arc (spray width): Use your Hunter adjustment tool or flathead screwdriver to turn the arc adjustment screw. Turn it clockwise to decrease the arc (narrow the spray pattern) and counterclockwise to increase the arc (widen the pattern). Make small 1/4 turn adjustments and wait a few seconds for the head to reset after each turn. For example, if the spray is hitting your driveway, turn the screw clockwise to narrow the pattern so it only covers your lawn.
4. Adjust the radius (spray distance): Next, turn the radius adjustment screw clockwise to shorten the spray distance, or counterclockwise to lengthen it. Adjust until the water reaches the edge of your target area without spraying onto hardscapes like driveways or patios.
5. Test and fine-tune: Walk around the spray area to check for even coverage. Ensure the spray overlaps slightly with adjacent heads to eliminate dry patches, and make small additional adjustments as needed.
6. Secure the head: Once you’re happy with the adjustment, turn off the sprinkler zone and allow the head to retract fully. If you removed the cap, twist it back on clockwise until it’s snug, but don’t overtighten it, as this can damage the threads.

Most Hunter spray heads also have a built-in check valve that prevents water from draining out of the head after the zone shuts off, which eliminates low-head drainage and reduces water waste. If you notice water continuing to drip from the head after the zone is off, you may need to adjust the check valve setting, which is usually a small screw on the side of the head that controls the seal tightness.

Adjusting Hunter Rotor Sprinkler Heads

Hunter rotor heads (including popular models like the PGP-ADJ and I-20) are designed for larger areas, as they rotate slowly to deliver water in larger droplets that are less affected by wind. Unlike spray heads, rotor heads have adjustable left and right boundaries, so you can set exactly where the spray starts and ends, as well as the arc (the total width of the coverage area) and radius. Follow these steps to adjust your Hunter rotor heads:

1. Activate the sprinkler zone: Turn on the zone containing the rotor head you’re adjusting. Rotor heads rotate slowly, so wait a few seconds for the head to start turning and show its full spray pattern.
2. Set the left boundary: Locate the left boundary adjustment screw on the side of the rotor head (it’s usually marked with a left arrow or “L”). Turn it clockwise until it stops to set the leftmost point of the spray pattern. Then, turn it counterclockwise slowly until the leading edge of the spray aligns with the left edge of the area you want to water. For example, if you want the spray to start at the edge of your lawn and avoid the driveway, turn the screw until the water just reaches the driveway edge, then back it out 1/4 turn so the spray starts just inside the lawn.
3. Set the right boundary: Locate the right boundary adjustment screw (marked with a right arrow or “R”) on the opposite side of the head. Turn it clockwise until it stops to set the rightmost point of the spray, then turn it counterclockwise slowly until the trailing edge of the spray aligns with the right edge of your target coverage area. Make sure the right boundary does not extend onto hardscapes or areas you don’t want to water.
4. Adjust the arc: The arc adjustment screw (usually located on the top of the head, marked with an arc symbol) controls the total width of the spray pattern between the left and right boundaries. Turn the screw clockwise to decrease the arc (make the coverage area narrower) and counterclockwise to increase the arc (make it wider). For example, if your rotor is set to cover a 180-degree half-circle but you only need it to cover a 90-degree corner, turn the arc screw clockwise until the spray only covers the corner area.
5. Adjust the radius (optional): If you need to shorten or lengthen the distance the water travels, use the radius adjustment screw (usually on the side of the head, marked with a radius symbol) to make changes. Turn clockwise to shorten the radius, counterclockwise to lengthen it. Most Hunter rotor heads have a radius range of 15 to 50 feet, so adjust as needed to match your lawn size.
6. Test and fine-tune: Watch the rotor as it completes a full rotation to check for even coverage. Make sure there are no gaps between the left and right boundaries, and that the spray overlaps with adjacent heads. Make small adjustments to the boundary or arc screws as needed until the coverage is even.
7. Secure the settings: Once you’re satisfied with the adjustment, turn off the zone. Most Hunter rotor heads have a locking mechanism on the adjustment screws to prevent them from shifting over time – engage the lock by turning the screw an extra 1/8 turn clockwise after setting your desired position.

Hunter rotor heads are designed to operate at a wide range of water pressures (20 to 100 PSI), so you won’t need to adjust the pressure to get the desired spray pattern, as long as your system’s pressure is within that range. If you notice misting or very short spray distance, check your system’s pressure regulator to make sure it’s set correctly for your head model.

Adjusting Hunter MP Rotator Sprinkler Heads

Hunter MP Rotator nozzles are one of the most popular upgrades for residential irrigation systems, as they deliver low-precipitation, wind-resistant spray that’s perfect for sloped lawns, areas with high wind, or irregularly shaped garden beds. Unlike traditional spray heads, MP Rotators use multiple rotating streams of water to reduce runoff and wind drift, and they offer tool-free arc adjustment that’s quick and easy. Follow these steps to adjust your Hunter MP Rotator heads:

1. Activate the sprinkler zone: Turn on the zone with the MP Rotator you’re adjusting. The nozzle will pop up and start rotating, showing its current spray pattern.
2. Locate the adjustment points: MP Rotators have two adjustment points: the arc adjustment slot on the top of the nozzle, and the radius adjustment screw on the side of the nozzle body. Some models have a removable cap that you’ll need to twist off counterclockwise to access the adjustment slot, while others have a built-in slot that’s accessible without removing the cap.
3. Adjust the arc: Insert the tab on the official Hunter MP Rotator adjustment tool (or a small flathead screwdriver, if you don’t have the official tool) into the arc adjustment slot on top of the nozzle. Turn the tool counterclockwise to increase the arc (up to a full 360-degree circle) and clockwise to decrease the arc. Each full turn of the tool changes the arc by 45 degrees, so make small adjustments and wait a few seconds for the nozzle to reset to the new setting. For example, if you want the MP Rotator to cover a half-circle instead of a full circle, turn the tool clockwise twice (90 degrees total) from the full-circle position.
4. Adjust the radius: Use your tool or flathead screwdriver to turn the radius adjustment screw on the side of the nozzle. Turn it clockwise to shorten the spray distance, and counterclockwise to lengthen it. MP Rotators have a typical radius range of 10 to 30 feet, depending on the model, so adjust as needed to match your lawn size. Make sure the radius is set so the spray overlaps slightly with adjacent heads for even coverage.
5. Test the pattern: Watch the MP Rotator as it completes a full rotation to check for even coverage. The rotating streams should cover the entire target area without gaps, and should not spray onto hardscapes or non-landscaped areas. If you notice dry spots, increase the radius slightly or adjust the arc to overlap more with adjacent heads.
6. Secure the nozzle: Once you’re happy with the adjustment, turn off the zone and allow the nozzle to retract. If you removed a cap, twist it back on clockwise until it’s snug. MP Rotators are designed to hold their adjustment settings securely, so you won’t need to lock the screws in place like you do with rotor heads.

One of the biggest advantages of MP Rotators is that they allow you to mix different spray patterns in the same zone, so you can use a 90-degree nozzle in a corner, a 180-degree nozzle along a fence line, and a 360-degree nozzle in an open area, all while maintaining consistent precipitation rates. This makes them ideal for irregularly shaped lawns where traditional spray heads would require multiple separate zones.

Troubleshooting Common Adjustment Issues

Even with careful adjustment, you may run into common issues with your Hunter sprinkler heads. Most of these problems are easy to fix with basic troubleshooting, no professional help required. Below are the most frequent issues and their solutions:

• Uneven spray pattern or dry spots: This is usually caused by clogged nozzles, incorrect settings, or low water pressure. Turn off the zone, remove the nozzle to clear debris like dirt or grass clippings, then confirm your arc and radius settings cover the full area. If the issue remains, check that your system’s water pressure is between 30 and 50 PSI, the recommended range for most Hunter heads.
• Sprinkler head won’t rotate: This is almost always caused by debris jamming the mechanism, or the arc adjustment screw being tightened to the 0 position (which stops rotation). Turn off the zone, remove the nozzle to clear debris, then turn the arc screw counterclockwise 1/4 turn to allow movement. If the head still won’t rotate, the internal gear drive may be worn out and need replacement.
• Overspray on driveways, patios, or sidewalks: This is caused by the radius being set too long, or the arc not avoiding hardscapes. Shorten the radius by turning the radius screw clockwise, and adjust boundaries or arc to keep spray on landscaped areas only. You can also install a shorter-radius head or a deflector shield to block overspray.
• Low-head drainage (water dripping after the zone shuts off): Most modern Hunter heads have a built-in check valve to prevent this, but a worn or misadjusted valve will cause dripping. Locate the check valve adjustment screw (usually a small hex screw on the side of the head) and turn it clockwise 1/4 turn to tighten the seal. If the issue persists, replace the check valve or the entire head.
• Misting or fogging spray: This is caused by water pressure that’s too high, which atomizes water into wind-blown droplets. Install a pressure regulator on the zone line to reduce pressure to the 30-50 PSI range recommended for most Hunter heads, or replace the nozzle with a low-precipitation MP Rotator that delivers larger, wind-resistant droplets.

If you’ve tried all of these troubleshooting steps and the problem still persists, the issue may be with your system’s main water supply, a broken pipe, or a faulty valve, which may require professional repair.

Tips and Best Practices for Long-Lasting Adjustments

Proper adjustment is only half the battle – following these best practices will keep your Hunter sprinkler heads working efficiently for years and reduce the need for frequent readjustments:

• Make small adjustments: Always turn adjustment screws in 1/4 turn increments, and test the spray pattern after each adjustment. It’s easy to overcorrect and end up with the opposite problem (e.g., shortening the radius too much and creating dry spots) if you make large adjustments all at once.
• Adjust during cooler parts of the day: Make adjustments early in the morning or late in the evening, when the sun is not at its peak. This reduces water waste from evaporation while you’re testing the system, and prevents you from getting soaked by the spray.
• Clean nozzles regularly: Debris like dirt, grass clippings, and leaves can clog the nozzle and distort the spray pattern, leading to uneven coverage. Remove nozzles at least once per season to clean them, and use a compressed air can to blow out any small debris that’s stuck inside.
• Check adjustments seasonally: Water pressure changes with the seasons, especially in areas with high summer water demand or winter freezing temperatures. Check your sprinkler heads in spring and fall to make sure their settings are still correct, and readjust as needed.
• Use official Hunter tools: While a flathead screwdriver works for many adjustments, the official Hunter adjustment tool is designed to fit the adjustment slots perfectly, reducing the risk of stripping the soft plastic screws on the heads. This is especially important for MP Rotator nozzles, which have small, delicate adjustment slots that are easy to damage with the wrong tool.
• Avoid overtightening adjustment screws: The adjustment screws on Hunter heads are made of soft plastic to prevent damage to the internal components, so they can strip easily if you overtighten them. Tighten screws just enough to hold the setting in place, but don’t force them past that point.
• Record your settings: Keep a notepad or digital note with the arc, radius, and boundary settings for each sprinkler head in your system. This makes it easy to readjust the heads quickly if a setting gets shifted accidentally, or if you need to replace a head and match the existing settings.

Following these tips will keep your irrigation system running efficiently, reduce water waste, and ensure your lawn stays green and healthy all season long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I adjust Hunter sprinkler heads without a special tool?

Yes, most Hunter spray and rotor heads can be adjusted with a small flathead screwdriver, though the official Hunter adjustment tool provides more precision and reduces the risk of stripping the soft plastic adjustment screws. For MP Rotator heads, the official tool is strongly recommended, as their small adjustment slots are easy to damage with a regular screwdriver. If you don’t have the official tool, use a small, sharp flathead screwdriver that fits snugly into the slot to avoid slipping.

How often should I adjust my Hunter sprinkler heads?

You should check and adjust your Hunter sprinkler heads at least twice a year: once in spring after winter thaw, and once in late summer when water pressure may drop due to high municipal demand. Adjust them immediately after landscaping changes, system repairs, or if you notice uneven coverage, overspray, or dry spots. If you live in an area with extreme temperature swings or frequent yard changes, check every 3 to 4 months.

Why is my Hunter sprinkler head spraying water in the wrong direction?

This is almost always caused by an incorrectly set left boundary screw, especially for rotor heads. To fix it, turn on the zone, use your adjustment tool to turn the left boundary screw counterclockwise until the spray starts at the correct left edge of your coverage area. Tighten the screw gently to prevent it from shifting over time. For spray heads, check that the arc adjustment screw is not set to a partial pattern rotated away from your target area.

What do I do if my Hunter sprinkler head won’t rotate?

First, turn off the zone and check the nozzle for debris like dirt, grass clippings, or small rocks that may be jamming the rotation mechanism. Clear any debris, then turn the zone back on. If it still won’t rotate, check that the arc adjustment screw is not tightened all the way to the 0 position, which stops rotation entirely – turn it counterclockwise 1/4 turn to allow movement. If the problem persists, the internal gear drive may be worn out and need replacement.

Can I adjust Hunter sprinkler heads to water sloped areas?

Yes, but you’ll need to combine adjustments to avoid runoff. Set a shorter radius to apply water slowly, adjust the arc to cover the slope in multiple short passes, and use “cycle and soak” scheduling (shorter run times with multiple cycles) to let water soak into the soil instead of running off. Hunter MP Rotator nozzles are ideal for slopes, as their low-precipitation rotating streams reduce runoff significantly.

Conclusion

Adjusting Hunter sprinkler heads is a simple, straightforward process that almost any homeowner can do in less than an hour, no professional help required. By understanding the three key adjustment variables (arc, radius, and boundaries) and following the step-by-step instructions for your specific head type, you can eliminate dry spots, stop overspray on hardscapes, and reduce your water bill by ensuring your system only waters the areas that need it. Regular adjustments, especially after landscaping changes or seasonal shifts in water pressure, will keep your irrigation system running efficiently for years.
