Fertilizer Application Frequency for New Lawns
Now that you’ve chosen the right fertilizer for your new lawn, it’s essential to determine the optimal application frequency to ensure it receives the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A well-planned fertilization schedule will help your lawn establish a strong root system, promote healthy growth, and prevent potential problems down the line.
Initial Fertilization and Establishment Phase
During the initial establishment phase, which typically lasts for 2-3 months after seeding or sodding, your lawn requires frequent fertilization to promote root growth and development. We recommend applying a starter fertilizer (typically a balanced formula with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10) every 2-4 weeks during this period. This will provide the necessary nutrients for seed germination, seedling growth, and establishment of a robust root system.
- For example, if you applied a starter fertilizer 2 weeks ago, it’s likely time to reapply another dose to maintain the growth momentum.
- Keep in mind that the frequency of application may vary depending on weather conditions, soil type, and grass species.
Regular Fertilization and Maintenance Phase
After the initial establishment phase, your lawn will enter a regular fertilization and maintenance phase, which can last for several months. At this stage, we recommend applying a slow-release fertilizer (typically a balanced formula with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10) every 4-6 weeks. This will provide a steady supply of nutrients to support continued growth, promote healthy color, and prevent potential problems such as thinning or disease.
By following a well-planned fertilization schedule, you’ll be able to maintain a lush, healthy lawn that thrives throughout the growing season. In our next section, we’ll explore the key benefits and advantages of regular fertilization, including improved soil health, increased drought tolerance, and enhanced pest resistance.
