Understanding Your STIHL BG 50
The STIHL BG 50 is a handheld gas-powered leaf blower designed for residential and light commercial use. It features a two-stroke engine that requires a precise fuel-to-oil mixture to operate efficiently. Unlike electric blowers, the BG 50 delivers high power-to-weight performance, making it ideal for moving leaves, grass clippings, and debris across medium to large areas. Familiarity with its key components, including the primer bulb, choke lever, throttle trigger, and air filter, is crucial before attempting to start the machine.
Key Components Overview
Understanding each part of the blower helps prevent accidental damage during startup. The primer bulb circulates fuel into the carburetor, the choke controls air intake for cold starts, and the throttle trigger regulates engine speed. The air filter protects the engine from dust and debris, while the spark plug ignites the fuel mixture. Regular inspection of these components ensures optimal performance and longevity.
Safety First
Before handling any gas-powered tool, safety must be your top priority. Always wear protective gear such as safety glasses, gloves, and closed-toe shoes. Ensure the work area is clear of flammable materials, and never operate the blower indoors or in enclosed spaces due to carbon monoxide risks. Check that the spark plug wire is disconnected during maintenance to prevent accidental ignition.
Pre-Start Checklist
Performing a quick pre-start inspection can prevent many issues before they occur. Verify that the fuel tank contains fresh gasoline mixed with the correct amount of two-stroke oil. Inspect the air filter for dirt or blockages and clean or replace it if necessary. Confirm that the choke lever moves freely and that the primer bulb is intact. Finally, ensure the throttle trigger operates smoothly without sticking.
Fuel and Oil Mixture
The STIHL BG 50 requires a 50:1 fuel-to-oil ratio, meaning 2.6 ounces of two-stroke oil per gallon of unleaded gasoline. Using the wrong mixture can lead to poor performance, excessive smoke, or engine damage. Always mix fuel in a separate container and shake thoroughly before filling the tank. Avoid using old fuel, as ethanol separation can clog the carburetor over time.
Recommended Fuel Type
Use fresh premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher. Ethanol-blended fuels are acceptable but should be treated with a fuel stabilizer if not used within 30 days. Premium fuel reduces the risk of pre-ignition and deposits in the combustion chamber.
Priming the Pump
Priming the engine ensures fuel reaches the carburetor before starting. Press the primer bulb slowly until fuel becomes visible inside the bulb and no air bubbles remain. Over-priming can flood the engine, so avoid excessive pumping. If the engine has been sitting for an extended period, additional priming may be necessary.
Choke and Throttle Settings
Proper choke positioning is critical for successful startup. For cold starts, set the choke to the full position to enrich the fuel mixture. Once the engine fires and begins running, gradually move the choke to the half or off position as the engine warms up. The throttle should remain in the idle position during startup unless specified otherwise by the manufacturer.
Choke Positions Explained
Most STIHL blowers feature three choke positions: full, half, and off. Full choke restricts air flow for maximum fuel richness. Half choke provides a balanced mixture for warm-up. Off allows normal airflow once the engine reaches operating temperature.
Starting Procedure Step by Step
- Place the blower on a flat, stable surface and engage the parking brake if equipped.
- Set the choke to the full position for cold starts or half position for warm starts.
- Press the primer bulb several times until fuel is visible and air bubbles disappear.
- Hold the throttle trigger in the idle position.
- Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly until the engine fires.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke toward the off position as it warms up.
- After the engine runs steadily, return the choke to the off position completely.
- Allow the engine to idle for a few minutes before applying throttle.
Electric Start Variants
Some newer models include an electric start option. In these cases, ensure the battery is fully charged and follow the same fuel and choke preparation steps before pressing the start button.
Cold vs Warm Starts
Cold starts require more fuel enrichment, so always use full choke and additional priming. Warm starts typically need less choke and fewer primer pumps. If the engine was recently turned off and is still warm, set the choke to half position and attempt starting immediately.
Temperature Considerations
In extremely cold weather, pre-warming the engine block with a hair dryer or letting the blower sit in a heated environment can improve starting success. Conversely, hot starts after extended use may only require minimal choke adjustment.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Even with proper technique, some issues may arise. Below are solutions for the most frequent problems encountered when starting a STIHL BG 50.
Engine Won’t Start
If the engine fails to start, check for spark by removing the spark plug and pulling the starter rope. A strong blue spark indicates the ignition system is functional. Absence of spark suggests a faulty spark plug or ignition coil. Additionally, verify that fuel is reaching the carburetor by inspecting the primer bulb and fuel lines.
Engine Floods Easily
Flooding occurs when too much fuel enters the combustion chamber. To clear a flooded engine, turn the choke to the off position and pull the starter rope several times without the throttle engaged. This helps burn off excess fuel and restore proper combustion.
Excessive Smoke
Blue or white smoke often indicates oil burning, usually caused by an incorrect fuel mixture or worn engine components. Black smoke typically points to a rich fuel mixture or clogged air filter. Adjust the fuel ratio accordingly and inspect the air filter regularly.
Maintenance Tips
Regular maintenance extends the life of your blower and improves reliability. Clean or replace the air filter after every 25 hours of operation. Change the spark plug annually or when noticeable wear appears. Drain old fuel at the end of the season and run the engine until it stops to prevent carburetor clogging.
Off-Season Storage
Before storing the blower for winter, drain all fuel or add a fuel stabilizer. Remove the spark plug and store it in a dry location. Fog the cylinder with oil to protect internal components from corrosion during long-term storage.
