Tools and Materials Needed

Before you start, gather everything so you won’t have to pause mid‑job. The list is short but each item matters:

• Replacement trimmer line (typically .080‑inch or .095‑inch round line for Dewalt 20V models)
• Scissors or a sharp utility knife for cutting the line
• Work gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges
• Safety glasses or goggles
• Clean cloth or shop towel for wiping the spool
• Optional: a small flat‑head screwdriver if your spool cover uses a screw

Having the correct line diameter is crucial. Using a line that’s too thick can jam the feed mechanism, while a line that’s too thin may break prematurely. Check your owner’s manual for the exact specification; most Dewalt 20V trimmers accept .080‑inch line, but some newer heads are rated for .095‑inch.

Safety Precautions

Working with a rotating cutting head demands respect for basic safety rules:

1. Turn the trimmer off and remove the battery pack before any disassembly.
2. Wear safety glasses; line fragments can fly at high speed.
3. Gloves protect against cuts from the line and any sharp edges on the spool housing.
4. Work on a stable, flat surface to prevent the tool from rolling.
5. Keep children and pets away from the work area.

Following these steps eliminates the risk of accidental starts and reduces the chance of injury while you learn How to Restring a Dewalt 20v Weed Eater?.

Understanding the Spool and Line Types

The Dewalt 20V trimmer uses a bump‑feed spool that holds a single continuous length of line. There are two common spool designs:

• Single‑line spool – one line feeds from the center; simpler to load but may require more frequent reloading.
• Dual‑line spool – two lines feed simultaneously, giving a wider cutting swath. Loading is slightly more involved because you must thread both ends.

Line material also varies. Standard nylon line works for most residential tasks. For heavy‑duty brush or thick weeds, consider a reinforced, serrated, or twisted line that resists abrasion. Always match the line diameter to the spool’s rating; the spool housing usually has a stamped indicator (e.g., “.080”).

Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Restring a Dewalt 20v Weed Eater?

Below is the complete procedure broken into clear, numbered actions. Follow each step in order for a smooth reload.

1. Remove the Spool

Press the spool release button (usually located on the side of the head) and pull the spool straight out. If your model uses a screw‑on cover, loosen the screw with a flat‑head screwdriver first. Set the spool on a clean work surface.

2. Clean the Spool and Housing

Use a dry cloth to wipe away grass clippings, dust, and old line fragments from both the spool and the interior of the head. Debris can interfere with the feed mechanism and cause jams later.

3. Cut the New Line to Length

Measure roughly 20‑25 feet of line for a single‑line spool, or 10‑12 feet per strand for a dual‑line spool. Cut the line cleanly with scissors or a utility knife. A straight cut prevents fraying that could snag during feeding.

4. Load the Line onto the Spool

1. Locate the anchor hole(s) on the spool. Insert one end of the line into the hole and pull it through until a short tail (about 2‑3 inches) remains.
2. Wind the line tightly and evenly in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (usually clockwise). Keep tension consistent to avoid loose loops.
3. Leave the final 2‑3 inches of line free; this will become the feed tail.
4. If you have a dual‑line spool, repeat the process for the second anchor hole, winding the second strand in the same direction.

Proper winding is the heart of How to Restring a Dewalt 20v Weed Eater?. Uneven layers cause the line to bind or feed unevenly.

5. Reassemble the Spool into the Head

Align the spool’s notches with the tabs inside the head, then push the spool firmly until it clicks into place. If a screw cover was removed, reinstall and tighten the screw just enough to hold the cover without stripping the threads.

6. Test the Trimmer

Reinsert the battery, power on the trimmer, and gently tap the head on the ground (the “bump” action). The line should extend a few inches. If it doesn’t, double‑check that the line tails are free and not trapped under the wound layers.

Alternative Method: Using Pre‑Wound Spools

If you prefer to skip the winding step, Dewalt and third‑party manufacturers sell pre‑wound spools that snap directly into the head. The process is even simpler:

1. Remove the old spool as described above.
2. Discard or recycle the used spool.
3. Insert the new pre‑wound spool, aligning the notches.
4. Secure the cover and test.

Pre‑wound spools cost a bit more per foot of line but save time and guarantee perfect winding tension. They’re ideal for users who restring frequently or manage multiple crews.

The table highlights why many professionals stick with Dewalt: a balanced weight, wide line compatibility, and a mature 20V ecosystem that shares batteries across drills, saws, and blowers.

Tips for Longer Line Life

Extending the interval between restringing saves money and downtime. Apply these best practices:

• Match line to task – Use standard round line for grass; switch to serrated or twisted line only when tackling thick brush.
• Avoid hard surfaces – Concrete, rocks, and metal edges shred line instantly. Trim a safe distance away.
• Keep the spool clean – Debris buildup creates friction that accelerates wear.
• Store the trimmer properly – Hang the tool or place it on a shelf with the head up; this prevents the line from developing a permanent bend.
• Use the correct bump technique – A light tap is enough; slamming the head wastes line and stresses the feed spring.

Consistent care means you’ll spend less time figuring out How to Restring a Dewalt 20v Weed Eater? and more time cutting.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced users slip up. Watch for these pitfalls:

1. Over‑filling the spool – Too much line prevents the bump mechanism from releasing line.
2. Winding in the wrong direction – The arrow on the spool is not decorative; reversing it causes the line to jam.
3. Using mismatched line diameter – A .105″ line in a .080″ spool will bind; a .065″ line will snap under load.
4. Neglecting to remove the battery – An accidental trigger press can spin the head while your fingers are near the spool.
5. Leaving line tails too long – Excess tail can catch on the housing and stop feed.

Correcting any of these issues usually restores proper operation without a full re‑string.

Maintenance Schedule

A simple routine keeps the trimmer reliable all season:

Sticking to this schedule reduces unexpected line breaks and prolongs the life of the feed mechanism.

Troubleshooting: Line Not Feeding

If the line refuses to advance after a bump, run through this checklist:

• Confirm the battery is fully charged and seated correctly.
• Remove the spool and verify the line tails are free and not trapped.
• Inspect the bump‑feed spring for corrosion or breakage; replace if necessary.
• Ensure the spool rotates freely; debris or a bent shaft can lock it.
• Check that the line diameter matches the spool rating.

Most feed issues resolve with a quick clean and re‑wind. If the problem persists, the feed assembly may need professional service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What line diameter should I use for my Dewalt 20V trimmer?

Most Dewalt 20V models accept .080‑inch round line. Some newer heads are rated for .095‑inch. Always verify the specification printed on the spool housing or in the owner’s manual.

Can I use a pre‑wound spool from another brand?

Yes, as long as the spool dimensions and line diameter match Dewalt’s specifications. However, using genuine Dewalt spools guarantees fit and feed performance.

How often should I restring the trimmer?

It depends on usage. Light residential work may only need a reload every few weeks, while heavy commercial use can require daily restringing. Monitor line length; reload when the exposed line drops below six inches.

Why does my line keep breaking near the eyelet?

Sharp edges on the spool eyelet or a mismatched line diameter cause stress concentrations. File any burrs lightly with fine sandpaper and confirm you’re using the correct line size.

Is it safe to restring the trimmer while the battery is attached?

No. Always remove the battery pack before disassembling the head to prevent accidental starts.
