Understanding Your Dewalt Weed Eater

Dewalt manufactures several variants of corded and cordless weed eaters, each designed for specific tasks and user preferences. Understanding your model’s unique features will make the string replacement process smoother and more efficient. Most Dewalt string trimmers use a bump-feed or auto-feed system, which automatically releases new line as needed during operation.

Common Dewalt Models

Some popular Dewalt weed eater models include:

• DCG413B (20V MAX Cordless)
• DCHT820B (20V MAX Hedge Trimmer)
• DCHT821P2 (60V MAX Cordless Hedge Trimmer)
• DWE6505 (Corded Electric Trimmer)

Each model may have slight variations in how the string is loaded, but the general principles remain consistent across all Dewalt trimmers.

Why Replace the String?

The string on your weed eater serves as the cutting element that slices through grass, weeds, and small branches. Over time, this string wears down due to friction against hard surfaces like concrete, brick, or thick vegetation. Continuing to operate with degraded string can lead to inefficient trimming, increased strain on the motor, and potential damage to your plants or property.

Signs You Need New String

Look out for these indicators that it’s time to replace the string:

• Frayed or broken ends
• String that tangles easily
• Inconsistent cutting performance
• Frequent line breakage during use
• String that won’t feed properly from the spool

Tools and Materials Needed

Before beginning the replacement process, gather the following items to ensure a smooth experience:

• New replacement string (appropriate gauge for your model)
• Scissors or utility knife
• Flathead screwdriver
• Clean cloth or paper towels
• Optional: Small flashlight for inspecting internal components

Identifying the Right String Type

Using the correct string diameter is crucial for optimal performance. Using string that’s too thin may break frequently, while string that’s too thick can overload the motor and cause premature wear. Most Dewalt weed eaters are compatible with 0.080 inch line, though some heavy-duty models accept 0.095 inch line.

String Materials

Different string materials offer varying benefits:

• Copolymer: Durable and resistant to abrasion; ideal for general use
• Polyester: Long-lasting but less flexible; good for tough jobs
• Nylon: Flexible and affordable; suitable for light trimming tasks

Preparation Steps Before Replacement

Safety should always come first when working with power tools. Follow these preparation steps before starting the string replacement:

1. Disconnect power source: Remove the battery pack or unplug the unit completely.
2. Allow cooling period: If the tool was recently used, let it cool down for at least 15 minutes.
3. Inspect the area: Clear your workspace of debris and ensure adequate lighting.
4. Check manufacturer specifications: Consult your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.

Step-by-Step Replacement Process

Now that you’ve prepared everything, here’s how to replace the string on your Dewalt weed eater:

Step 1: Remove the Spool

Locate the string housing assembly at the bottom of the trimmer head. Press the release button (usually located on the side or top of the housing) and gently twist the spool counterclockwise until it detaches from the motor shaft. Set the old spool aside carefully, as it contains the remaining string.

Step 2: Clean the Housing

Use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt, grass clippings, or debris from inside the string housing. Pay special attention to the area around the motor shaft where buildup can interfere with proper string alignment.

Step 3: Prepare the New String

Cut approximately 15 feet of new 0.080 inch string. If you’re unsure about the length, err on the side of caution and cut slightly longer rather than shorter. Too little string means frequent replacements, while excess string can cause tangling issues.

Step 4: Thread the String

Find the small hole in the center of the new spool. Insert one end of the string through this hole, leaving about 2 inches protruding from the other side. Hold the string firmly to prevent it from pulling through while you work.

Step 5: Wrap the String

Begin wrapping the string around the spool in the direction indicated by arrows molded into the plastic (typically clockwise). Keep the wraps tight and neatly aligned to avoid overlaps that could cause binding. Leave about 2 inches unwrapped near the starting point to serve as the leading end.

Step 6: Secure the String

Once you’ve wrapped most of the string, press it into the groove along the edge of the spool. This groove helps maintain proper tension and prevents the string from unwinding prematurely. Make sure the final few inches are securely seated in the groove.

Step 7: Reinstall the Spool

Align the spool with the motor shaft and insert it back into the housing. Twist clockwise until you feel resistance, then continue turning until the spool locks into place. You should hear a distinct click when it’s properly secured.

Step 8: Test the Feed Mechanism

Before using the trimmer, test the feed mechanism by briefly engaging the trigger. The string should extend smoothly from the spool. If it doesn’t feed properly, double-check that the spool is correctly installed and that there are no obstructions in the feed channel.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with careful installation, problems can arise. Here are solutions to the most common issues encountered when replacing string on Dewalt weed eaters:

String Won’t Feed

If the string isn’t extending from the spool, check the following:

• Ensure the spool is fully seated and locked in place
• Verify the string isn’t tangled or knotted inside the housing
• Check that the string is threaded correctly according to the arrow markings

String Breaks Frequently

Frequent line breakage usually indicates one of these problems:

• Using the wrong string diameter for your model
• String wrapped too loosely on the spool
• Excessive pressure applied during trimming
• String hitting hard objects repeatedly

Spool Won’t Stay Attached

If the spool keeps coming loose, inspect the locking mechanism:

• Check for damaged or worn locking tabs
• Ensure the spool is fully twisted onto the motor shaft
• Verify that the release button isn’t stuck in the depressed position

Comparison of String Types

Choosing the right string can significantly impact your trimming efficiency and tool longevity. Here’s a detailed comparison of common options:

Maintenance Tips and Best Practices

Proper maintenance extends the life of your weed eater and reduces the frequency of string replacements. Incorporate these practices into your routine:

Regular Inspection

Before each use, visually inspect the string for signs of wear. Look for fraying, discoloration, or sections that appear thinner than others. Catching these issues early prevents unexpected failures mid-job.

Proper Storage

Store your weed eater in a dry, protected environment away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can degrade string material over time, making it brittle and prone to breaking. Consider keeping spare spools in sealed containers to maintain freshness.

Avoid Overuse

Don’t push your trimmer beyond its capabilities. Attempting to cut through thick branches or woody stems with standard string can cause rapid wear and potential damage to the tool. Use appropriate cutting tools for heavy-duty tasks.

Clean After Each Use

After trimming, remove any trapped debris from the string housing. Grass clippings and sap can accumulate quickly and interfere with proper string feeding. A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth usually suffices.

When to Call a Professional

While string replacement is straightforward, certain situations warrant professional assistance:

• Persistent feeding problems despite correct installation
• Visible damage to the motor housing or internal components
• Unusual noises or vibrations during operation
• Complete failure of the automatic feed mechanism

If you encounter any of these issues, contact an authorized Dewalt service center for diagnosis and repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size string does my Dewalt weed eater use?

Most Dewalt weed eaters use 0.080 inch string, though some heavy-duty models accept 0.095 inch line. Check your owner’s manual or look for specifications printed on the tool itself to confirm the correct size for your model.

Can I use any type of string?

While many strings are interchangeable, using the manufacturer-recommended diameter ensures optimal performance and prevents damage to your tool. Always verify compatibility before purchasing replacement string.

How often should I replace the string?

Replace the string whenever you notice significant wear, fraying, or inconsistent cutting performance. For regular users, this typically occurs every 1-3 months depending on usage frequency and trimming conditions.

Is it difficult to replace the string myself?
