Understanding Weed Eater Lines
Before diving into how to install weed eater line, it’s important to understand what these lines actually are and how they function. A weed eater line — sometimes called trimmer line, string trimmer line, or simply string — is a thin cord made of durable plastic that’s fed through a rotating head on a string trimmer. As the head spins, centrifugal force extends the line outward, allowing it to cut grass, weeds, and other vegetation through friction and impact.
The line is typically stored on a spool inside the trimmer’s head housing. When the line wears down or breaks, it needs to be manually replaced. Some modern trimmers feature automatic feed systems that release more line as needed, while older models require manual bumping or winding to advance the line.
Basic Components of a Trimmer Head
Every string trimmer head consists of several key parts:
- Spool: The cylindrical container that holds the trimmer line
- Line: The actual cutting cord, usually made of nylon
- Cap: The cover that secures the spool in place
- Bump Mechanism: Found on bump-feed models, this releases more line when tapped against the ground
- Automatic Feed System: Present on electric-feed models, automatically extends line as needed
Tools and Materials Needed
Having the right tools and materials on hand makes how to install weed eater line much smoother. Here’s what you’ll typically need:
- New trimmer line (appropriate diameter for your trimmer model)
- Flathead screwdriver or small knife
- Clean cloth or paper towels
- Small container of soapy water
- Gloves (optional but recommended)
- User manual for your specific trimmer model
Most of these items are likely already in your garage or toolbox. The most critical item is the correct replacement line, which we’ll discuss next.
Types of Trimmer Lines
Not all trimmer lines are created equal. Choosing the right one depends on your trimming needs, the type of vegetation you’re tackling, and your trimmer’s specifications. Here are the main categories:
By Shape
- Round Line: The most common and versatile option. Works well for general trimming tasks.
- Square/Cross-Sectional Line: Cuts through thick weeds and grass more effectively due to increased surface area contact.
- Twist/Cable Line: Features a twisted design that provides aggressive cutting action while reducing noise.
- Star-Shaped Line: Offers excellent cutting performance on tough vegetation but may wear out faster.
By Material
- Nylon Line: Standard material that’s durable and flexible. Good for most applications.
- Reinforced Nylon: Contains additional fibers for extra strength and longevity.
- Biomium Line: Environmentally friendly option made from renewable resources.
- Co-polymer Line: Enhanced durability and resistance to weather and UV damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use any diameter line for my trimmer?
A: No, each trimmer model requires a specific line diameter. Using the wrong size can cause poor performance, excessive wear, or damage to the trimmer. Always check your user manual for specifications. Common diameters include 0.065″, 0.080″, 0.095″, and 0.105″.
How often should I replace my trimmer line?
A: Line replacement frequency depends on usage and conditions. Generally, replace line every 10-20 hours of operation or when you notice significant wear, fraying, or shortened length. Heavy-duty trimming of thick weeds may require more frequent replacement.
What’s the difference between bump feed and automatic feed?
A: Bump feed requires you to tap the trimmer head against the ground to release more line. Automatic feed systems sense when the line is getting short and automatically extend more line as needed. Automatic feed is more convenient but typically found on higher-end models.
Can I install trimmer line myself or should I take it to a professional?
A: Installing trimmer line is a straightforward DIY task that most users can handle. With basic tools and patience, anyone can learn how to install weed eater line. Professional service is only necessary if you encounter mechanical issues beyond line replacement.
Why does my line keep tangling after installation?
A: Tangling usually occurs due to improper winding technique. Make sure to wind in the correct direction (following arrows on the spool), maintain consistent tension, and avoid overlapping coils. Starting over with fresh line often solves persistent tangling issues.
How do I know which direction to wind the line?
A: Most spools have small arrows molded into the plastic indicating the proper winding direction. If no arrows are visible, observe the existing line pattern and match it. Winding in the wrong direction will cause the line to unwind during operation.
Should I use the same line for all types of trimming?
A: Different line types perform better for different tasks. Round line works well for general trimming, while square or star-shaped lines handle thick weeds more effectively. Consider keeping multiple line types on hand for various trimming challenges.
What happens if I overfill the spool?
A: Overfilling the spool can cause the line to bind, resulting in poor feeding or complete failure to extend line. Always leave about 1/2 inch of space from the spool’s edge and ensure the cap closes properly without excessive pressure.
Can weather affect trimmer line performance?
A: Yes, extreme temperatures and UV exposure can degrade trimmer line over time. Cold weather makes line brittle and prone to breaking, while prolonged sun exposure causes fading and weakening. Store spare line in a cool, dry place.
How much line should I leave extending from the head?
A: The ideal line length extends about 1 inch beyond the trimmer guard. Too short and cutting effectiveness decreases; too long and the line may whip excessively or tangle. Adjust length based on your trimming needs and personal preference.
