Understanding Your Ryobi Weed Eater
Before you dive into the replacement process, it helps to know exactly what you’re working with. Ryobi offers a range of string trimmers — corded electric, battery‑powered, and gas models — and each may use a slightly different head design. The head determines how the line is fed, how much line you can load, and the technique you’ll use to replace it.
Types of Ryobi Trimmers
Corded electric trimmers are lightweight and ideal for small yards. Battery models (18V, 40V, and 80V platforms) give you freedom of movement without a cord. Gas‑powered units deliver the most power for heavy‑duty jobs. While the power source changes, the string head mechanism is often shared across the lineup, so the replacement steps remain largely the same.
String Head Varieties
Ryobi typically equips its trimmers with one of three head styles: bump‑feed, fixed‑line, or auto‑feed. A bump‑feed head releases line when you tap the head on the ground. Fixed‑line heads require you to manually pull line through the eyelets. Auto‑feed heads advance line automatically as it wears. Identifying which head you have is the first step in a smooth line change.
Tools and Materials Needed
Gather the following items before you start: a replacement spool or bulk line compatible with your model (check the owner’s manual for the correct diameter, usually .080″ or .095″), a pair of scissors or a utility knife, a clean rag, and a small brush for debris. If your model uses a removable spool, you may also need a screwdriver (typically Phillips #2) to release the retaining cap. Having everything at hand prevents interruptions mid‑job.
Safety Precautions
Always disconnect the power source before servicing the trimmer. For corded units, unplug the cord. For battery models, remove the battery pack. For gas models, disconnect the spark plug wire and let the engine cool. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris, and gloves to keep your hands clean and shielded from sharp line ends. Keep the work area well‑lit and free of clutter.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Replace String on Ryobi Weed Eater?
Follow these numbered steps carefully. Each step corresponds to a sub‑section below for deeper detail.
- Remove the spool from the trimmer head.
- Clean the head and inspect for wear.
- Cut the new line to the proper length.
- Load the line onto the spool following the winding direction arrows.
- Reinstall the spool, secure the cap, and test the feed.
Remove the Spool
Locate the retaining cap on the trimmer head. On most Ryobi bump‑feed models, you’ll press the two side tabs simultaneously and pull the cap straight off. For fixed‑line heads, you may need to unscrew a central knob. Once the cap is off, lift the spool out. Take note of how the old line is wound — this will guide you when you load the new line.
Clean the Head
Use a brush or compressed air to remove grass clippings, dust, and old line fragments from the head housing and the spool cavity. A clean head ensures smooth line feeding and prevents premature wear. Wipe the interior with a dry rag; avoid solvents that could degrade plastic components.
Cut New String
Measure the replacement line according to the manufacturer’s recommendation — typically 10 to 15 feet for a standard spool. Cut the line cleanly with scissors or a utility knife. If you’re using bulk line, cut two equal lengths for dual‑line heads. Keep the ends square; frayed ends can jam the feed mechanism.
Load the String
Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole on the spool. Follow the directional arrows molded into the spool (usually marked “←” or “→”). Wind the line tightly and evenly, keeping each layer snug against the previous one. Avoid crossing the line over itself. Leave about 6 inches of line protruding from the eyelet for the initial feed. Repeat for the second line if your head uses a dual‑line setup.
Reassemble and Test
Place the loaded spool back into the head housing, aligning any notches or tabs. Snap or screw the retaining cap back into place. Reconnect the power source, start the trimmer, and gently tap the head on the ground (for bump‑feed) or pull the trigger (for auto‑feed) to verify that line feeds correctly. Adjust tension if the line seems too loose or too tight.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the wrong line diameter — always match the spec in the manual.
- Over‑winding the spool, which can cause the line to bind.
- Forgetting to clean the head, leading to debris‑induced feed problems.
- Installing the line in the wrong direction; the arrows are there for a reason.
- Leaving too much excess line, which can whip and damage the guard.
Comparison Table: Bump Feed vs. Fixed Line vs. Auto-Feed
| Feature | Bump Feed | Fixed Line | Auto Feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line Advancement | Tap head on ground | Manual pull through eyelets | Automatic as line wears |
| Ease of Reload | Moderate — spool removal required | Simple — thread line directly | Moderate — spool removal required |
| Typical Line Capacity | 10‑15 ft per spool | Single length, user‑cut | 10‑15 ft per spool |
| Best For | General residential use | Precision edging, light trimming | Heavy, continuous cutting |
| Maintenance Frequency | Occasional cleaning | Low — fewer moving parts | Regular cleaning of feed mechanism |
Maintenance Tips for Longer String Life
Extending the life of your cutting line reduces the frequency of replacements and keeps your trimmer performing at its best. Here are several practical habits:
- Store the trimmer indoors or in a dry shed. Moisture can make line brittle.
- Trim at the correct angle — keep the head parallel to the ground to avoid excessive line wear.
- Avoid hard surfaces like concrete, rocks, and metal edging; they shred line quickly.
- Use the right line for the job — thicker line (.095″) lasts longer on tough weeds, while thinner line (.080″) is fine for grass.
- Inspect the spool regularly for cracks or warping; a damaged spool feeds poorly.
- Lubricate the bump knob (if applicable) with a light silicone spray to keep the feed smooth.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Even with careful installation, you may encounter a few hiccups. Here’s how to diagnose and fix the most frequent problems.
Line Won’t Feed
If the line refuses to advance, first check that the spool is seated correctly and the cap is fully locked. Next, verify the winding direction matches the arrows. Debris lodged in the feed eyelets can also block line; clean them with a thin wire or compressed air.
Line Breaks Frequently
Frequent breakage usually signals the wrong line diameter, excessive contact with hard objects, or a worn spool eyelet. Upgrade to a heavier gauge line if you’re cutting thick brush, and replace the spool if the eyelets show grooves.
Uneven Cutting Width
An uneven cut often means one side of a dual‑line head is longer than the other. Re‑measure and reload both lines to equal length. Also ensure the head isn’t bent from impact.
Excessive Vibration
Vibration can stem from an unbalanced spool or a loose retaining cap. Tighten the cap, and if vibration persists, replace the spool — it may have warped from heat.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace the string on my Ryobi weed eater?
Frequency depends on usage. For average residential trimming, expect to reload every 2‑4 hours of run time. Heavy brush clearing may require a fresh spool every hour.
Can I use any brand of trimmer line?
While many third‑party lines fit, using Ryobi‑specified line guarantees the correct diameter and material composition, which protects the feed mechanism and maintains warranty coverage.
What does “How to Replace String on Ryobi Weed Eater?” mean for a beginner?
It simply refers to the process of removing the old cutting line, cleaning the head, and loading new line according to the manufacturer’s instructions — exactly what this guide covers step by step.
Why does my bump‑feed head not release line when I tap it?
Common causes: the spool is over‑wound, the line is wound in the wrong direction, or the bump knob is clogged with debris. Disassemble, clean, and reload following the directional arrows.
Is it necessary to wear gloves while replacing the string?
Gloves protect your hands from sharp line ends and keep the spool clean. They’re highly recommended, especially when handling bulk line.
Can I convert a fixed‑line head to a bump‑feed head?
Some Ryobi models accept interchangeable heads. Check your model’s parts diagram or contact Ryobi support before purchasing a conversion kit.
