What is Lawn Lime and Why Do I Need It?
Lawn care is an essential aspect of maintaining a beautiful and healthy outdoor space, and one crucial step in achieving this goal is understanding the role of lawn lime. In our previous discussion, we touched on the importance of soil pH in lawn health, and how certain conditions can affect its growth. To address these issues, lawn lime comes into play – a versatile and essential tool for any homeowner looking to give their lawn the best possible chance to thrive.
The Basics of Lawn Lime
Lawn lime, also known as dolomitic limestone, is a type of mineral-based product designed to adjust and balance the pH levels in your lawn’s soil. This is crucial because most plants, including grass, grow best in slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions. However, many lawns are plagued by acidic soil, which can lead to weak growth, poor color, and a general decline in overall health.
- When soil pH drops below 6.0, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies, particularly in essential micronutrients like iron and manganese.
- Lime helps to neutralize these acidic conditions by adding calcium and magnesium, which in turn promote healthy microbial activity and nutrient uptake.
The Importance of pH Balance
Soil pH is a critical factor in lawn health, and lime plays a vital role in achieving the perfect balance. By adjusting the pH levels, lime ensures that essential nutrients are available to the grass, promoting healthy growth, strong root development, and a lush, vibrant appearance. Furthermore, a balanced pH also reduces the risk of common lawn diseases and pests, which thrive in acidic conditions.
Now that we’ve explored the basics of lawn lime and its importance in achieving a healthy pH balance, it’s time to delve into the next crucial aspect of using lime effectively: choosing the right type of lime for your lawn. In the next section, we’ll discuss the key considerations when selecting the perfect lime for your specific lawn care needs.

Now that you’ve understood the importance of lime in maintaining a healthy lawn, it’s time to explore the various types of lime available in the market. With so many options, choosing the right one can be overwhelming, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Lime Type: Dolomitic vs. Calcitic
The two most common types of lime used for lawns are dolomitic and calcitic. Dolomitic lime, also known as dolomitic agricultural lime, contains magnesium and calcium carbonate. It’s an excellent choice for lawns with acidic soil and those that require both magnesium and calcium. On the other hand, calcitic lime contains only calcium carbonate and is suitable for lawns with slightly acidic to neutral soil pH.
- For lawns with acidic soil, dolomitic lime can help raise the pH and provide essential magnesium for healthy plant growth.
- However, if your lawn has a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, calcitic lime may be a more cost-effective option.
Other Types of Lime: Pelletized and Chelated
In addition to dolomitic and calcitic lime, there are other types of lime available, including pelletized and chelated lime. Pelletized lime is a more convenient option, as it’s easier to spread and can be applied directly to the lawn. Chelated lime, on the other hand, is a type of lime that’s coated with a chelating agent, which helps to break down the lime and make it more easily absorbed by plants.
When choosing the right type of lime for your lawn, consider factors such as soil pH, type of grass, and the level of acidity in your soil. By taking these factors into account, you can select the most suitable type of lime for your lawn and achieve the desired results.
