We’ll cover the tools and materials you’ll need, how to remove stubborn stains and mildew, and some creative ideas for giving your chairs a fresh new look.
Assessing the Condition and Choosing the Right Chair
When it comes to refurbishing a plastic lawn chair, the first step is to assess its condition and choose the right chair for the project. This is a crucial step, as it will determine the level of effort and resources required to restore the chair to its former glory.
Inspecting for Damage
Start by examining the chair for any visible damage, such as cracks, breaks, or worn-out parts. Check the frame, legs, and arms for any signs of deterioration, and make a note of any areas that need repair or replacement.
- Look for any signs of rust or corrosion, especially if the chair has been exposed to harsh weather conditions.
- Check the joints and connections for any loose or broken parts, and make a note of any areas that need to be reinforced.
Evaluating the Condition of the Seat and Cushions
Next, evaluate the condition of the seat and cushions. Check for any signs of wear, such as fading, discoloration, or tears. Make a note of any areas that need reupholstering or replacement.
Consider the chair’s original design and functionality when assessing its condition. If the chair has a complex design or features that are difficult to repair, it may be more challenging to restore it to its former glory.
Choosing the Right Chair
When choosing a chair for refurbishment, consider the following factors: the chair’s age, condition, and original design. If you’re looking for a quick and easy project, consider a chair with a simple design and minimal damage. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more challenging project, consider a chair with a complex design or extensive damage.
Ultimately, the right chair for refurbishment is one that you’re passionate about restoring and can commit to the necessary time and effort required to bring it back to life.
With your chair selected and its condition assessed, you’re ready to move on to the next step: preparing for refurbishment. This involves cleaning and disassembling the chair, which will be covered in the next section.
Preparing for Refurbishment: Cleaning and Disassembly
After selecting the perfect plastic lawn chair for refurbishment, it’s time to get started on the cleaning and disassembly process. This crucial step will help you assess the chair’s condition and make informed decisions about the materials you’ll need to replace or repair.
Removing Dirt, Debris, and Old Adhesives
Begin by thoroughly cleaning the chair using a mixture of mild soap and warm water. This will help loosen any dirt, grime, or old adhesives that may be holding the chair’s components together. For tougher stains, you can use a soft-bristled brush or a scrubber to gently scrub the area. Be sure to rinse the chair thoroughly to prevent any soap residue from affecting the subsequent disassembly process.
- Pay particular attention to areas where the seat and backrest meet, as these are often prone to dirt buildup and old adhesive residue.
- Use a soft cloth or paper towel to dry the chair and prevent water spots from forming.
Disassembling the Chair
Once the chair is clean, it’s time to disassemble it. Start by removing any loose screws, clips, or other fasteners that hold the chair’s components together. Be careful not to strip any screws or damage the surrounding plastic. If you encounter any stubborn parts, consider using a plastic-friendly adhesive remover to help loosen the bond.
With the chair disassembled, you’ll be able to assess the condition of each component and make a plan for refurbishment. This is a great opportunity to inspect the chair’s frame, seat, and backrest for any signs of damage or wear. By taking the time to properly clean and disassemble the chair, you’ll be able to create a solid foundation for the refurbishment process and ensure a successful outcome.
Now that you’ve completed the cleaning and disassembly process, you’re ready to move on to the refurbishment phase, where you’ll repair and replace damaged components, and begin to rebuild your chair into a beautiful and functional piece of outdoor furniture.
Refurbishing the Frame and Seat
Now that your plastic lawn chair is clean and disassembled, it’s time to give its frame and seat a new lease on life. A well-refurbished frame can make all the difference in the durability and aesthetic appeal of your chair, while a fresh new seat can revitalize its overall look.
Repairing and Strengthening the Frame
The frame of your plastic lawn chair may have suffered damage over time, such as cracks, dents, or broken joints. To repair and strengthen it, you’ll need to use a combination of techniques and materials. Start by cleaning the frame thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris that may be hindering your repair efforts.
- Use a wire brush to scrub away any stubborn dirt or grime, and then wipe the frame clean with a damp cloth.
- For more severe damage, you may need to use a plastic repair kit or a two-part epoxy to fill in cracks and holes.
Reinforcing and Painting the Frame
Once you’ve repaired any damage to the frame, it’s time to give it a fresh new coat of paint. Use a high-quality exterior paint specifically designed for plastic surfaces, and make sure to apply it in a well-ventilated area to avoid any fumes or mess. You can also add a clear coat of varnish to protect the paint and give the frame an extra layer of durability.
With a sturdy and attractive frame, you’re one step closer to having a beautiful and functional plastic lawn chair. Next, you’ll need to focus on reupholstering and replacing the cushions to give your chair a fresh new look and feel.
Reupholstering and Replacing Cushions
Now that your plastic lawn chair has been refurbished, it’s time to give it a fresh new look and feel. With the frame and seat in great condition, the next step is to reupholster the chair with new fabric and replace the cushions. This is where you can really get creative and make your chair truly unique.
Choosing the Right Fabric
When it comes to reupholstering your chair, the type of fabric you choose is crucial. You’ll want to select a material that’s durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean. Consider using outdoor fabrics like Sunbrella or Olefin, which are designed specifically for outdoor use and can withstand the elements. You can also think about using recycled or eco-friendly materials to give your chair a sustainable twist.
- Consider the color palette and style of your chair when selecting fabric. You can choose a bold, bright color to make a statement or opt for a more neutral tone to blend in with your outdoor decor.
- Don’t forget to measure your chair carefully before buying fabric to ensure you have enough to cover the entire surface.
Replacing the Cushions
Replacing the cushions is a great opportunity to add some extra comfort and support to your chair. You can use foam inserts or replace the cushions with new ones made from a durable, water-resistant material. Consider adding some extra padding or support to the seat and backrest for maximum comfort.
With your fabric and cushions in place, your chair is starting to take shape. In the next section, we’ll cover the finishing touches, including painting and additional decor to make your chair truly one-of-a-kind.
Finishing Touches: Painting and Additional Decor
Now that you’ve successfully refurbished the frame and reupholstered the chair, it’s time to add the final touches that will make your plastic lawn chair truly unique and eye-catching. With a fresh coat of paint and some creative embellishments, you can transform your chair from a dated outdoor accessory to a stylish statement piece.
Painting for a Fresh Look
Painting your chair can be a fun and rewarding process, but it requires some planning and preparation. Start by choosing a paint that’s specifically designed for plastics, as regular paint may not adhere properly. You can also use a primer to ensure a smooth finish and to help the paint adhere better. Consider using a bright, bold color to give your chair a pop of personality, or opt for a more subtle hue to blend in with your outdoor decor.
- For a distressed look, use a sanding block to gently roughen the surface of the chair before painting.
- To add some extra texture and interest, try using a textured paint or a paint with a built-in glaze.
Adding Decorative Touches
Once you’ve painted your chair, it’s time to think about adding some decorative touches that will make it truly unique. Consider adding some colorful pillows or a matching tablecloth to create a cohesive look. You can also add some decorative trim or tassels to give your chair a more polished finish. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and add some creative embellishments, like a fun quote or a colorful pattern, to make your chair truly stand out.
With your chair looking its best, it’s time to think about how to maintain it and extend its lifespan. By following some simple tips and tricks, you can keep your chair looking great for years to come.
Maintaining and Extaining the Lifespan of Your Refurbished Chair
With your refurbished plastic lawn chair looking like new, the next step is to ensure it stays that way for years to come. Regular maintenance and care will not only extend its lifespan but also keep it looking its best.
Protecting the Frame and Seat
One of the most critical aspects of maintaining your refurbished chair is protecting the frame and seat from the elements. Use a waterproof sealant on the frame to prevent water damage and rust. For the seat, apply a UV-resistant fabric protector to prevent fading and discoloration.
- Regularly inspect the frame and seat for signs of wear and tear, and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
- Consider applying a coat of clear varnish to the frame to add an extra layer of protection and give it a glossy finish.
Care and Cleaning Tips
Cleaning your refurbished chair is a breeze, but it’s essential to do it correctly to prevent damage to the fabric and frame. For regular cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt and debris, and a mild soap solution to wipe down the seat and frame. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the fabric or strip away the protective coatings.
- For tougher stains, mix a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar, and apply it to the stain using a soft-bristled brush.
- Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with clean water and drying with a soft cloth.
By following these simple maintenance and care tips, you’ll be able to enjoy your refurbished plastic lawn chair for years to come, and ensure it remains a beautiful and functional addition to your outdoor space. As you continue to enjoy your refurbished chair, you may find that it’s time to add some new accessories or decorative touches to keep it looking its best, which brings us to the next step in the process: Adding the Final Touches.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is refinishing a plastic lawn chair?
Refinishing a plastic lawn chair involves restoring its original appearance and functionality by removing old paint, repairing any damage, and applying a new coat of paint or finish. This process can breathe new life into an old chair, making it look and feel like new again.
How do I prepare my plastic lawn chair for refinishing?
To prepare your chair, start by cleaning it thoroughly with soap and water to remove dirt and debris. Next, use a wire brush to scrub away any stubborn stains or rust spots. Finally, sand the entire chair to smooth out the surface and create a better bond for the new finish.
Why is refinishing a plastic lawn chair better than buying a new one?
Refinishing a plastic lawn chair is a more eco-friendly and cost-effective option than buying a new one. Not only will you reduce waste by reusing an existing chair, but you’ll also save money on the purchase price and avoid the hassle of assembling a new chair.
When is the best time to refurbish a plastic lawn chair?
The best time to refurbish a plastic lawn chair depends on your personal preference and the chair’s condition. If the chair is still in good condition but looks worn, consider refinishing it in the off-season (winter or early spring) to avoid disturbing outdoor activities. If the chair is damaged or heavily worn, refurbish it as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration.
How does refinishing a plastic lawn chair compare to painting it?

No, not all paints or finishes are suitable for plastic lawn chairs. Look for outdoor-specific paints or finishes that are designed to withstand exposure to the elements. Some popular options include acrylic enamel, polyurethane, and marine-grade varnish. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test a small area first to ensure the finish adheres properly.
